Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

For the record, ive always like Sullivan and his approach but he isnt the right coach for where this team should be headed.

Once again, the management believes this roster/core is better than they are. This club requires a bit of a tear down and i'd prefer a coach who is willing to define a culture over time, not come in and instantly start putting heavy expectations on a set of individuals who have proven they can't handle that type of pressure.

Im fine with a new coach levying high expectations on Igor, Fox, Lafreniere, Cuylle and whatever leftover veterans are here. We need to move away from Mika and Kreider. Panarin only has a year left and im sure theyll be after Eichel. I like Dan Muse but Sullivan is a good option.

Sullivan would be a disaster hire.

Literally the worst hire this team can realistically make (because Mark Messier is not a real thing.)
I don't see any way Sullivan is the hire. No playoffs for 3 years. Not in the 2nd round for seven years. They just saw what a professional dinosaur did with this group and Sullivan is the same guy.

Management does seem to learn from their own mistakes and correct them. I'm pretty not worried.

Gentlemen's bet that Drury slobbers all over Sullivan and hires him?

On the bright side, the team shouldn't have time overpay for 3rd/4th liners. Carrick, Rempe, Edstrom (who I'd like to see get some 3rd line minutes), Berard, Brodz (4th line/depth). Likely Othmann to start on the 3rd line.

Need to drain the swamp of at least 2 of the 3 in Zib, Kreider and Panarin.

Make a decision on K. Miller.

Give Perreault every opportunity in top line/top PP.

I think Panarin is staying this year. And Mika and Kreider were detriments to winning this year so im not seeing your logic.
You have to replace Mika with someone and for all his warts he still put up 60+ points.

Addition by subtraction only works when the player is worse than a bench player.
Mika isn’t that bad, just not worth an 8.5m contract.

Panarin is the player likely to get the biggest return, so why wouldn’t we move him?

He just isn't that good. He gets too much credit for winning 2 cups that had a roster with Crosby, Malkin and the baller version of Kessel. Like congrats, you're not a total f***ing idiot but you also haven't won a playoff series in 7 years when you haven't had all the cards stacked in your favor (and you can only blame getting Jarry'd for one of those years.)

Pittsburgh may have been worse defensively than we were (and according to CSA, they were the worst defensive team in the league by a f***ing mile.)

He has no ties to the main guys on the roster outside of a few games of Kreider (who is toast) so on that end if you're looking for a silver lining there it is, but I have zero confidence that he wouldn't be another vet loving Panarin enabler.
Agree and only even a thought about Sully is unlikely event there are no better options.

Whoev we sign, should be short leash on a short contract.

The guy I want, as I said before, based on strong performance w/Hartford before, and some good results w/Oil, is Knob. if he becomes available

He demonstrates an ability to develop youth
Once and for all peeps, admit I'm right about this, stop w/win now

What would Mika's point totals be without powerplay time? We have other players who should be getting those minutes.

As for Panarin, Id move him if he's willing to go but hes only got a year left and is still productive. The Rangers will be looking to make the playoffs next year regradless. Might as well keep him around and move him at the deadline if the season goes south.

Sullivan is just a too comfortable decision for Drury to make. I think he should look elsewhere. If he does choose Sullivan and things don’t go right I suspect Sullivan will be the boat anchor around his neck that takes Chris Drury down for good.

That said I don’t think it’s fair to judge Sullivan entirely upon his past 3/4 years with the Pens. They have been hampered more by bad general managing decisions and an aging roster along with the years long gutting of their development system which they didn’t start to address until last year and primarily then with the Guentzel deal to the Canes.

I think Perreault should start in the AHL. Give Othmann a chance at top 6 minutes early in the season. The eye test was better than the production last year. decent puck handler and willing to go to the net.

I don't know how people think otherwise. Both are BU alums, USA Hockey connection, both northeast guys. Just makes too much sense. Sullivan has to be the overwhelming favorite to be the next coach whether we agree with it or not.

The same people shitting on Sullivan are the ones who would jump all over Knoblauch. It’s not Sullivan’s fault his first head coaching gig had him coaching superstars. Also, those superstars were on the backside of their careers and their defense always overachieved.

I’m not saying he would be my first choice but I could see the appeal.

I'm not that crazy about Knoblauch either.

I want the guy that really turned the Oilers into a good team before Knoblauch came in and reaped the benefits of their goaltending luck turning around.
