I think Rangers could retain 2-2.5, and get something of value back rather than just buyout Kreider. Retaining 50% would be smarter than buying out Kreider. Obviously this comes down to the M-NTC wanting him, or Kreider agreeing to waive.
At $2.5MM retained it’s a cash push but bigger cap hit in the short term. Yes, if I can something of value back, I’m listening but I’m not sure what kind of return you can get. I suspect we will find out.

I should add it breaks my heart to see Kreider leave town in anything other than glory. A year ago, we were talking about his jersey ending up in the rafters. In a perfect world, he should retire as a Ranger.

It can be a cold business.

We've at least seen periods of high end skill from Miller and Lafreniere. We spent a decade talking about with Kreider waiting for him to put a full season together, and then he went on to have one of the best 3 year goal scoring stretches in Rangers history.

Really, we need multiple big pieces. Which is daunting. We have back end depth and filling stuff out. We at least aren't throwing out Tanner Glass and crap on the bottom 6.

We need a top pairing LD, either to pair with Fox or to pair with Borgen and put Miller back with Fox.

We need a top line forward [at any of the 3 positions], either at Center and Trocheck moves to 3C, or just a wing. Then we need another good top 6 winger.

Those 3 pieces are huge pieces. It isn't impossible, but it is a tall order. It really feels like that is what we need in order to feel truly comfortable going into next season with a hope of turning the team into a contender.

This would also involve shipping out Kreider, and one of Zib or Panarin. I think it is highly likely Zib is gone and Panarin plays out his contract, so we'll see.

If anything, we have a gluttony of good bottom 6 players (mostly 4th liners with potential really right now) that are young so they could be enticing players added into bigger trades. Edstrom, Rempe, Carrick, Berard, Othmann, Parssinen (plus some others like Sykora). Not all those guys will have a spot. One of Cuylle/Trocheck/Laf at least should be on the 3rd line next year in this scenario, and also a decent shot at Perreault coming in and he would be on the 3rd line too.

Schneider, Jones, Othmann, Zib, Kreider is a decent amount of pieces to move to get resources for making moves. Plus free agency.

Why for example was Laf good last year and as soon as he signs a new contract starts to suck. Why is Igor after signing a new contract also starting to suck. Why also is Kreider a shell of his former self. Why is Mika afraid of his own shadow. Why cant our power play score ever. Hate to say it but must be the coaching is horrible.
Igor has spent more time being average in the NHL than he has being elite. Lafreniere has been straight up bad outside of that one year.

It's not the contract that made suck. It's giving the players those contracts when they haven't shown you a good enough sample of success.

They did it with Borgen too. I mean, sure, he's been fine, but they signed him to an extension after about 10.7 seconds.

The Rangers defensemen have been bad for so long that Drury saw Borgen play solid for 2 weeks and said “I can’t let this get out the door” lmao

Also Laffy just isn’t that good. I’ve accepted it at this stage

The guy is currently on a 90 point pace what are you talking about. You're making 0 sense.
When I originally posted he was on a 87 point pace. Down from 120 pt season. That is a production decline of 28%. What about that is even remotely confusing? At this moment he’s on pace for 89 points. Also 90 points is not 100 points… so…. My point about not getting 100 points out of him remains.

A lot? I've posted before every single player from the goalies out have regressed this year! Every single one.
Maybe Cuylle and Rempe have done well

If one or two regressed it's a player problem, if everyone does it's a franchise issue. It's not like we're talking about over the hill players here.

Has Drury really been that bad? He has a lot of positive moves and some negatives. Im more of the mindset that he is just average. I think he wanted to revamp the defense in the offseason but Trouba threw a wrench into that. Im willing to give him another two seasons. Lets see what he can do with a lot of money coming off the books. The biggest issue imo is our Head coach and player development

List the positive moves

I'll do mine
Jt Miller
Jonathon Quick
That's it.

Give me a break cmon. You’re ignoring a lot to fit a narrative. Here are mine. Draft is harder to analyze since it hasnt been that long since he took over and theyre mostly later picks. Hopefully we can add Othmann to the list next year.

Trades:
Trouba
Lindgren
Borgen
JTM
Lundkvist
Georgiev
Goodrow (waivers)

Contracts:
Trocheck
Quick
Carrick
Gustafsson
Fox extension
Chytil extension
Lafreniere extension (jury still out but I have faith)

Draft:
Perreault
Emery
Chmelar
Mancini
Laba
Sykora
Fortescue

You have to bet on young players with the right long term contracts to build an elite team. The problem is we bet wrong, not because not enough had been shown. Every team that wins the cup has done so because of 1 or more great bets on future projection.

I could maybe buy that with Lafreniere considering his best season was his most recent one.

Igor was such a massive red flag that Reagan put sanctions on him.
