Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

who is the biggest piece of shit middle 6 player available? Let me ask chatgpt
Chatgpt is a coward.

I get the passion — hockey fans definitely don't hold back! But to keep things respectful (and avoid flaming players who are giving it their all), I can absolutely help you analyze underperforming or overrated middle-six NHL forwards based on stats like:

  • Point production vs. salary
  • Advanced analytics (Corsi, expected goals, etc.)
  • Defensive liabilities
  • Playoff performance
  • Contract value

Let me know if you'd like me to pull up a current list of middle-six players who might be underperforming or considered disappointing, or if you're eyeing a specific team or trade situation.

Edit: Krieder did make Chatgpt's list of 8.

I think the number one item on the Rangers shopping list should be a top pair defenseman. A few years ago I beat the drums for Mattias Ekstrom. That’s the kind of player the Rangers need. I don’t follow the players around the league that closely anymore so I don’t have names like I have in the past but the Rangers do. They need someone who can play next to Fox.

I’m firmly in the camp that Miller is not that player. The good news is that he can bring a good return wherever he goes. Perhaps a third line center with some bite.

This team starts with the best goaltender in the league. It needs to be built from the back end out. I hopeful that Soucy will be better in a new system.

hahahahahaha

I want our second round pick back. Horrendous unecessary trade.

The analytics people were sounding the alarm on Edmonton when they were "soft" and "only cared about offense."

Same with Florida, actually. I started warning people about Florida in 2021.

The thing about the analytics is that they do a great job identifying teams that will adapt well to the playoffs. Everyone wants that but they get mad when a colorful chart says it.
Florida is an interesting case. They have a top tier offense. Just on talent alone.

They have a bunch of players that play hard and are fun to watch, but might be a mixed bag on raw stats and/or advanced metrics. Eye test darlings.

They have both stability and depth on D.

They paid up on a top tier Goalie, which isn't always advisable.

They kept a couple young guys but also traded a lot of youth and futures to keep a window open.

This is the third year in a row you could say all of those statements.

Carolina has some real talent and some real vibes. Vibes in goal, too. Great locker room and great coach.

Edmonton is a brute force of talent and system to minimize the impact of never finding "that guy" in goal.

Dallas has a "that guy" in goal, so with enough health and vibes they could hang with anyone.

They all deserve to be there. Dallas is my dark horse, but I guess I would put my $5 on Florida.

Without our own negative vibes this season, we are easily a top 8 team. Sorry to overuse the word "vibes," but if we made the same moves without all the drama, we would be in the same place right now by missing out on the final four.

The main difference would be not having a choice on the 2025 pick.

Carolina is the Moneyball NHL team. Great in the regular season but can’t get over the playoff hump.

If it came down to Lafréniere or Cuylle.

Would you trade Lafréniere to resign Cuylle to that same contact that Lafréniere just resigned for?

If the Rangers can't find takers for Mika and Kreider, I'd trade Lafréniere to resign Cuylle long term.

Carolina are the darlings of hockey analytics world. All of these people like Evolving Wild, JFresh, Dom, Shayna, etc all love Eric Tulsky. There was an article in The Athletic a few weeks ago on Tulsky hiring all of the people with advanced degrees in chemical engineering or whatever it was. Too bad these people have barely watched five hockey games from start to finish.

Evolving Wild is the guy who comes up with the models

Florida stomped on Carolina last night and there's no reason to think game one will be at the last time Florida stomps on Carolina in this series.

These models don't tell the entire story. Florida is the meat grinder. They dump the puck at every opportunity and forecheck. It's a simple game.

I know it's a longshot, but would anyone be upset if the Rangers signed Claude Giroux to a 2 year deal, like when the Rangers signed Straka and Shanahan type of deals? Giroux can be a sneaky signing.

I think the idea of going after a traditional top 6 C for the purposes of 3 line depth is good, but I'd much prefer it be someone in the vein of Chytil/Duchene who can still get up and down the ice, carrying the puck, with pace.

I don't know if spending money on Ekberg would have been a great move for us. At the time Edmonton got him we were weaker at RW (and thus traded for Kane/Tarasenko) and Lindgren/Miller were locked in at the top two LD spots.

People make fun of Carolina being an analytics team like they haven't won 13 playoff series since 2019.

And like Florida isn't in the top 3 in all the same models.

People make fun of Carolina because they get blown out every ECF no matter who they're playing.
They're at least one of the the six best teams in the NHL going back pretty much as far back as you can while maintaining a similar roster. They've done that despite not having a ton of high picks and being a destination that most players actively avoid. To describe them as a failure of analytics is a massive stretch.

You notice it's always the people who hate the Rangers the most and have never said anything positive that are making fun of analytics the most?

In a way, I get it. When the season ends and you run out of highlights of Adam Fox rolling his eyes at his teammates, you find colorful charts to point and laugh at.

At the same time, WHY WOULD YOU FIGHT THIS THING???!! It's something the Rangers are absolutely f***ing horrible at. Anybody who's going to be that grumpy all the f***ing time about the state of the team, should welcome any change to something the Rangers are bad at.
