Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Of the teams in the East Florida has been the one best built for playoff hockey and it's not been close. At least from the start of the series with Carolina it wouldn't surprise me at all if they swept the Canes. Carolina's been able to keep the shots against down....something we didn't do but we hung in for 6 mainly because of Igor. Andersen and Kochetkov are good goalies but they're not great.....I'm not sure Bobrovsky is either but he doesn't have to be because his team does such a good job of controlling the play in their own defensive zone. I think we're seeing that Carolina's group isn't good enough either.

All that said hopefully the western team knocks the Panthers out. I just don't see Carolina coming back in this series.

do you pencil in perreault for a top 9 wing slot next year opening night? or start him in hartford to let him build some game and confidence at the pro level?

if both he and bread are in the top 9, it essentially means both troch and zib are playing C. with kreider and othmann there are too many wingers.

laf miller cuylle
bread zib othmann
kreider troch perreault
edstrom parss berard

and rotate rempe in? no carrick?

Not sure, could go either way, if he does start in HFD i dont expect him to be there more than a couple months.

Hartford. I don't want to see Perreault play in the bottom 6 here, he needs to be in the top 6 with our best players and PP time. Otherwise leave him on the farm.

it's not just him. othmann too. berard and rempe. there are so many f***ing bottom 6 wingers - each one glittering with *~* promise of top 6 ability *~* to like a different group of posters here.

which of these guys can be shuttled to/from hfd without needing waivers? i don't think it's a bad thing necessarily to have a bunch of young nhl level talent beasting and gelling in the AHL but if it means that kreider gets to fart around up here without consequence then that's just the same mess we've been dealing with.

Obviously (to me) first priority is LD. shift everyone down and slot them correctly. In theory we can use some of our winger strength to make that trade. i dunno who or who for though

Othmann is the guy i'm moving for a LD. Berard showed a lot more than he did

I get the impression that Panarin thinks his vision and passing are his best attributes when it's his shot that is actually the key to his game.

He had a career year in 23-24 in goals and points, he also had a career high in Shots with 303.

He is so accurate with his shot that when he focuses in on getting it off, lanes open up as guys look to cheat and try to block it.

He needs to get back to being the trigger man.

Mollie:
“Shy under 8M in cap space, with a shadow roster of 19 players.
12 forwards
5 defensemen
2 goalies
Does not include RFAs:
K’Andrea Miller
Zac Jones
Matthew Robertson
Will Cuylle
Matt Rempe
Adam Edstrom
Arthur Kallyve”

Ultimately i see the biggest F need at 2C. consider, Id like to see a bottom 6 of:

Cuylle Parssinen Trocheck
Edstrom Carrick Berard

that's a meat grinder and I think there's enough untapped offense to score goals in an actual structured offense. Size, grit, a little skating, good PK options.

which imo leaves you with
Panarin Miller Lafreniere
Zibanejad ______ Perreault

now Zib obviously plays C but i'm dubious his game is at that level where he wants to dig and claw and skate. Id probably be okay starting him at 2C with a FA winger to replace Kreider

Don't think I agree with Brooks on the long term second deal right now. Younger players are making bigger impacts and the cap is progressing as such that going long term saves money down the road. I want them to go long on Cuylle and Miller. And honestly rempe too. I think those 3 guys will improve even more so going forward and I think Laf bounces back. He was very unhappy with himself and I think that's the first step to him going from young passenger to now I need to be the guy. It's gonna be a new season and I'm optimistic now that the pain has subsided. Haha

I don't think it's a coincidence that the most successful recent examples of "winning with size and strength" were built around Kopitar and Barkov at 1C.

2 of the most complete dominant Cs of this generation. I don't think it's because they have a bunch of Soucys on the backend.
Size and strength is often mistaken for height and weight. It's not. Fans and media sleep on how important it is to have legs. Legs that go. Legs that keep you grounded for puck protection. Legs and wide stand that help you create puck separation because you're less likely to just bump off the player. If we go down our lineup, I think mot of the players have bigger arms than legs. They look like wet noodles on their skates.

Preseason and camp will determine that. It's too early to tell. He's going to come in and actually practice whatever structure environment we're going with, rather than getting thrown in cold looking lost and floating. Carrick is much more suitable for the 4th line than Parsley. To swap them out, Parsnip-pity will need to really show something.

Anyone who doesn’t think that size and strength are important should check out the Carolina/ the Florida series. The Panthers are taking apart the Moneyball Hurricanes. That the team you will have to beat in the east the next few years.

The average size of a player on Florida (10+ playoff games played) is 6'1.75" 199 lb. The average size of a player on Carolina is 6'0.875" 200 lb. The teams are the same size.

Parsinnen is intriguing if you look at his underlying numbers. He's a guy who has played very few minutes but has produced pretty well. He doesn't shy away from contact either. I feel like the Rangers could use another center that is more established but if you look at his scoring rate metrics @ 5v5 he's at 1.8 p/60 (he was actually at 2.8 p/60 with the Rangers in 11 games). Lundell during the regular season was at 2.1 p/60. They are practically the same age.

Sometimes the answer is to use the guys you have and surround them properly with guys who can augment their game. The team has Laba and Roobreck in the AHL for next year. Both are bigger guys who skate well (Laba is a more powerful skater but a bit smaller than Roobreck). Why not give Parsinnen the season to see what he can do? Play him 14-15 minutes a game. Use the money saved to improve the defense.

Miller
Trochek
Parsinnen
Carrick

Zibanejad is likely to still be around to rotate in as needed

Pts/60 is his underlying numbers? His underlying numbers show that he is one of the lowest volume shooters in the entire league who allows tons of shots against when he's on the ice. He put up those numbers as a Ranger before he shot 2 for 4 and all all of his points occurred in two games.

It's not a conspiracy theory

I would imagine that it is not all uncommon for the best player on the team to give his input to the coach on who he would like to play with. I highly doubt he "demanded" it and the source is Carp who is a troll and seeks out drama. And the coach can either say yes or say no. If a player demands a linemate, the coach disagrees, and the coach does it anyway the problem is the coach not the player. He's supposed to make the final decision.

I disagree with JT Miller getting the “C” on day 1.
I would go the whole season without a captain.
What if the team does sign McDavid in 26/27? Are they then going to remove the “C” from the current captain?

Marty Straka. Marty St. Louis. Tree trunks. Never saw them get knocked down.

What is it with Marty's?

Sounds like the Islanders won't make any hires other than Darche for now.

The Rangers should hire Shanny. He loves NY and played on the Rangers during Drury's first season with the team. Maybe we can get Shanny to replace Ryan Martin if he leaves for the LA Kings.

Disappointing that Mollie didn’t throw out whether do keep or trade the pick?
Also, Peca going to Chicago is a huge red flag for offer sheets incoming from the Blackhawks who have a ton of cap space.
