Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XXI (Will these playoffs ever F'ing end?)

The same thing where I don't think most people who are pro Byram have really watched him applies to Power.

His game isn't nearly as sleepy/disengaged but he's the definition of a project. You're going to have to be willing to live through the warts in hopes that he figures it out and he's going to need the right tutor to put the pieces together.

Im willing to take a chance on either guy. All depends on price. Lafreniere for Power does make sense to me in a lot of ways. Buffalo gets a cost controlled guy and can save face by trading a 1OA for a 1OA. We know thats a factor for them.

Things need to change. There's limited flexibility to move Panarin this year or Mika at all. They need to pay Cuylle and K'Andre. For that reason alone, I dont see how Kreider is back. His trade protection can't save him because Drury can threaten him with waivers like Goodrow and Trouba. Its a business decision. Kreider can go be Corey Perry for some other team, but the Rangers cant pay an old broken down guy 6.5 mil to do nothing at even strength. Even his defenders have to acknowledge that reality.

The team needs are clearly a left D who can move the puck under duress and a young center with offensive talent. Wingers are so easily replaceable and the Rangers have a ton, especially now that Mika is one. The Rangers have plenty of young talent to create an effective bottom 6. KAM or Schneider could go because they have value to other teams. Lafreniere has shown flashes and has cost certainty. Im listening on all these guys. Othmann and even Perreault are not untouchable. Its funny how people get attached to these guys just because they are young. Leon Rose wasnt afraid to package fan favorites and homegrown guys for established players in areas of need and the Knicks jumped up to a new level. Drury could learn from that. This isnt a rebuild anymore. We have to think about team needs instead of making space for young players. I cant wait for people to misconstrue what I say as me wanting to sell the farm.
I think the special sauce with Leon Rose was identifying OG as the right guy to get. KAT was a good get as well.

Not being bashful about moving likeable players comes after identifying your target.

There are guys/kids I would NEVER move that should 100% be put on the table for the right guy.

Management needs to identify those players if they havent already. I think you're going to see player movement around the league this year. Guys you wouldnt necessarily expect. Just using guys like Rossi or Peterka as examples because they've been mentioned publicly, but under normal circumstances theyd theoretically be untouchable. Young and homegrown guys on their teams with 60 point season under their belt. There are surely others out there. The cap is going to cause teams to make hard decisions because, while yes its rising, that means current UFAs and RFAs will ask for more and that leads to trades. The only guys untouchable in my book are Fox and Shesterkin (and probably Cuylle just because of the type of player he is and we need more of it).

Not true. He was benched in his last game (and it probably wasn't the first time). Following that, he asked to be let out of his contract "for family reasons" and the club announced the contract was mutually terminated. Loopy Lou signed him after he returned to the US.
If you believe that he didnt already have a deal in place with the isles longggg before that then sir, I have a bridge to sell you. You probably also believe that impending UFA’s arent already starting to speak with teams

That's fair. In the end I think you would want Miller AND Power. Not Miller or Power.

I agree. I think the big question is how do the Rangers add a top pairing LD and either a very good 3C or a top 6 scoring winger?

Taking Kreider out of the equation because he wouldn't return either of those, how do you do that when you main trade chips (Laff, K. Miller, Panarin) create a hole in those same positions.

Even if the Rangers sign Gavrikov to solve the LD issue, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The word “because” is doing an Atlas amount of lifting.

SKA bought him out, and you’re post hoc saying “you can’t fire him, he quit.” It’s hilarious.

Lou signed him BECAUSE he was a recently bought out free asset.
If you believe he didnt already have a deal in place with the isles longgggg before that, again, I have a bridge to sell you

I feel like we can't make any big moves unless Panarin's contract is gone. Drury needs to decide what we are doing this year. Are we competing or taking a step back to retool? If we are retooling, trade Panarin. Why keep him if we aren't competing? Unless they want to see where they are at the deadline and possibly trade even more assets? At some point we need to pick a direction and stick with it.

I think they are going to have to live with Parsnips at 3C, at least to start the year. LD you'd likely have to move Laf + Kreider or something.

Thats also up to Panarin. I forget where but at some point he did an interview that alluded to it being NY or Russia for his future.

Hes got an NMC. I dont like the veterans but if Drury tries to play hardball again with guys who cant be moved its gonna be a repeat of last year. Panarin has a year left and will be gone. It's going to be hard to have a top PP if he's gone. Might as well suck it up for a year and if the season goes haywire, move him at the deadline. save the 11.6 mill in cap space to play in next seasons UFA market

So let him decide that sooner than later. I'm tired of being stuck with these big time contracts and not being able to get rid of them. It's time to retool and get rid of older players, Panarin included. I don't care how many goals or points he scores, Drury needs to have the balls to make tough moves

I'm just sick of seeing them. I don't want to suck it up for a year because we all know the result with this shit core.

So you be okay if his decision was going back to Russia instead of agreeing to a trade?

Trading Miller and Laf would be Rangers 101. Never be patient. Never reward your drafted and developed players. Get someone else's. Sign someone else's. Trade all your guys or just never give em a shot.
So out of curiosity what do you consider patient? Do you realize that both have played 5 seasons already.
