Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

Drury is likely to be a buyer once the Reilly Smith deal happens. I want Kreider gone but it seems unlikely (reverse mush in effect)
Kreider has two more years left.

I think he has the potential to return a lot more during a bounce back year than he does now when he's a corpse.

He's only gonna "buy" guys with term. I think he's liable to let the good energy with the kids ride, though.

On balance they're gonna sell more than they buy, pretty sure.

You think about it as a negative whereas it's the opposite for NHL - it is by design that they wanted repeated series in earlier rounds to have rivalries to drive viewership (and then novelty would "take over" in Conference finals and SCF).
Yeah, and I think the NHL is wrong. I don't think there's much interest in watching rivals play each other over and over and over again.

Rangers arent going to trade him if he bounces back, We've also discussed how he is blocking opportunities for young players. I think the die is cast with kreider, just depends on when. The best outcome for us is that he puts on his big boy pants and performs like a team player down the stretch and in the playoffs. Then everyone looks at it with a cooler head in the summer.

They literally have nothing else to sell beyond smith. they already took advantage of the market in the Lindgren trade. Othmann, jones, some of the picks they've reacquired should be on the table for multi year solutions.

That's literally what he will do.

Doubtful. Nothing he has done this year signals that is part of his strategy. He's been on the hunt for controllable players since this roster purge started in December.

We she'll see, but teams aren't normally selling RFAs and players with term at the deadline, unless they are terrible or they know they won't afford them.

Who fits Drurys MO?

Probably Walman? Definitely not Provorov.

Dark horse, Mason Lorhei

The NHL is stagnant. It doesn't appeal to anybody that's not already into it.

I hope, that if the cap goes up the way they're projecting, that could change, but it's just a boring league right now.

That the at-large viewing audience wanted extreme parity is another thing they miscalculated. Look at the viewship for the Superbowl and for soccer leagues around the world. People can say whatever they want about hating 2 or 3 great teams at the top but that's what they tune in to watch.

The Four Nations was a huge hit, but if you bring in somebody new from that, who is now watching the NHL, and they were exposed to 4N rosters, they're gonna hate it when they're watching Alexis Lafreniere, Tomas Tatar, and Alaiksei Protas on teams' top lines.
They need some big stars in big markets

Expansion needs to be on hold. It’s working in as it’s bringing in revenue and more fans but as mentioned, the quality has fallen off.

He's insane if he becomes a buyer. Team isn't going anywhere in the playoffs. If we even make it.
Depends on what he buys. If he's shopping for rental to improve the roster for the short term, that's asinine.

However, if he trades for skilled guys with term while removing Kreider or a pipedream like Zib or Panarin that's a huge boost for next season & beyond.

The 1-8 matchups as of today:

NYR v WSH (it's just unstoppable no matter what system you use :shakehead)
CBJ v TOR
NJD v FLA
CAR v TB

CGY v WPG
LAK v DAL
COL v VGK
EDM v MIN

The West would be completely fresh and it would spare us EDM v LAK for the 97th year in a row. The East would have two pretty good, pretty new matchups. And Toronto would get somebody they might beat!
Was just talking to someone about this.

The other important thing is the lack of reseeding after the first round.

Its so stupid to me that after an 82 game season a Conference and/or Presidents Trophy winning team is potentially rewarded by being matched against the 2nd best team in the same conference in round 2 of the playoffs, while the other division basically has a play in series to see who goes against the remaining beast.

All because they want to "maintain rivals". Its dumb. If those two rivals are good enough theyll meet in the conf final in more an of epic war to see who plays for the Cup.

There is a gargantuan gap of logic you are making. Not making the playoffs at all vs winning a Cup. No, McDavid doesn’t suck because he hasn’t won a Cup, but he routinely makes the playoffs and has been a whisker away from winning it. Until Tkachuk actually tastes a playoff game let alone a conference final you all can miss me with Tkachuk being a better player than Bread.

I don’t think BT sucks anyway. I just don’t understand the lust for him based on…what exactly. Zero post-season appearances. 6, probably 7 years missing the playoffs.
Again, it’s a TEAM that makes the playoffs. The sens have sucked pretty much forever. Like I said before Tkachuk is exactly what you want on your team come playoff time. Everyone, myself included, complained how Panarin disappeared last year in the playoffs. A guy that plays Tkachuks style of game doesn’t disappear and drags the other guys into the game. Tkachuk and JT Miller types are playoff players.
