Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Hard not to notice the folks who are calling out JT Miller, who has been back for 15 minutes, and excusing the veterans who have been here the better part of a decade. Not saying I was over the moon with JT after his arrival but come on. “Showing your ass” as my father would say.
This team sucks eight ways to Sunday and they traded a 1st for a 33-year-old.

Here's my ass.

i don't see anyone defending the vets, it's been vast condemnation and criticism levied towards them.

I was like the second person on this board tired of Zibanejad (rest in power Silverfish).

I'm just seeing the same old trend of Zibanejad saying something to the media and the usual suspects defaulting to "the problem is the attitude of a couple of guys."

And then Drury gets thrown under the bus because of course he does, and JTM inevitably gets brought up as a culture change type of player and that much copium could put down a horse.

They got Miller because Drury thought 11 weeks ago that this team was contending.

there were plenty of other free agent options that were much better than Lindgren. all he had to do was sign one of them and not Lindgren, it wasn't that difficult.

I think focusing on a guy on a 1 yr deal for 4.5M that ended up in multiple draft picks, a 7D, and Parasinnen is the least of Drury's issues. This wasn't a lose for the Rangers.

And, judging by the year that ensued, it looks even smarter in retrospect.

To an extent, I could see Drury going "Trouba and Goodrow sucked, and they needed to go. But they also held the other players accountable. Maybe a guy like Miller will do the same, while actually being a useful on-ice player, and help the team get to the next level".

I think that's phenomenally stupid personally, given I've had issues with the way the team plays for years. But if you think that tweak is enough to make the difference and push the team to the next level, fair enough. Instead we spent a 1st+ on a 33 year old, and are no closer to contending.

Should’ve posted a picture of Panarin. Also couldn’t care less that he’s 32. He can still play. He’s under contract to do something no one else on the roster can. And if they give up the 13th pick this year as they likely will, they fleeced Vancouver.

I don't know what kind of Alzheimer's or amnesia the Miller stuff is but it was roundly presented at the time as a prelude to a culture change in the short to medium term. Miller ALSO could have sparked something with the group and given them one last go but that wasn't the primary motivation.

If you want to argue they should have monetized the 1st + Chytil into an LD with term, that's a good discussion to have. Painting it like Drury was delulu about their contention chances is just not what happened but post on I guess.

Even knowing how the season ends you still do the trade 100 times out of 100 because PPG all situations centers are really good to have.

Also, i think people are being a little hard on Miller's response to the media. He said he let the noise get to him, but he very clearly said "I was a big part of the problem this year and I have to be better next year." Compare that to Zibanejad and Kreider's responses

Was Drury wrong to think that this team should at least make the playoffs? It’s valid to say they weren’t really a Cup contender (which clearly management knew post Panthers series with the moves they tried to make) but to say he was out to lunch to think that this team should have at least made the playoffs is being intentionally obtuse imo. The Miller trade would be looked back on as a turning point if the incumbent players didn’t continue to play like shit. Which they all did.

The criticisms of JT being a bad culture guy because “Elias Petterson’s charts look good” just don’t carry weight. Anecdotally or on the ice.

Don’t have an issue with KAM’s comments as much as I don’t believe in his upside anymore. Would like to see him traded. Rangers could use a McDonagh in his role. Whoops!

I just thought it was really odd when he said he was “ready to be better.” What does that mean? Did he think “being better” was going to be bestowed on him? Like I said, kid seems “off”.
