Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XXI (Will these playoffs ever F'ing end?)

Signing him to a PTO would make the most sense.
Signing Toews ultimately means you are jettisoning off one of our current players that are not named Zibanejad, Kreider, or Panarin.
we ended 2025 with this lineup:

Panarin-Trochek-Perrault
Othmann-Miller-Lafreniere
Kreider-Zibanejad-Cuylle
Brodzinski-Carrick-Rempe
...
Edstrom-Parssinen-Berard
Kaliyev

There was a lot of clamoring to get Berard into the lineup more for his play. We can send Perrault to HFD for seasoning. No one will cry over losing Kaliyev. Drury seemed high on Parssinen and he had a decent showing at the WCs. But generally, we have too many players. Probably not a lot of teams who are in a position to do 2 for 1 or even 3 for 1 trades.

Who else did he throw out?

Honestly speaking you could probably list the entire team and it would be true.
Power, Samuelsson (don’t start you), and Tuch were the specific ones, but a few others wouldn’t shock me. That organization can’t get out of their own way.
And yet everyone wonders why Buffalo would ever consider a trade around RFA Peterka for 7 years signed Lafreniere
Those were my exact comments the other day too. I’m also not sure if it’s just an unfamiliarity thing with Peterka, but he’s been a better 5v5 scorer than Laf too. I won’t compare the PP scoring because he gets way more of a look there than Laf. Better skater, more of a puck hound, and has managed to produce in the barren wastleand that’s Buffalo.

I love Laf. I don’t want to trade him. It just wouldn’t surprise me if it happened, and it makes sense for both teams.

If we actually have any interest in Toews, offer him a position as assistant coach. He can control practise and provide leadership and accountability from behind the bench.

Gives him a leg up on his next career move, gives us an extra roster spot, and the ability to give him $$ outside of the cap

I can see Buffalo moving Tuch no matter what with him just having 1 year left and will be turning 30 at the end of next season. Power is SOL if he isn't happy. He has another 4 years left.

I would most definitely prefer Power over Byram but if Buffalos #1 concern is cost certainty, I don't see Buffalo trading Power. That COULD potentially bring down the cost for Byram/Peterka if Buffalo is getting a locked up player back (eg Laff).

May he the trade isn't Laff + Schneider (just 1 year left) for Byram and Peterka. May be its Laff + Othmann + #12 and a player like Berard.

If Zibanejad is somehow moved , you could get a defenseman or a winger in return, you could sign Toews it would lock up our 3c spot and slot players in better. That would make sense but I dont see Mika moving.

Sam Bennett is gonna be the worst contract ever signed in 2 years. I think he's in the perfect scenario for himself, he wasn't near this good in Calgary, who's to say it will work when he gets somewhere else?
Yup, we missed the Bennett bus. Easier said than done, but we need to find the next Bennett, not overpay for the original

Does Kandre for Rossi, Lafreniere for Power move anybody? Could see the Rangers liking a Tuch/Byram for Lafreniere+. Have to think Buffalo would like that 7 year deal he’s on

Minnesota has no need for a LD. Not sure Buffalo makes that deal but I wouldn’t have an issue taking a chance on Power. We have plenty of wingers.

Couple of nuggets from Vince's article on Sullivan:

1-2-2 forecheck
Zone D

Playing a 1-2-2 forecheck who ever that first player in really needs to bust their ass to force a pass up the boards (thats where the first 2 come in, almost as a winger lock) in order to be effective. It does help reduce odd man rushes

No offense but the Toews stuff is silly. We already have 3 centers in their 30s. We have a desparate need for speed not a 37 year old center. Toews was already declining and opening night will be almost 3 years since he last played. I'm rooting for him but we are the opposite of a good spot for him.
