People don't aim high enough imo at the most important positions.

Same thing on defense. Everyone is looking for a partner for Fox. That's K'Andre Miller.

What they really need is a top pair defenseman to play on the second pair to comfortably push Miller up, without Miller having to stay on the second pair to carry some corpse.

That could be a lefty, or hell, stack up on the right side. I don't care. They need another excellent defenseman. Accept no substitutes.
Yes, couldn’t agree more.

I blame the 2019 Blues for putting the idea in everyone's heads that you can have an asswipes roster and just ROFL your way to the Cup.

Not usually!
I’m more convinced than ever that basically the only chance a team has to win the cup is to have one of the top-5 to top-8 centers in the entire league. All you have to do is go back 30 years, name the #1 center on each team and that gives you an idea of what type of #1 center you need to win the cup. It’s not a guarantee but it is a pre-requisite. Even more so than any other position. You can make a case for #1D as well but even then there’s been more cups won without a top-8 D in the league I think. Probably need both though.

I made a long post about this on the mains once and the only 1C's to win the Cup in the last 20 years that aren't probably Hall of Famers (most of them, easily) are Andy McDonald who had two Hall of Fame defenseman and a young Ryan Getzlaf, and Ryan O'Reilly who was on the once in a generation meme Cup winners that shouldn't be taken as a model.

listen bern i’m an OG Kreider fan but the excuses are weak. if his injury is affecting his play why is playing?
but his "excuses are not weak". Since he has the legit issue of injury, he has reasons which are not excuses.

Now as to yr fair pt, "why is he playing", I have explained.
Could be any of a couple of things.
It could be foolish pride on ck's part
could be arm twisting by GM or HC to push as far as they can
could be his health regimen says LIMITED and ISOLATED approach may at least be tried, i.e.,
play regular intensity-> play less -> play regular -> play full tilt -> play less again
something less this ^ rinse and repeat

WE DON'T KNOW
I am presuming whatev effort he is attempting is within parameters per his drs, but that doesn't mean he can just go full tilt all shifts like classic Kreider

I agree, it is preferable he NOT play, go LTIR, do any such rehab away from the club, and maybe we could have used cap space banked on ltir for another pick. But again we don't know who is pulling what strings.

We all have a right, if not also a responsibility, to be critical
that is fine
But with that comes responsibility to be fair

Just admit to the truth of the situation and repudiate those who would not be objective/fair.
That's all I ask

The 2019 Blues were very good. They had a voodoo doo doo start to their season despite playing well. It continued and their fortunes flipped as they almost always do.

The previous 2 winners were more asswipe-y. 2017 Pens were not good (especially the playoff edition) and I don't know how the 2018 iteration of the Caps ended up breaking through considering how much better they were the 2 seasons prior to that one.

Hockey is stupid.

It was a bad run of Cup winners that's for sure.

I think the 2019 Blues had the most ridiculous roster to win it if you just look at all the Cup winners on paper, but I do agree that they got good on-ice results.

The 2018 Caps were the opposite -- the roster made sense as a winner with all the stars they had but they were straight up a bad team the entire year.

The 2017 Pens were just weird. They were good that season (5th in xGF%) but played like absolute ass in two playoff series. One of the series they got heavily outplayed in was against the Capitals, who...were kind of trash! Because yes, hockey is stupid.

Goalies getting hot at the right time and that energy reverberating through the whole lineup.

JT Miller? …..

The thing I remember most about those Pitt and Wash teams were how fundamentally sound their D men were. They were always in the correct position, they retrieved the puck flawlessly and always got it to the forwards without bobbling the puck 2 or 3 times like our guys. They were machines. Excellent coaching of the fundamentals.

He’s a mid tier 1C and isn’t strong defensively so no he's probably not the guy to lead a team to a cup

Yes, but he isn't paid like an elite 1C.

I did the breakdown of his contract before he was acquired. His $8m cap hit is well within reason for a 2C, especially as we move forward with the cap increasing. Honestly, between him and Trochek, the Rangers should be set at 2C and 3C for the next few seasons at minimum. Their cap hits are reasonable for those spots

not too bad of an asswipe roster if they took out the badass bruins, a team that had some of their best players still playing during their prime.

and the right hot goalie just at the right time in binnington. yeo getting fired is also a big reason.

Letang missed their entire 2017 run. He didn't play a single game.

They won a cup with a defense that was led by Brian Dumoulin (the good version, but not a #1) and an old ass Ron Hainsey.

What ever the f*** they threw out there in the playoffs was ass cheeks. They were lucky to catch a Johansen-less Predators team and still barely squeezed by them. Of course, the 2017 Sens team they faced in the ECF was the most voodoo team ever. The NHL playoffs are less about being the best and more about being good enough and catching the right opponents along the way.

There's not a single Hall of Famer there. That's tits on a bull when it comes to Cup winning rosters.

there’s something to be said about building a roster of just a bunch of really good players

I get the 1C thing but the way hockey is I think your best course of action is just filling out the roster with as many good players as possible

ideally you’d have that one guy but i’d take my chances with a roster that’s super deep throughout vs what the Avs were running to start the year, i.e 4 superstars and 14 stiffs

for example bergeron is a great player and in terms of his defensive game its probably HOF level but he was a 57 point C the year the bruins won the cup. Krejci only hit 62 as well.

considering we’re the rangers and will never draft a McDavid/Crosby level center, I wouldn’t hate going for the 2011 B’s model roster. I mean, our 13-14 team was pretty close to that and was our best chance at a cup in my lifetime. That B’s team could have easily won more cups as well, they were a bounce or two away from winning 3 in 8

anyway, the overall point of my ramble is that while i agree that ideally we’d have a roster built around an elite #1 C, we don’t live in an ideal world and the Rangers will never ever ever have an elite 1C that was drafted by us in our lifetime. So if we go the other way and try to build just a really deep roster I’d be cool w it. Too bad drury likes collecting mid players instead of good ones

It's not something that's just ideal to have but you can work around it. 18 out of the last 20 Cup winners had a legit star at center. If you want to try to be the exception, you can, but they're exceptions for a reason.

People try to shoo away Bergeron but the guy is going to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. His entire prime was in a dead puck league.

trust me im not shooing away bergeron. I still think he’s a HOFer even with his (relative to other HOFers) meager point finishes, and personally I’m pretty strict with who I think should be a HOFer.

i don’t disagree though. i just know the reality we live in and the rangers are not legally allowed to draft a HOF center. And if we draft a good oke we must legally trade them (savard, weight, miller, etc)

Also Andy McDonald so 17 out of 20 at worst lol

Getzlaf wasnt quite prime Getzlaf yet in 07. Still good but he wasnt playing at a HOF level

The 18 was with McDonald.

17 if you don't want to count Eric Staal but peak Staal was an animal.
