Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

I'd like to see Panarin and Schneider for Fiala, Clarke, rights to Gavrikov and a 1st.

Kreider and Z anywhere they want for picks/prospects.

Fiala-Miller-Perreault
Cuylle-Tro-Laf
Othmann-Brod/Parsinnen-Berard
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

Miller-Fox
Gav-Clarke
Soucy-Borgen
Vaak

Would have a crazy amount of cap space too.

Why would LA do this deal?

I wouldn’t trade a 29 yo Fiala for a 34 yo Panarin.

I wouldn’t trade Clarke for Schneider.

Add Gavrikov rights and a 1st? No way.

Im fine with keeping Panarin for one more year but I have no interest in extending him. Might as well listen to the offers if he's willing to waive. Rangers want to make core changes and need cap space. Pretty simple calculus.

I think the only pros of keeping him are that it's a contract year and he's always produced well when motivated (regular season) and that it keeps the FO from spending his cap space on other shit that isn't really needle moving - we're going to want space 2 summers from now.

I know there is some talk of replacing him with Marner but that isn't really a 1 for 1. Now you'd get back assets for Panarin but you're probably spending 1.5-2 million (at minimum) extra on Marner and that would probably require sending someone else out and takes you out of the running for any of the big tickets that may/will hit the market in 2026.

Marner is a better player and has way more positive impact on the defensive side of the ice but I don't think thats a guy I'm hitching my wagon to, even with him not panarin'ing in the playoffs (so far.)

Id retain on Panarin based on the return. Id be mostly looking for futures to be honest. If nothing else its ammo to add players now or next summer, especially because we're not going to have a first in one of these years. Im not too interested in the free agent market this summer. You laid out the exact same concerns I have about Marner. He's better and younger, but still undersized, a winger and historically not a playoff performer. The rest of the guys hitting the market are old and washed. 1 or 2 year deals for mid range guys is the only real market Id play in.

They wouldn't. But it's what I'd like to see. Haha

Teams have done dumber shit. Just look at the Rangers trade history going back to...forever. Ha

Edit: Also, I would actually be willing to just do Panarin and Schneider for Gavikovs rights, Clarke and a 1st. Then I'd sign Marner.

The thing about trades, and trying to make them up, is that players on your radar are good. That's why they're on your radar. The other team doesn't want to trade them.

It's probably somebody you're not thinking of. Who would have thought Derick Brassard before he came here? That's what a good trade looks like when you're the team trading a star for a set of pieces. One of those pieces breaks through after he's already on your roster.

It's not likely to be an established piece or one of their great prospects.

Panarin 50% retained for Turcotte, Clarke and a 1st

This is more reasonable, and Turcotte is a guy that both could be available and could still have potential.

Turcotte hasnt shown a ton but you mentioned him a few months back and its the type of guy who may just need a change of scenery and we need something young at C even if its not the sexiest player. Clarke would allow Drury to flip a defenseman for additional help. The first just helps cushion the blow from the JT Miller trade. Id prefer the 2026 from LAK.

Spiderman pointing at Spiderman at 5v5.

This is what you have to do. I'm not saying just look at charts like I do, but however they do it, they need to find guys that the whole world hasn't realized are good yet.

Florida built the entire 2nd tier of their core with this - Bennett, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Forsling.

Another guy with a Dan Muse connection, provided Museferatu sticks around under Sully.

Zuccarello and Stralman were two other guys we just plucked from nowhere that became big pieces. You could probably count McDonagh too.

The last guy we grabbed that wasn't a Rangers draftee that became a piece with the Rangers is probably Adam Fox. That's a massive add but it was like, several years ago now.

We badly need to win a couple of trades and/or breakout signings. It's been a minute and you can see the holes starting to form.

Difference being that Brassard was firmly established as a middle-6 center by then, even if that outcome was pretty disappointing for someone picked where he was. He'd had two 40+ point seasons when the Rangers acquired him, and was pacing for a 3rd one.

Alex Turcotte only has one full NHL season under his belt.

That being said, I don't mind Turcotte as a target for this kind of thing. I don't think it'll result in a Brassard/Zibanejad/Strome outcome, but they do need a 3C. While Turcotte didn't play C last year, he could come back to it and if he takes a step forward from last year, then he could be a solid get for that role.

I mean I'd wonder if that's not what they're trying to do with acquiring guys like Borgen, maybe even Soucy to a degree. Taking a flyer on Kaliyev, etc.

But also like, you gotta get actual good players not just throw a net and collect a bunch of crap and hope you can sift through it.

Honestly would be interested if they gave Kaliyev a real shot next season. He's a RFA and needs to be resigned but probably isn't gonna be expensive. Of course the question is where does he fit in a lineup but part of getting these players if finding places to play them so they succeed

Honestly, I thought Kaliyev was pretty solid here. Laviolette just had no interest.

yeah, same. I think that was a smart pickup and it's rough that he got hurt, but Laviolette obviously wasn't going to try to get more out of him
Maybe he's not a high scoring top six guy but a good middle six depth scoring guy, who knows. It's not like I feel the Rangers depth is fantastic

Add Parssinen too.

Stralman is a little less like the other guys who have been these kinds of pickups, mainly because there was a medical issue that the Rangers figured out when no one else had been able to.
