Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

He can make one mistake and people will assign that stigma to him for the next half of the season.

Meanwhile someone like Lindgren could do 5 things that were just as dangerous but less obvious and another 3 things that were as obvious and it'd be mostly crickets from the same people.

And it isn't hard to be better than Provorov. He sucks.

Balls.
Crickets? I'm not sure which people you're referring to, but I'm pretty sure when Lindgren put 1 foot over the boards last season, the this board already had their fingers typing something on his negative impact.

Lindgren got roasted waaaaaaay worse than KAM and deservedly so. KAM has bright spots.
The difference is when KAM messes up, it almost feels like a sure goal in the back of the net. So all eyes, fingers and swear words are on him. "Another brain fart from Miller", is what you last remember as often those plays came out of nowhere with no scrambling pressure. Lindgren was a disaster, but it was such a disaster that you saw a lot before a goal took place.

That's the thing about KAM - he can play a really solid game and then he does that one thing that NHL players really shouldn't do and you're left shaking your head. Lindgren was limited by diminishing ability and playing in a role he should never have been in. KAM is all about just waiting for that next step and not making that terrible decision.

It was both for him. I can't tell you how many times he'd do something absolutely terrible and get bailed out by his goalie.

Exhibit A:

Would have been a much bigger deal had the puck gone in obviously but it gets lost in the sauce because Igor Igor'd.

Considering the situation, this is probably the worst thing he's ever done so it's an extreme example, but there are plenty of others.

And to answer your previous post, they existed (and still do.) Plenty of people here who think heart and soul are the main ingredients to winning hockey and will forgive poor play because a guy blocks a few shots and bleeds on occasion.

I don't think anyone is contesting that Lindgren had been awful for two straight seasons, nor was anyone broken over the fact that we dealt him.

The difference is that Miller is a highly touted, valued around the league mid 20s guy looking at a potential big decision as to whether NYR are going to committ to him for a long time, in a big role, and Lindgren was never in consideration for that after 18 straight months of having a steep decline.

Explain to me how this lindgren or KAMs fault? Clearly it was 50 who blew his coverage.

The problem is this team’s defensive system. 70% on the players 30% on the coaching for not benching players for their effort or dumb mistakes. NYR has a horrible culture of softness and selfishness. Just look at the effort that Carolina or Florida or Dallas put in night after night. It reminds of the Montreal or Devils trap system but with a higher level of nasty!

I'm not defending Lindgren, at all. But again, it didn’t go in, and sometimes fans remeber the brain farts that do go in. That's why there's so much hate on Miller. Lindgren was atrocious. I am I no way defending him. We ripped him every game thread.

I suspect they mean the kind of pass that lindgren got among the hockey community who always saw him as a "warrior" and "glue guy" and "such an important partner for fox" and all that crap

Lindgren is the one who threw the puck to the middle of the ice for some insane reason. Perfect pass to Svechnikov, just insane

e: the frame before (or approximately) the puck is sent to the middle of the ice where svechnikov gets it. Stick with white tape is Lindgrens

If you watch from here it's clear that Lindgren backhands it towards the middle of the ice

Maybe he thought he could hit Cuylle, maybe he thought his teammate coming towards him would pick it up (Smith?)

Either way, what a massively bad play

Staple is the biggest idiot in the world. These are the moves he would make for his ideal offseason:

• Traded Kreider to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a pair of third-round picks.
• Traded Zibanejad (with 20 percent salary retention) and a second-round pick to Chicago for future considerations.
• Signed unrestricted free agent Brock Boeser to a three-year deal worth $6 million per season.
• Signed UFA Adam Gaudette to a three-year deal worth $2.8 million per.
• Signed restricted free agent Will Cuylle to a two-year deal worth $2.75 million per.
• Signed RFA Matt Rempe to a two-year deal worth $1.25 million per.
• Signed RFA Adam Edstrom to a one-year deal worth $1 million.
These numbers and returns make no sense to me.

Staple needs to quit covering the Rangers. He's embarrassing himself.

I know some people think if our coaches just bench some of our players they will try as hard as the guys on Carolina and Florida. They might for a few games but they will quickly fall back in to their own modes. Coaching can not change some of these players physical and mental motors. Some of our guys would be fine at Carolina/Florida's pace but many would not imo.

Thats his ideal offseason as an Islander fan.

He's probably still trying to argue with people that Kreider's back was an issue all season even though we now know it hasn't been an issue for months.

lol what

is he going off the "you just need to get rid of Kreider and Zibanejad no matter what" premise?

The Mika numbers alone. Retention + a 2nd for "future considerations"
Mika is still an NHL player. Retention on 4 years of salary is huge. Almost entirely unheard of without an absolute haul.

PLD got moved for no retention... And PLD was absolutely worse than Mika the previous year. Plenty of assumption that Mika will bounce back.

Hertl, who has worse numbers than Mika, with retention and a 3rd returned David Edstrom and a 1st. Staple has no clue. I honestly think he's an Islanders fan and writes these articles to sway public opinion to tank the value of NYR players.

Hertl is actually a fantastic comp. 2 years into extension. Underperforming.
Never had the high's of Mika.
Hertl has never scored 40, never been a point per game player. makes less than 500k less than Mika.

It's a little worse. Mika has 5 years left until his term ends in 2030. I think he can be better but I don't think he's a 1C quality center anymore. I don't think he's as good as JT and I even prefer Trocheck. I'm kind of thinking if Mika returns he'll at least be on the right wing as much as he's at center or he may transition pretty much to RW which isn't necessarily bad. RW has been our weakest forward position.

Going forward 5 years into the future the $8.5 will be more manageable. But a five year older Zibanejad if he's already started to decline I'd rather not have to deal with. If not this year I think we're going to have to find him another home in the next couple years.

Doesn’t begin to address the issues on the back end

None of this makes sense. Terrible job by Staple.

If the Panthers and Stars win, 3/4 teams in the CF are repeats. The other team is Carolina who were there in 2023 and have been on the periphery several times. Same old shit.

It may have been @McRanger92: somebody mentioned that we're going to be seeing a lot of change.

I agree with that. A lot of teams are gonna become woke to the idea that a dollop of teams are on another level and the rest just aren't good enough. We're not alone in that.

Somebody out there is going to be able to capitalize on the chaos by making the right moves and break into the elite.
