Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Well I like this guy!

In all seriousness, this is an excellent post. I think the players are super important. They're the most talented people in the world. And when I say that, I'm guilty too. Sometimes I'm not nice. I dump on players. I get emotional.

I also think the fans are super important. Without us, there's no reason for them to play. They'll leave the Rangers someday. I won't.

*whispers*
I think the people are really not important are the people who actually suck most of the money out of this product but let's not get me started again.

Within that, there's a relationship between two very important parties, and the question of how much we owe each other, which I guess depends on the situation.

The whole "you're getting paid" thing bothers me in particular because I just don't think it's effective. People look at the Panthers as a model, right? I don't see a team that's showing up for a paycheck. I see a team that has a good culture and loves each other. "Buck up because we're paying you" is not how you build a good culture, which is a thing that people want.

Not to mention players effectively get paid $0 to play in the playoffs, and look how hard they try.
They don't get much but they do split the playoff/cup pool.

Players akso someimes have bonuses tied to playoffs.

I think this was last years splits.

Presidents’ Trophy winner — $500,000
First round losers — $2 million ($250,000 each to eight teams)
Second round losers — $2 million ($500,000 each to four teams)
Third round losers — $2.5 million ($1.25 million each to two teams)
Stanley Cup Finalist — $2.25 million
Stanley Cup Champion — $3.75 million

And those numbers are split among players + coaches and locker room staff at times.

Not a lot but ill take that cup split so i can have a nice vacation or buy a car ☺️

They all have bottom pair salaries or are young guys on ELCs. Some of them have outperformed them. They didn't go out and spend ~5-6M or so each of them and then play them in lesser roles.

And you can't really use TOI numbers on their own much in the playoffs, especially early. They get thrown off because of OT. Toronto has had 4 OT games. Edmonton 3. Carolina 3 including two 2OT games. I suppose you could take the players total TOI and take it as a percentage of the teams total TOI if you like, but if you don't you're not fairly comparing players between teams.

I was mainly using TOI during the regular season only

The amount say mcdavid would get for a sc win. Might be close to his individual game check, to play 16+ extra games.

It is not a lot in the big picture but if you told the guys it was a new luxury car instead you might be surprised how many of them would want it.

FL plays the way they do because they have the "right" players - which is ultimately the overarching argument by those who say that players are not entitled to get updates into what management's actions - these Rangers players are not the right players to win the Cup with, so management miscommunication is just a deflection.

I mean did you see how Paul Maurice talks to his players, as an example? Zibanejad would be in tears within 2 sec of the first f-bombs describing his effort. And I'm sure that Barkov and others were very close / friendly with Huberdeau (especially) and Weegar.

Once larkin gets dealt I really wonder/hope nyr is in on him but the issue is Detroit is going to be taking a step back when they make that trade (on purpose) and nyr doesn't really have the assets for Larkin unless they trade someone like Gabe.

Zibanejad and our 1st. Who says no?

I'm sure 2-4 days of golf trying to fulfill a dream will absolutely flush the upcoming season down the drain. The nerve of this guy to take a few days off in the off season. No wonder this is a country club team with guys not dedicating themselves to hockey 365/24/7. What are we paying them for?
Phil Kessel was a training icon....hot dogs and Cups !

I'd give Cuylle 8x6.5 without a moments hesitation. He plays to win in a way that facilitates winning. If he isn't scoring, which he seems to just find a way to do regardless of his linemates, he is pushing play forward.

He is Bennett but a wing and our guy. We don't need someone's else's guy to do it. He already does it. And is younger. And he is a ranger. No need to get another mercenary. Reward the guys that brought it through the whole system.

I don’t see why Cuylle would sign an 8 year contract extension when he’s due to hit UFA a summer after the cap’s expected to shoot up to $113m. He’s leaving a shit ton of money on the table when there’s no reason to.

I wish the Rangers had 5 more Will Cuylle's. Hopefully, Drury clears out the malcontents to give Cuylle more opportunities.

I wish he could convince Crosby to come to NYC . Imagine guys like Crosby and MacKinnon heading overseas to play when they could be out golfing...that is how we roll in Maritime Canada !!! Those guys are beauties ! Real hockey players ...that is where the Rangers should have been pushing Lafreniere for.......a trip overseas to play with winners .

He's 23 years old and he's made what, a couple mil?

He's only really had one good year (not a criticism, just the reality) and I think he could be tempted with a sure thing.

I don't think you're wrong, I just think it's possible.

If was in his shoes, and I had one solid season under my belt in the hardest league in the world, I'd have a hard time turning down a guaranteed 50+ million dollars.

They didn't want him, and who can blame them.

Salaries are just going to inflate the 30% that the cap is going up IMO. If he signs a bridge for 3-4M now and is due for what is now 5M, he’s looking at 6.5M under a cap of 113.5.

There’s always factors at play like injury risk, but I just don’t see it happening. The hypothetical 6.5x8 now is nearly 8.5x8 in 4 years.
