Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

The Mika quote and this quote are pretty annoying.

KAM was asked about his shitty year then he immediately deflects blame towards the team and the noise. GTFOH.

But he had "a willingness to get better" as if it was something that didn't require him actively striving to achieve it... Holy FVCK.

And your obsession with Mika exceeds @Webster's obsession with Zuc, so really can't take anything you say about him seriously. Hope you enjoy the 20-40 and -20 again next year cause I won't.

He's never bragged about the usage of Mika's groins off the ice so this is false.

It's been a while, but Webster was f***ing weird.

1) I would fire everyone in scouting at every level and start over. The players we target are garbage.

2) This team needs another very good defenseman. First-pair caliber. Drury's solution for the defense has been to put Fox with a bunch of bottom pair guys and it sucks. Drury is very much part of the problem on the blueline. He doesn't have a Panarin or a Zibanejad there taking up huge money with a clause. There's no excuse for his plug fetish.

3) We need another forward with a motor and 5v5 production, preferably who can play center or wing. I'd like to get Peterka but I think Buffalo is gonna f*** with us just to f*** with us like they did with Eichel. Maybe we can get McLeod. I'd also kick the tires on Dallas if they get knocked out. They're gonna be looking to change things and everyone they draft is a hit.

4) I'd probably pull the trigger on Panarin at this point. Again, you got Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, LA, Vegas, Minnesota. THREE of them are gonna lose. There's gonna be some teams in the West this summer that are pretty reactionary.

5) Play Brett Berard like 50 minutes a game.

I hate doing trades because what are the odds I speak the name of the player we get? What are the odds it's even realistic? So I'm just gonna make something up. We got Rossi, McLeod, and Sergachev. There you go.

Cuylle-Miller-Zibanejad
Berard-Rossi-Lafreniere
Kreider-McLeod-Othmann
Rempe-Carrack-Edstrom

Miller-Fox
Sergachev-Borgen
Idk Somebody- Schneider

Yeah, I'm gonna keep Kreider for now. I don't think he has much value. Gabe is in the AHL for now. I don't think he's ready. He replaces Kreider when he gives me a reason to. I traded Trocheck. Where? I don't know.

We're younger, faster, and a lot better at 5v5.

And I think that team I posted still sucks so I would probably just tear it up, but you're probably right that that's not happening, so that's my best crack at not doing that.

Yeah, it's easier said than done and I made a bunch of shit up, but ultimately what I'm looking for are major changes to try to make this team better at 5v5 and upgrade their motor. I don't see Drury making major changes. He's trying to tweak around the margins on a team that isn't that close to being good.
To be honest, I don't hate any of that and agree with most of it. But like you said, easier said than done.

And the reality of it is that Drury doesn't want to get fired. He looks like an idiot if he tears it down and it blows up in his face. He doesn't have job security, which is a good thing, and that is why he won't do the aforementioned. If he had security like a Don Sweeney, I would bet that he would blow it up like Don Sweeney.

I wonder if one of the questions for potential head coach candidates is "do you have the balls to sit Zibanejad or play him 5 minutes per night?"

It all about balance.

Brian Cashman could shoot Aaron Judge and get a contract extension. You don't want your GM to have that type of job security.

At the same time, papering over holes just to make it to next year also isn't good.

I'd like for us to have a GM with a reasonable amount of leash, but it's James Dolan, so...

The thing is, if Drury is really trying to save his job and make the playoffs next year he's not going to accomplish it by trading Kreider, Zib or Panarin for futures. Even with Miller and Trochek here you need more than two guys that can put the puck in the net. It's going to cost a package of youngs guys like Berard, Othman, and picks. Sans Perault, there is not one impact, stud young player on this roster or in the system. A player like Cuyle is a vital part of a cup winning roster but he's not a lead horse. Same as Berard, same at Othman, assuming he scores a goal ever. Or even better, package Laff and Miller for that C or LD. They are what they are. I feel like Schneider has more room to grow than either of those two lunkheads. This team is in no-man's land right now. Not good enough to compete, not good enough (or willing enough) to stink. This is Drury's mess, he created it.

Really making a bit of a leap based on the quotes above. Starts off by mentioning the Goodrow situation followed by the noise surrounding Trouba during the summer and leading up to the trade. Second quote reads more like a threat that management better play nice or else.

I've watched hemorrhoid commercials with more emotion than these.

As a fellow Zibanejad defender I admire Siddi being his strongest warrior but he has nothing on Webster.

Webster hung up pictures of Zuccarello from his ceiling like all those air fresheners from the sloth scene in Seven.

Webster practiced cutting up pictures of @GoAwayPanarin with a katana in his living room until his landlord threatened to take the security deposit so now he does it with a pool noodle instead.

I feel like people just don't remember how extreme Webster actually was.

Also tbh I would be more inclined to agree with Mika’s stance if we didn’t watch his line get absolutely caved in the playoffs last year (esp the Florida series), and then see him take absolutely 0 responsibility for that. I don’t think he’s a bad dude or ducking it intentionally or anything, but it’s been tone deaf at best from him the last few seasons.

The problem with Mika quotes is this: he thinks a top class professional sports team is like a normal office workplace. It's not.

He thinks that the organization should be very open about the direction from top to bottom, and the leadership group of the players should be involved in all these discussions (at least to inform, if not make decisions). Well too bad, that's not how 99% of the organizations in the top of the sports pyramids work. Players play, and lead among themselves. Coaches lead the players. Management leads the coaches and players. Owners rules above all. This is how it goes. It's more like a military organization than a modern small company structure.

Now, there might be certain exceptions, where a player is of such an importance to the organization, that the organization might need to actually serve the player, instead of other way around. There is no such player in this organization, much less Mika Zibanejad. Fox a few years ago maaybe. You can think of Quinn Hughes as one in this league right now, and even that dynamic exists mostly because of his contract status. They need to keep him happy. McDavid is one another player where I'd expect the team to maybe keep him informed about stuff, but even they didn't even inform him about the Bowman hire. On the other hand, it's above his level so why should they. Colorado Avalanche didn't ask MacKinnon or Makar about their opinion of trading Mikko Rantanen. They just pulled the trigger.

I understand, that the way Drury went on about the Goodrow trade/waive, the Kreider/Trouba memo and Trouba trade is not necessarily the standard way of doing things around the league. But it's not really anything outrageous. If you (Mika) feel that the organization did a dirty on those players and the whole team that way, that is your opinion. But do realize, that you are not going to get any more transparency in any other organization around the league. And certainly not you, not even if you are wearing an A.

So TL;DR: shut the f*** up, and do your job. What you are changing is not a reality around the league, or the sports world at large. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you can maybe focus on your job which is to play, and not worry about how the team is constructed.

I'm so tired of people passing the buck.

Show me the NYR players that say, 'I did not play well. I did not play up to my contract. I did not play hard enough. I'm the only one that can change that and I plan to earn the fans trust back.'

Show me those players. Those are the guys that I would welcome back.

My manager just fired a friend of mine. He had been underperforming and goofing off, but man did I like him. What a swell guy.

IDK if I can continue working right now. I need some time to process this. I think I need like 6 months at the very least. Don't fault me if I slack off at work. I'm grieving the loss of my friend, who I will never speak to again...or at least not for another few hours.

Even though your friend gets to continue making millions of dollars with a competitor...

Pretty much what Laf said. A couple of them said they were disappointed with their play/seasons, no? Of course not Pan, Mika or Kreider... you know the veterans, the example setters.
Kandre had a weird response, like he was disappointed with his season but it was due to him not just mysteriously "being better." Not to pile on the kid but he seems a bit of a head case.

EF mentioned Colorado offered Panarin a four year contract worth $13M AAV in 2019 on their long 32T podcast from last Saturday. They were concerned about their other contract extensions in the future. He was answering a podcast listener question if teams will offer more money and lesser term with the salary cap increasing.

Panarin would probably waive his NMC for Colorado.

Necas has been quiet in the Dallas series so far.

Lindgren was the Avs best player.

Is Tocchet the Rangers top choice? He would probably bring Adam Foote with him to NY. Sullivan is staying. No Quenneville. Torts make no sense. I don't see David Carle leaving Denver to coach the Rangers. A first time HC. Depends if the Rangers plan to clean house this summer. The first time HC will be second guessed by Mika on every decision. Quinn was too tough. Too involved. A micromanager, He was in the room too much. Gallant was too hands off. The players wanted more structure. Laviolette was supposed to be more disciplined and structured. He was tuned out after one season. Brooks was right about this group and the coaches.

The Flyers will be very interested in Tocchet. JT Miller and Tocchet had a very good relationship in Vancouver. Tocchet and Foote know Soucy very well. Tocchet won the Jack Adams last season.
