Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
I have seen this "country club atmosphere" wording thrown around a lot and it needs to die. It's speculation, imagination, or clinging to an idea that's not relevant anymore like it once was. It's not the late 90s or early 00s. This is not where players go to retire nor is it *the* place to go to get overpaid like it used to before the salary cap era. This is a team that's missed the playoffs a handful of times in almost two decades, and over that time did it with plenty of "homegrowns" (like Kreider). The Rangers spend, but they also compete.

Kreider has a reputation for training hard. Earning that reputation among professional athletes is... probably not easy. He has shown plenty of emotion in his 13 years with the team, and has delivered some results in big games, he has never been a passenger. If anyone wants to say he plays a soft game, I'd agree with them. He could have been a bully physically if he wanted, and he certainly could've been more physical in general. But he does not deserve to be made a scapegoat of something is probably not even guilty of himself. The team might be better moving on from him at this point or in a year or two, but if you're going to say even if he "comes back as an all star" that he's somehow a problem, that's extreme.
100% agree. The issue in the fall was mutiny, not country club. Neither is good but I'm surprised more posters don't realize there is a clear distinction.

Dear Mr Chris Drury (aka White Garlic Knot, Chubby Pitcher),

Please consider My deadline plan.

- Smith at 50% to VGK for a 2nd and Kmec
- Krieder / Ruhwedel / 6 to CLB for a 1st/4th/Del Bel Belluz
- Domingue for a 5th
- Jones/Kmec/Kunin retention for Walman

CLB prob on CKs no trade list but could be another partner out there.

Thank you Chubby

Nothing too groundbreaking. reiterated the Rangers will trade Kreider if they get a good enough offer but it will most likely be draft picks and futures. Also Drury is looking for a left D.

I enjoyed this regarding the Rempe/Wilson jawing:

“He was yelling at me, ‘Don’t hit Ovie! Don’t do that to Ovie! Don’t hit Ovie!’ ” Rempe told The Post after the match had ended with a 3-2 overtime defeat to the Caps. “I told him I’d hit anyone I want.” Love this kid.
Awesome. Ty.

I am over the Panarin nonsense from dummies last year. Either you have a poor understanding of what the word disappear means or you have a poor understanding of what the word playoffs means. The Florida series didn’t constitute the entirety of the playoffs. Bread had 15 points in 16 games and was very good against a tough Carolina team in round 2.

Miller had 12 in 13 games, so I suppose he disappeared too, but maybe your math is as good as your vocabulary.

Back to what actually matters in this discussion. Ottawa made the playoffs the year right before BT’s rookie year.

He has never made the playoffs. 6 going on 7 seasons.

I don’t give a damn how disappointing you think a player’s playoffs are…if you are actually in them and all you have done is scratched the ice with your blades it’s a better playoff track record than BT so far.

Let me explain this to you in crayons.

If you want to bone the prom queen you have to attend prom. And getting a slow dance with her is at least better than being at home in your Spongebob jammies eating Cheetos.

Don’t like that analogy?

When you go to the zoo you aren’t guaranteed to see the Siberian Tigers as they may be lounging behind a big rock , but there is a chance they may be active because you GOT TO THE DAMN ZOO. And you also probably got to see some giraffes and monkeys and shit (playoff series wins) and a good time was had. But if you don’t go to the f***ing zoo you ain’t seeing a damn animal in your basement unless your jammies have zebras or rhinos on them.

My left nut may be a great playoff performer but we will never know as it hasn’t made the playoffs in 6.5 years and neither has BT.
Why did you needlessly disparage your right nut?

I'd like to make the playoffs this year, just for the heck of it and to get our younger guys more experience, hand over the 1st to Vancouver, and move on.

But I really don't see us as a contender. Sure, you never know once you're in there, but I don't see it.

I just don't want Drury to do anything stupid before Friday. Unload the expiring contracts as much as possible, put some feelers out for an LD upgrade, and call it a day.
We shouldn't expect Drury to do anything stupid - during last year's run / challenge for President Trophy he barely made any moves. The only unwarranted TDL move he made during his tenure as GM was bringing Kane - which reasonably easily could be assigned to Dolan pushing for it.

Why does everyone say Ferraro sucks? How many of you actually watch him enough to know that? Just curious, not being curt but I notice all of you saying he sucks

In all honesty, this would be the reason.

He's very similar to Lindgren in my viewings of him. Not a particularly good skater, not very large. 0 offense. feels like a guy who has played major minutes for a bottom feeder out of necessity but people see the 20 next to his TOI and think he's doing yeoman work. He's only 26 too. Why would SJS be looking to trade him if he's a difference maker, ya know?

I would absolutely be open to moving Laf right now. If he were snake bitten or unlucky I may feel differently, but he isn’t showing anything that indicates he’s got a rebound coming next year, which means there is a very good chance his value will begin to decrease.
How about what he did last season? If it's not an indication that he can rebound I don't know what is - so your starting conclusion that his value would continue to decline is not 100% solid

Similar to Lindgren tracks with the analytics.

so is Smith going today or what?
I wonder if they are waiting for some more moves to be made to drive the value up on teams that lose out on the edge forwards and/or Ratanen & Nelson.

Something tells me Drury isnt going to budge until he gets what he's looking for.

Smith is ranked by the Athletic as the 6th best forward available and his contract can be split again (1.875 aav?) which makes him a more attractive add.

Im interested in Rantanen if the Canes are dealing him. Need size and finishing in our top 6.

Drury should ask about Alex Tuch again too. Shift trocheck to 3C and Mika back to the middle. A RW with size and team control would be huge. Id be willing to move Schneider for him.

I’m not sure what this means either. If you mean Zib, CK, Bread are entitled because they get all the PP time etc., one could say they deserved it by their play over the past 3 years. Many teams put their best players on special teams. I agree that the kids should have had more responsibility in retrospect, but it is what it is. The coach makes those decisions not the players, therefore calling the players entitled and country clubbers is quite odd. As for the carnage and drama, that is all on Drury, and no one else.
I think you would be surprised what happens within NHL teams. Coach player dynamics today are much different than even 10 years ago. The pendulum shifted too far in One direction with nyr, why do you think there was such a war over the last 6 months within the organization? It's still not finished either fyi

Laviolette isnt getting fired, especially if we make the playoffs. If he was going to be shitcanned it wouldve happened months ago.
If it happened months ago it would have signaled victory to the players on their mutiny. He was never getting fired during that and I told you that back in November before everything became public

If Rantanen gets traded that has LA all
Over it.
Wonder if fiala would get it done. He signed with term and the kings have been very up and down on him but that term might be viewed as a positive for the hurricanes. Any move that they make with Miko is going to be graded against what they gave up to get him in the first place

I would absolutely be open to moving Laf right now. If he were snake bitten or unlucky I may feel differently, but he isn’t showing anything that indicates he’s got a rebound coming next year, which means there is a very good chance his value will begin to decrease. Right now he’s still shortly enough removed from last season’s success and has the 1OA shine still after finally having a good season. Jettisoning him before other teams catch on that he was a product of a 120pt aeason from Artemi is probably the highest we’re going to be able to sell on him. If, for instance, Brady tells Ottawa he isn’t going to re-sign and wants to go to an American team, there isn’t a single argument that a single poster alive is capable of making that would stop me from ADDING to Laf (substantially, to be honest) to get that deal done. Let’s say Fox and Cuylle are just about the only things I wouldn’t be willing to include. Laf + KAM or Schneider? Laf + Otthman? Kreider (not happening with NTC, but still). Yes, I would trade Laf in a heart beat. Laf + Schneider - give me Pinto while we’re at it. Laf is symbolic of the country club problems we talk about, in my mind. I’ve never seen a player accomplish so little and look SO comfortable and content.

Games like tonight drive home to me how badly we still need top end talent. Panarin isn’t it. Even if he were playing like Panarin of last year, he’s not enough by himself. Winger Zib has been way better, but he’s not high end enough. Miller, Trochek, Cuylle are solid but they’re meat and potatoes. We need another garlic butter sauce to elevate the dish from ordinary to amazing. Otthman, Berard, Edstrom, Rempe, Carrick, Parsinen, Kreider if he stays, are all meat and potatoes. There’s gonna be enough of that up and down the lineup. We need another spice. A Nylander type. A Necas. Someone creative with high end vision who can identify and make the pass no one else can even see.

For clarity - my Tkachuk thoughts regarding Laf are not related to my thoughts about the overall makeup of the roster. Tkachuk has skill and would be a massive asset because he brings something we don’t have, but he would still fall into the meat and potatoes group. You’d have to move Laf, Kreider, Otthman (for example) and still add someone with some flavor to the group. Doesn’t have to even necessarily be a star. It could be a complimentary guy like Ehlers. Teravainen before he fell off. Those types.
Fox laffy for dahlin cozens.

Won't happen but damn that would be great

Jared McCann. Is he actually good or just a PP merchant on a bad team? Drury loves to deal with Seattle and Oleksiak has also been linked to us. Clearly they are open for business after the big trade with TB yesterday.

It’s going to be a loss almost guaranteed.

At this point they should just keep him. Their time is now and he’s better than anything they’ll get back. I know they booted away a ton for what would be a rental but that’s the risk they were running with out having an extension in place.

Don't disagree but I will be shocked if they let him walk. Maybe they will if they can deal his rights before UFA to get something back after the run
