Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

The injuries killed us. That team didn't have the talent but it certainly had the onions to win a Cup.
I think that series really changed when the goalie interference penalty was missed when the kinds fell on top of henke. Just seemed like energy turned as the team felt at that point that everything was against them.

I guess Drury's trying to build a defense by committee. If you can't get a clear cut #2 to pair with Fox, try to get a bunch of mid-pair types and hope one catches fire with him like a Hronek or Lindgren. I just don't think he's hit on that yet and is hoping Miller gets it together to reach his ceiling.

It's a gamble, and if it fails, we're in the same hole.

People will argue here if Fox is a #1 or a really good #2. If he can carry a top pair and play the 1st Power Play, he's a #1 who had an off year by his standards. That's all I see there.

He's not Makar. He's always relied more on his smarts, and he's had a carousel of partners this year. That doesn't make it any easier.

I still am going to beat the Byram drum.

23 years old, 4OA, already won a Cup and played great in the post season, has been healthy the past two seasons, no concussions in 4 years. This is when non-Makar level generational D breakout. Fox was like 23 his first year here. Byram may be a #3 right now (he played 82 games averaging over 22 minutes last year, but on a poor team) but he very clearly has top pair potential. I’m just not seeing a world where you are going to convince me that giving Gavrikov 7x8M when he’ll be 30 at the start of the year is a better decision than going after Byram and giving him 7x7 when he’ll be 24 at the start of the year.

Yes, I understand we also would have to pay to acquire him. Everyone knows Buffalo is shopping him, he’s an RFA, doesn’t really want to sign with them long term and they have Power and Dahlin, two #1 OAs. Adams isn’t a great GM either and he doesn’t have lots of leverage. I would rather move the 1st this year for a 24 year old Byram than draft a mid first player in a weak draft who will be helping us when Miller and Zib are 35, Fox is 30 and Shesterkin is 32. Who says the price is Schneider. Maybe Buffalo takes the pick, packages with their 9OA and moves into the top 5 to get a player they like. Maybe Laf + gets a package where we can get Byram and McLeod or Peterka. I’m not going to pretend I know what the deal could look like, but it is definitely a player I would be calling about if I was Drury.

When an assistant coach who you say you very much want to keep leaves you for a lateral move, to a worse team, with less stability in the GM/HC ranks…it’s a rough look.
Conversely, it's seen as a move that gets you to a HC spot earlier due to that lack of stability compared to what's just happened at your current job...

But either way, Peca seemed like he was doing some good things so it's a shame to lose him

disagree, but still earns a like...

so I think this hinges on the following premise...
Ks have greater concern about Doughty immediately falling off a cliff than Kopitar.
While mins/production will further reduce going forward, they can get 2 more quality seasons out of Kopi.
They urgently need Schneider
They have good pivot depth.
Zib at half = scoring RW, but is further contingency depth.
Emery is a quality D prospect
Sykora could compete bottom 6 incl pivot soon, and 2C potential in 2-3 yrs is not beyond what is conceivable

This also gives them room to keep Gav b'c you are moving Byfield's 6+. They NEED to do that.

So yeah, it is very tough to swallow, but if there is enuf on the table, and there is enuf youth coming back, they have to seriously consider profit in this deal and trade Byfield

The pieces coming from NY work for La
They might need a RD but they don't need Schneider specifically. There are other options besides Schneider so if the price is Byfield to acquire a RD, they will 1000% balk.
They will keep Byfield over Gavrikov.
They can find a LD replacement over shipping Byfield to resolve.
They will have to exhaust like 50 different options before they consider it.

Indeed. Chicago hiring with urgency. Drury, taking a nap. Looking forward to his Saturday.

I disagree.

Davidson is on thin ice. He doesn’t get another hire. He’s out after this season if Chicago doesn’t make progress.

Whoever that new GM is will want to hire his own people.

lol what? Urgency? You think they went into this summer with Jeff Blashill as their target?

Chicago is a mess.
Both of those statements can be true. They weren't going to bring Q back for obvious reasons and Drury moved fast on Sullivan. Everyone saw that as inevitable. So for Chicago to get the jump, they are hiring who they think is the best fit as well as the rest of the coaching staff. I don't know what's going on with our situation unless they specific assistants of teams still in the playoffs that Sullivan is wanting to target.

They didn’t get the jump, they offered the moon for David Carle and he turned them down.

Cullen Potter is the guy we need to take in the draft

I agree -- Gavrikov would've been a good move 3-4 years ago. He was a guy I was hoping we could pull out of Columbus back then before he upped his game. I just don't think he solves our issues beyond a year or two, and that contract has the potential to age poorly. We're right back in the same spot. And you need veterans--I get that.

No problems with Byram--I think the overall question is just the cost. I haven't seen him play too much, so I can't fairly make an assessment beyond stat-watching (though his advanced stats looks very promising considering where Buffalo was).

I wonder if we see Shanahan join the Rangers in some fashion. He wanted to hire Drury I believe before he became GM here. Those guys know each other well. Drury doesn’t love speaking to the public, maybe a role for Shanahan there? Team President?

Ekholm is playing at a high level still at 35. I wouldn’t say it’s a guarantee that Gavrikov ages poorly
