Speculation: - Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Let Pittsburgh have this year's pick, and aggressively shop Kreider, Zibanejad, and Panarin, at the very least. If teams want to have conversations about any other player, listen closely.
If the idea is to trade those players and tank next year, sure, give up the pick. But you know Drury has no plan to do that. He needs to save his job, and he won't do it by triggering a rebuild.

Since @Machinehead had mentioned potentially doing a 100th anniversary team thing this offseason, I'll throw my initial roster locks in here:

X - Ratelle - Gilbert
X - Messier - Bathgate
X - Boucher- Cook
X - X - X

Leetch - Fox
Park - Greschner
Howell - X

Lundqvist
X

Im not convinced Drury is going to making moves to save his job this summer. I think he has more job security than his detractors want to acknowledge. Seems like he and Dolan are in relative lockstep in terms of knowing they need to continue moving on from the old guard. Kreider will be gone. I think the odds of Panarin being gone have risen significantly in the past 48 hours. Mika want to stay but he may change his tune as his peers are moved out. Even so, I think he can meld fairly easily with the new culture they attempt to foster. Low maintenance guy who shouldnt be in a primary leadership[ role imo.

My big hope would be that they dont try to go for a retread like Mike Sullivan, who is a Laviolette clone. Hire a young coach from the AHL or college ranks who can implement a system and grow with the many young players we still have. Lean on Igor, Fox, JT, Trocheck, Cuylle and Lafreniere. There are pieces here. We arent starting from scratch. Take a step back in expectations next year to build some flexibility for the 2027 season. I still expect them to be very much in the mix for a playoff spot next season, even if we acknowledge going in that they arent a top tier contender. It's easier for me to see sunlight now that the horrors of this season are mercifully over.

I think you need Kreider on this. Second or third line LW.

Backup goalie should be Giacomin.

If Sullivan is available there’s no world where he’s not the next coach

David Carle isn’t coming anywhere near this team so that is a pipe dream.

My criteria was "Among the best players in the league during their prime" for setting up the locks.

LWs will be some combination (I think) of Vickers, Hadfield, Kreider, Graves, Panarin (ew), Bun Cook.
C 4 is likely Tkaczuk but I could hear arguments for Espo
RW 4 is ugly, you could throw a LW there and I wouldn't argue.
3RD is probably Frank Patrick or Reijio Ruostolainen
G could be Richter, Eddie, or even Shesterkin

EDIT: Honestly there's an argument that X (Bun Cook?) - Boucher - (Bill) Cook could be the first line too, a lot of folks don't realize just how good the Bread line was nowadays

i think moving kreider/panarin and keeping mika is the easy choice at this point. mika’s play the second half of the year really proved to me he wants to be here. Can’t say the same for the other two. And I sincerely doubt he’s a ringleader in the mutiny.

kreider is 100000% there

See my response to Mike. LW is a bit of a mess where there's actually a surplus of options, but none of them are such 100% locks for a given slot that they *had* to be in the locks list. I was planning on doing the list of X slots but then it got asked in a reply and i just put them there instead

unfortunately panarin is easily our best LW historically. He’s the only one of those guys who was truly one of the best players in the league at his peak. All of Kreider, Hadfield, and Graves had one really big year, though Kreider was definitely the best goal scorer among them IMO. Vickers had a really nice four year peak but fell off pretty quickly.

Honestly as a whole we have a pretty shallow All-Time roster, especially considering we're an Original 6 Franchise.

Its not worth fighting him if he's digging his heels on the NMC. He can still PK, play W or C, win faceoffs, etc. Id like him off the PP because he hasnt been effective there in awhile but he still does a lot of little things that help you win that CK and Panarin dont anymore.

After last night Zibs stats will still attract another team. I was surprised how many assists he ended up with in such a rough season.

yeah we have 4 cups inna century for a reason lol

With Bill Cook for instance, people are going to look at his 366 points in 475 games and discount him (There's already someone who thinks Zibanejad is better than Frank Boucher bc Zibanejad had more points lmao). But they won't realize that was 4th in the league over that timeframe AND his NHL career started at age 30 and he played til 40.

I actually don’t mind keeping Mika if he’s moved to RW. I thought his game really improved when Miller came in.

Center and a legit, Top 4 shutdown LHD are pretty desperately needed. I always thought that was a gaping hole left over after they traded McDonagh.

DO NOT give away a chance to land McKenna.....I'm hoping everyone has watched the last two World class plays by McKenna .....AMAZING Player !!!! The race to the bottom will be hot and heavy next season .

If Sullivan lands here then we already know the next move.....the Rangers trade the 26 pick for Crosby in a Messier like package .....it is so the Ranger franchise . We get 2 years of Crosby . They get 16 years of a promising young stalwart at center. Yup...almost a done deal LOL.....just gotta add in the other pieces .
