Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

I make a lot of wrong calls so take it for what it's worth. I don't think Mika or Kreids gets shipped out until around Xmas. Sullivan will be given a chance to turn those two around. They'll probably know in a month or two and then another month or two to work out a deal somewhere.
I dont think Sully is looking to turn anything around in regards to Mika. If anything, he would want him to continue playing like a PPG player.

Not continue playing. Return to playing like a PPG player. Yes he picked things up post JTM, but he was still far from his confident days of routinely making Ovechkin/Stamkos one timers or those slick slap fake passes to CK. He missed most of his one timers or completely would forego taking him.

So props for picking things up. I want to see Mika play with championship confidence and swagger, not wilting to adversity, and leading the team on the ice. THAT is what I want both Mika and Sully to cultivate together. If Sullivan simply accepts current Mika, I don't think he's doing his job as a coach getting the best out of his players. That's the Mika who doesn't show up in the playoffs.

Good points up until the part about him not showing up in the playoffs.

I posted this a couple of days ago.

From 19/20 to 23/24 if we look at the top 25 point producers in the playoffs, only 11 of them produced at PPG+. This is all skaters mind you.

Here is a list of those 11 players:

McDavid
Kucherov
Draisatl
MacKinnon
Rantanen
Makar
Point
Bouchard
Landeskog
Zibanejad

Now if we break it down even further to only centers during that same time period. Among the top 10 point producing centers only 5 produced at PPG+.

Here is a list of those 5 players:

McDavid
Draisatl
MacKinnon
Point
Zibanejad

Yeah, like you said before. I think CK was injured. We'll have to see how he bounces back (unless there is just a no-brainer deal to be made). I hope Mika was just going through some new parent pains and settles down + a season of good mental health for him. Last season was the most physical I think I've seen Panarin. The latter two have full NMC so it's more likely neither waive so we'll have to see what Sully can do. That's why -- as much as some people would like to -- I generally think we won't see any action until towards the Xmas break. There's insane and there's NMC. That's entirely on Drury for giving those out.
There are a few interesting options being thrown around (and some wild ones), but I mostly agree.

We have a flawed roster, but it is at minimum a functionally complete one. There's a real chance we go into camp with almost the same roster as today. Not saying that's what I *want.* I would however, prefer that to making a low-value move or two or three.

If Mika gets his head together and Chris gets his body together, we can hold off on the big moves for 6 months or so.

Some way to minus Soucy and add McDonagh would be my first wave of a wand.

Good points up until the part about him not showing up in the playoffs.
He racked a lot of points vs Washington (mostly assists) in an easy series. HUGE game 1 vs Carolina but the rest of the series, mostly just assists. Completely disappeared vs Florida. 2 assists in a game 4 loss. Gone in the other 5.

2022, mostly invisible vs the Penguins for the first 5 games before exploding in game 6+7. MIA in the first 2 games vs CAR (but so was the rest of the team) but shows up for the rest of the series. Makes an impact in the first 3 games vs TB but disappears in the last 3 games.

So what I mean is he doesn't show up when it matters. But I also acknowledge this is a team sport and he is but one of many players out there. He doesn't have to be on the score sheet. I just remember yelling at him to do something in those games.

Jesse Granger who covers the Knights for The Athletic mentioned Vegas is looking to add a forward. It will be interesting to see what Vegas will do. Most of their main guys didn't show up against Edmonton. Tomas Hertl. Shea Theodore. Mark Stone was injured. The team is getting older. Alex Piertangelo is 36. All of their picks have been traded for Hertl and Noah Hanifin who was also bad. Could Vegas be a spot for Chris Kreider? He isn't that far removed from scoring nearly 40 goals two seasons ago. Kreider may not have that skating burst from his BC days but he should still be able to contribute 30 goals next season. He had 22 goals this season. He can play in all of the special teams. Net front presence on the PP. PK. We haven't heard anything about Kreider having hand surgery. He mentioned having the hand injury on breakup day suffered in the Buffalo game after the 4 Nations.

Larry Brooks reported even Kreider acknowledges his time in New York is up and a fresh start somewhere else might be the best thing for him. Kreider has the 15 team no trade list. Expand the list?

I was reading Mike Russo's mailbag at The Athletic. He mentioned Brock Nelson's agent Ben Hankinson said the Avs are interested in keeping Brock Nelson. The Avs would need to move out significant money. Probably Valeri Nichushkin's $6.125M. Colorado needs that 2C behind Nate McKinnon. Casey Mittlestedt wasn't the answer. Nazem Kadri left in 2022 and the Avs haven't filled that hole. Keeping Nelson would be their best option. Colorado sent Calum Ritchie to the Islanders for Nelson.

In last years playoffs at times Mika looked like a kid trying to defend a grown man vs Barkov. It didn't make me think less of Mika. Just made my respect for Barkovs game grow. He positioned his big body very well.

I’ve always thought that Zibanejad to Colorado made sense. They also have the type of contracts that could offset some of the salary. Colton and Girard would be useful pieces in NY.

Need to fix the team down the middle. Another Center and 2 LHD.... while also 'changing the culture'.

The bottom line... We need to move on from Kreider and Zibs just for the 'culture shift'.

Nobody wants to talk about it because the narrative has already declared Barkov a great leader, clutch player, and guy you win with, but Barkov's playoff results have been very poor. Over the last 3 years he has scored 1.63 pts/60 in the playoffs which is 10th on the team amongst players with 10+ games (7th with 20+ games). In the regular season in that time frame he scored 2.31 pts/60. 61.8 GF% in the regular season with a 58.1 xG% down to 55.4% and 52.7% in the playoffs.

That is a worse pts/60, and GF% (same xG%) than Mitch Marner

Last season when we played Fla I kept thinking we were very lucky because while Barkov seemed to be dominating Mika at times but he was not really scoring. He was snake bit on a few chances and Shesty takes some responsibility as well. I'm not in to stats as much as you are. The points per 60 may be useful in some situations but that does not lower my respect for Barkov and how he has been the #1 center on a Fla team that went to the last 2 Cup finals. Paul Maurice knows what he was doing with Barkov as his #1 center. Sometimes stats do not tell the full story imo.

He's a playoff choker but nobody cares because other players on his team have steped up. The defense is not a good excuse because it's also true of Matthews/Marner but nobody cares that they have shut down the opposition since they haven't scored enough themselves.

Leading his team in scoring plus his very good defense and a physical presence on the way to a Cup ring does not feel like a choker to me. I'm not saying he is the best player in the world but he is very good. Why would Paul Maurice play him so many minutes if he was choking?

Because Paul Maurice is a real human wasting his time with real life coaching instead of using Microsoft Excel like all great tacticians.
