Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Rangers probably should keep Lafreniere. His value is low and he's a good 5v5 scorer on his worst days. If he moves his feet and gets in shape, that contract is a nothing burger for the production he'll give us. And that's even before the likely bump in PP time he'll recieve. He's kind of in the same boat as Kandre as much as Im down on both guys.

Theres a good young foundation on this team and it includes Fox, Lafreniere, Kandre, Schneider, Cuylle, Edstrom, Rempe, Perreault, Berard. We need a young center and a another young puck moving D. I dont think it's Zac Jones. I like JT, Trocheck and Borgens as far as the veterans go but they are more protected out of positionally necessity

Mika is not leaving the city. They are looking for a new home in the same area. Apparently one with less stairs.

-Chasing a 2 year old up and down 5 flights of stairs is not optimal.

I agree with your takes here but one major thing is if the Rangers begin to give Igor better support I expect he'll go back to being our best player. We need to straighten out the D. A young center would be nice but JT and Trocheck for now with a better defense system installed should be able to provide enough offense for the top two lines. The team has got to get back in tune with playing together and the new coaching staff have to get them back to that too. I don't think the Rangers have a bunch of awful players. I think last year was more about tuning out the coach to get back at their uncommunicative GM and then the defensive system was just trash. How many unforced uncharacteristic errors throughout the year? Just look at all the too many men penalties. How many times were we down 2 or 3 goals after 5, 6, 7 minutes?---not prepared to play from the opening face-off. How many points did we give away in the last 5 minutes of games? Many of our top players need to get their heads back on track or at least if they're still around this year.

With Igor I think it got to be just too much the team relying on him to pull a rabbit out of the hat game after game after game and Laviolette played him too much. There's a lot of psychology that goes with being a goaltender and when they're having a down period sometimes you need to give them some space and some games off to get their shit back together. Igor never really got a break last year. His posture at times was telling.......it was just too much reliance on him saving the day all the time and it seemed to weigh on him a lot more than it did some others.

I do think it's possible to get something out of Lafreniere.

The more I watch this sport, especially with coaches being largely NPC's, the more I think guys just are what they are.

And a lot of them are. But it is possible. We talked yesterday about the 2014 team taking off when they added a bunch of late-breakout guys to the roster. Players do change and develop.

Somebody needs to be a real hardass with Lafreniere, but not just a tough guy act. There needs to be communication. Get it the video room. This is what we want. Every time you do this, you're gonna sit.

And for god sake, get the puck on net. He shot a ton in 23-24 and then went back to his normal shooting in 25. You shoot more pucks, you score more goals. It's science.

I agree about keeping Laf. I think he has the potential. I just do not know if he has the consistent hunger. Only time will tell. I would like him to pattern his game a bit more after JT style wise.

See, he’s trying to avoid exertion even when it comes to his kid, forget the Rangers. ;)

I also think last season was mostly an outlier. The Rangers will have depth down the middle which is a nice advantage. Panarin, Lafreniere and Cuylle are locks top-6 wingers. Their bottom lines are solid too. Defense is missing at least one quality LD and a structure. There will be something for Sally to work with.

Yeah, but his conditioning would be even better

It means that hockey and the Rangers aren't his life's top concern. With his ironclad long-term lucrative contract, he's waiting for the right staff and environment to come along like Goldilocks.
If we boo every time he touches the puck and when he scores, everyone stand up and turn their backs in silence - just make him cry every day - we can oust him know it!
