Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

I'm going to be that guy; this is it for Marchand. He's going all in on this run, and then is going to celebrate the Cup win hard.
Whoever signs him July 1 will get a player who is wildly inconsistent throughout the next season.
It could still be worth if from a 'lockeroom' point of view. But it's not something you'd want to spend too much of the cap on, and I cant imagine he'd want a smaller contract unless it's for a 'contender' in a location he likes

I certainly don't put him in the top 5. Top 5 centers get past the 2nd round of the playoffs.
Just some food for thought. Connor McDavid only made it past the 1st round once in his first 6 seasons (his 2nd NHL season in 2016-17), and then was unable to do it again for 5 more seasons until the 2021-22 season where Edmonton got swept by Colorado in the WCF en route to Colorado's Cup. The following year in 2022-23 Edmonton lost to Vegas in the west semis in 6 en route to Vegas' Cup. Of course he was also 1 win away from winning a Cup (where Connor put up 0 points in that game 7), but overall EDM have produced some lackluster results with arguably the 2 best players in the world and a pretty decent supporting cast.

Austin Matthews had 69 goals last year in the regular season. That's INSANE. The Rangers entire team had 278 and they won the Presidents trophy. He would have amounted to ~25% of the Rangers goals that year. He's inarguably a top-5 center in the world. McDavid. Eichel. Barkov. Mackinnon. Matthews.
Eichel top 5?

if i was rich id fly to japan just for superior sushi
You can get superior sushi in the USA but it will cost as much as your plane tickets to Japan 😅 No joke. Top sushi places in the USA overnight all their fish from Japan.

Late April (post cherry blossom viewing) and September October are the cheapest times to go. If you are going for sushi, go September October for the fattier wintry fish.

i cant say for myself, but i worked at a somewhat fancy sushi place in brooklyn and one of the food runners was a reformed Mormon who had at one point gone on a missionary trip to Japan for awhile. He told me that the cheapest sushi in japan blows even michelin starred places here out of the water

I'm assuming that it wouldn't fit cap wise, and at least one of CK or Panarin would need to go?
And probably both to recoup the defence, depth and picks that have gone?
i’d imagine that at least two of panarin/kreider/mika are moved in this scenario. its really what i expect anyway. i dont think w having a quiet offseason this year

altho id say that if miller went in that package thatd essentially be even salary since he’ll prob make 5.5-6M+ on his new deal

Matthews-Miller-Trochek is a very nice center group, and I think we'd be ok at wing with Mika, Cuylle and the youth. But we'd really need to nail trades/UFA for the D-corps to get anywhere

Pagnotta:
  • Speaking of coach contracts, a tale of two sides: Adam Foote’s deal with Vancouver is three-years at $1.5 million per season, while Mike Sullivan’s five-year deal with the N.Y. Rangers averages out to $6.5 million annually (it alters year by year).

Barkov is, without question, the best two way center in the game today with roughly the same amount of points as Matthews

Also, the Matthews thing goes beyond lumping his complete playoff stats together and making a comparison to a center that isn't a 3x Richard winner. Matthews has precisely 4 goals in his last 23 playoff games and managed a single goal against the Panthers in seven games. Barkov nullifies guys like him and ends up scoring more than the guy he's keying on. Matthews had 4 points against the Panthers. Barkov had 5 against the Leafs.

The Leafs have other weapons, too, so it's not like Matthews is a man on an island. Marner. Tavares. Nylander.

This is the same kind of shit that Panarin gets crucified for here on the norm.

Just for shits and giggles, Barkov had 4 points against the Rangers last year and Panarin had 4 points against the Panthers.

Matthews has been terrible, particularly for what is supposedly his uber-strength, in the playoffs for YEARS and especially when it REALLY matters.

Top 5-10 regular season center? Sure. I'd take 20-30, or probably more, players before him if I were making a playoff roster and wanted to win. He's proven nothing in the post season to be labeled a top 5 center in the league.

McDavid, as if he needs defending, has 134 points in 89 playoff games. Whatever is happening to the Oilers over the years isn't his fault. He's 3rd ALL TIME in NHL history in points per game behind Gretzky and Lemieux.

Last comment. Should go to food thread. It depends on what you are looking for. Clean fish flavors, it's good and cheap. I like big flavors which is really something they just don't do there. Stack some uni and caviar on TOP of that toro. Yes please. Also, michelin star is ass. Most of the places they rate are not that good, some terrible. I think both me and your mormon friend can both be correct in this instance.

as someone who’s worked/trailed in several michelin kitchens and non michelin kitchens i can definitely say the michelin i’ve experienced were far and away superior to any other restaurant I’ve ever eaten/worked at. run by psychopaths yeah, great great food though

I think I'm taking Draisaitl over at least Eichel and possibly Barkov and Matthews (and I really like Barkov).
