Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Over the last couple of years, the Leafs really went in on the whole "let's just nail grit-coded players to our bottom six and defense" and we all got to see that it does absolutely nothing.
Cements my feeling that a Jekyll and Hyde composite of a lineup doesn't work. Your top 6 can't be Jekyll and the bottom 6 can't be Hyde. Successful teams have players that are innate blend of both.

You are spot on but it also indicates that the best option regarding Kreider may just be keeping him and hoping he rebounds.
I think this would largely be the best course of action considering the way last season went with the off-ice drama and injuries, his role on the team for the PK/PP, and the overall cap hit.

That being said, there was also way too much noise around him to make me think Drury isn’t going to move him. It opens up more time for Cuylle and Laf, assuming both are still here, and will add assets to a pool that’s been rapidly depleted. Kreider’s been one of my favorite Rangers ever, but it just seems like time to finally transition away from the last vestiges of the old core.

Center vs winger means something...
That difference comes into play when the players are of a similar caliber. Those two players were never of a similar caliber. They're still not. Wennberg is coming off of back to back 10 goal seasons. Kreider scored more those two combined years just this past year.

I always felt like the rangers missed a Barbashev/Lehkonen type. Fast fit that mold too. If they are forced to run it back with these Jabronis for one more year until Panarin’s contract is up, I’d be on the hunt for an undervalued player like that who can do the little things. It’s clear the vets are being asked to do too much

Kreider of today to be traded during the summer vs a deadline acquisition that was the second best center available at the deadline after the best center available was already traded. It's a supply and demand thing. Wingers are a dime a dozen. Teams want centers and center depth. Wingers are second thought unless the winter is elite. People can try to will this situation all they want but kreider isn't some massive league commodity, he just isn't that good anymore and his body is starting to break down.
