Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

Jones 9.12 xGF/60 on PP1 since Fox got hurt.

Fox has a 9.92 xGF/60 on the season.

It hasn't been shit.
I posted this in the post-game thread re: NYR PP:

"NYR PP has been 15% since coming back from 4N (2/22). 7 games, 3 for 20 with 26 shots. Granted, just 1 more goal turns that 15% to 20% which looks/sounds nicer so is 3/20 really that alarming in that timespan all things considered? I'd imagine this is part of the ebb and flow of things."

On the season NYR are basically 20% - NHL.com has them at 19.9% putting them at 21st in the league, tied with Minnesota and 0.2% ahead of the Blues. The PP is doing basically what they've been doing all season. One additional goal would put them at 20%.

Last year's NYR finished the year 23.8% on the PP. 8th in the league. The difference a few % makes, between 21st and 8th.

Since Fox was injured on 2/25, the PP has gone 1/14. The 1 PPG was vs NSH. Not the greatest, but Jones isn't the only person on the PP.

when you write a post like this it makes it seem like the only factor to be considered when evaluating a defenseman is height.
It’s not the only quality but he’s a big mean shutdown D who is an average skater. The cost was a 3rd and he’s signed for peanuts next year. No long term commitment. You need big D to win hockey games.

I really don’t understand not liking the soucy trade. Like you can hate Drury and want a better partner for Fox and still like the trade. It’s a little ridiculous to criticize this move IMO. Its a low risk move with relatively high rewards if Soucy comes in motivated
Rangers trade for a defenseman who is going to be asked to play above his skies, eats up cap space and replaces players in the lineup who are just as good or better. Why did we need another bottom pairing LD? I’d really love to know.

Drury has accumulated way more wins than losses as a GM.

This year alone he found his way out of Goodrow + Trouba, got a productive player + for Kakko, and turned a B-level package (Chytil, Mancini, protected 1st) into prime JT Miller.

He did the right thing and sold the expiring contracts at the deadline in Lindgren, Vesey, and Reilly Smith.

Soucy, Brisson, Parssinen, Vaakaneinan, Borgen, Kaliyev, De Haan all get a change of scenery and a chance to earn their place in next year's lineup.

Othmann, Berard, Perrault, Edstrom are all in the mix next year. The cap is rising and we have some space to re-sign K'Andre.

I'd say we're now officially through the first half of our retool (Panarin + Kreider decisions next deadline).

If Kreider and Fox get healthy in the offseason we should be pretty hype about next year.

Not necessarily, guess we will see.

I think people often make the erroneous assumption that if a player has one or two down years they are basically permanently bad now and can never play well again. And it's an even more assumption with defenseman since the stats for them are not particularly reliable and should be taken with very large error bars.

Drury defense force is really coming in hot
I don’t like when people can’t say a guy they don’t like did a good thing.

If you like Drury, you can admit the Buch deal was bad, you can admit he overpaid for Goodrow.

If you don’t like Drury, you can admit that he’s shown a penchant for pro scouting, particularly undervalued D this season with Vaak, Borgen, even de Haan looked good so far, and maybe say, this is a low cost move that may pan out for a guy who’s pretty highly regarded around the league (Soucy)

IF IF IF we could fleece someone then putting on a shelf any other aspect of it, we can go ahead and have a discussion.

classic Kreider from recent yrs gets that and more
today's damaged Kreider DOES NOT
peeps gotta admit that

sure someone may gamble, modestly
BUT NO ONE IS GONNA CRAZY OVERPAY FOR damaged Kreider

which begs the ?, if he doesn't get top $ return, why deal him for less?
If overpay is all you ever go for, you'll never pull the trigger. I can get not underselling. Nothing crazy about that. Loss aversion is some real shit. One reason to -- let's just say we get a fair-to-meh package for CK, not a crazy overpay, nor would it be getting fleeced. The question I have to ask is if that deal is making us a better team. That's the most important metric. It's not always "did we win the deal?" Neil Smith objectively lost many deals but he made the team better and his gambles paid off. Drury should definitely do NOT go Neil Smith on us. He's shown great restraint there.

My point is there could be trades out there involving CK where we don't hands down win but still make this team better. From an outsiders perspective, the Trouba deal was "fair-to-meh" but that deal made us so much better. Oh so much better. Like even if we traded Kreider one-for-one for Bischell, that could be a deal that just makes us so much better. Big LD for the future. Potential blue line consistency. CK's not doing much for us. When he is playing, he takes PP time away from someone. If he's not on PP1, Kreider is probably taking Othmann's spot on the PP.

I think the general sentiment on this board is that people were happy with how Drury was handling the deadline. But people are critical of one move and it's all "Oh of course, Drury can never do anything right with you people."

Most people on the board think Drury sucks, takes weekends off, and is a guy in over his head as GM. I’m not sure where you’re getting that from

You’re right, the way the world is now, we gotta pick a side and dig in forever and in perpetuity

On 32T they talked about Ryan Donato in CHI - 18 ES goals. 10th in the league. 28 y/o C. What would it take to get him? $2mil cap hit on an expiring contract. Panarin leads NYR with 14 ES goals. Cuylle with 13, Tro & Laf with 12.

Could look to trade Trocheck, although he is 4th in ES points for this team. I would love to see what K'Andre could get us.

Geekie in BOS has 15. Kreider for Geekie? He's also on an expiring $2mil contract. We can't retain anymore contracts after Lindgren, right? Maybe the money doesn't work there for BOS, idk.

Attitude issues? Dude was loved by his teammates.

Yeah his complete checked out on the ice and admitted mailing it in was certainly not an attitude thing. Attitude goes beyond just teammates liking you. He was pissy and demoralized because his name was in trade discussions. Or maybe I was just being generous by calling him a bottom pairing defensemen. The team is better with him gone.
