Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

And so again, If you don't think this organization is sending a big middle finger to the entitled core I don't know what else you need to see at this point. Announcing extension for Drury right after these exit interviews where the divas are basically crying about what's been going on here should be perceived as absolutely nothing short of a shut up and do your job signal to everybody, along with the fact that they're sulking and whining isn't going to dictate what happens in the organization anymore. There's more Carnage coming...

If there was a love button I’d hit it.

I mean, think about this list for a second, including trying to remember what led to some of them:

DeAngelo waived and suspended from the team
Andersson going back to Sweden
Kravtsov going back to Russia
First Panarin incident
Fallout from the Wilson incident
Jim Ramsay firing
Prohibiting team social media staff to interact with the team
Handling of the Goodrow buyout
Handling of the Trouba trade
Multiple players publicly criticizing handling of ice time, including one being almost immediately traded on making the comments.
Second Panarin incident

That's all happened in the last 6 years, and I'm not even sure I got all of them.

In the midst of that, you have the team collapsing in the 2020 qualifying round, the team getting absolutely embarrassed in a couple of huge games against the Islanders in 2021, the team collapsing in the 2023 first round, and the team collapsing for basically the entirety of the 2024-25 season.

You might add the Lundqvist buyout to that list, in terms of things that damage the culture. It's a problem, and I honestly hate it. The players are a big problem with plenty of it, but frankly the whole organization needs to be cleaned out and rebuilt from the ground up.
I'm not sure that people might be missing the fact that might have actually been the directive to Drury. See if you can fix this with what's here, but if not start gutting it. Him getting an extension should tell everybody that he has been tasked with extracting the cancers in this organization whether it's more specific individuals or if it's attitudes/auras/culture. You can't buy a culture change, Brooke's nailed it when he brought up the Mike Keane signing from the past where they tried to buy a culture change and buy leadership. He left out the fact that that same summer they tried to do the same thing with Brian skrudeland with the same results. It's got to be born from accountability. If the players aren't going to hold each other accountable then it's going to take some SOB coach to make their lives absolutely f***ing miserable if they're not going to do it on their own. This roster legitimately needs shock treatment right now...

What do you call this then?

anyways, with Drury locked in I’m excited for the team to defer the pick this year to Pitt and then trade whatever pick they get for some bullshit so Drury can attempt to make the playoffs next year.

So daddy Dolan doesn’t get mad

Back to my afternoon

I'll add to this that this should also be a giant middle finger to everybody that was trying to call me out months ago telling me I didn't know what was going on when I was saying that there was a legitimate war of locker room and management coming.

Once you have divas trying to use the media day to plead their case together and why they were not treated nicely and not coddled and such even after the owner joined the GM for exit interviews and then the outcome of all of that is for the owner to basically flip off every single one of those players by signing the GM they hate to an extension. It's hilarious is some ways

I wonder just how much Mika's heart dropped in that moment when he heard Drury is extended and not fired because he has to know that the writing is on the wall for him after his performance regarding his contract the other day to the media. Bro, either waive your clause and get out of here or shut your f***ing mouth and go to work, otherwise shit's going to get even more uncomfortable for you around this organization

Drury has no reason to shy away from hiring a first-time head coach or someone in just their second NHL stint. With solid job security, there's no pressure to bring in another recycled coach chasing their fifth or sixth opportunity. It's time for a fresh perspective behind the bench.
Bro you’re getting Rick Tocchet or whatever other recycled bullshit coach who is looking to win now

Dolan isn’t giving him an extension to be shit for a few years with a coach that has no experience

Yeah maybe if this is a legit vote of confidence he might have the time to actually work on some stuff.

It's probably cope but it's something to think about. :dunno:

I’ll say this, it’s very interesting to me that after Dolan sat in the exit interviews, he clearly took away the fact that Drury is in the right and the right person for the job.

I’ll also say that if I was a young coach looking for a good starting point for my NHL coaching future, I’d feel far more comfortable knowing that my GM was expected to be around a while and had the buy-in from ownership.

What would be pretty awesome, and I’d be really excited to see the turn around in emotional responses here, is if Drury was able to convince Carvel that his opinion on player personnel was going to be valued and be part of the decision making process, along with Muse who IMO was one of the organizations better hirings, to help propel the team forward.

Drury and his scouting staff clearly have been targeting the NCAA’s. Muse has big ties in to that group. They’ve had success with players from there. Carvel would make sense.

The ice cream people?

I mean take a step back and Drury came in and instantly made this team a playoff team, got them to the ECF twice, a Presidents Trophy...so what if this was a down year?

From Dolan's perspective Drury has done great
If Drury sold to Dolan that first two post-Gallant years were meant to be for (re)evaluation the state of the team followed by making necessary adjustments - then Drury not only accomplished this but he also significantly over performed economically in 2023-2024 by going to ECF so missing playoffs this year were not only covered but also further offset by RIFs / savings for players' salaries.

I hope this means that Zibanejad and Kreider at the very least are gone with this news. But Drury also has responsibility here.
