Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

I'm betting we see more than just a Smith move from us

Blue Jackets and Detroit are going to be very interesting to watch - nothing there for the Rangers to swap with, but those teams have been on the outside looking in for a long while, you know those owners are hounding for some playoff revenue

The incompetence of the Islanders is monstrously amusing

Kreider for Bichsel

he’s just small. He’s just not big enough to move people or to find success on the boards consistently.

In a playoff series against a heavy team it will be a detriment

We had Fox and Lindgren this whole time. Having jones in the lineup made us really undersized. Maybe it can work a little better now but I still see Drury and co moving him

I don't think that is as much height as it is strength /build. I doubt Drury cares about 1 inch. He should be able to add a little weight /muscle.

Oilers way overpaid for Frédéric who probably won't even play until playoffs.....if he plays.

That trade is terrible and probably only gets beat out by Jeannot going for a whole draft class recently.

Oilers are desperate to make a run which bodes well for Mcd to test FA.
so Oilers are desperate to win and thats going to make McDavid test free agency?

I don't want Drury to make a move just to make one, but he's been wheeling and dealing all year my gut feels like he shouldn't stop now. There's no reason why the Rangers cannot make a run. If the Panarin-Trocheck-Lafreniere line can return to form, we have as good a shot as any team.

Y'all remember how Grier just took Goodrow of the waivers, and some people thought that Drury might be owing him a favour later on?

We could just about do it as it currently stands with the salary cap. And obviously the Rangers would get some compensation.

Compensation = Barkley Goodrow?

reilly smith returning a 2nd rounder+ is an absolute pipe dream
It is entirely normal to dream of pipes

Letting a new core get playoff games together, compete down the stretch, etc. has value to future years

Panarin @ 50% for Clarke and Turcotte. maybe + pick?

Make room for Gabe and fill needs. Leaves a major hole until Gabe acclimates to the NHL but it's not like Panarin lights up the playoffs. Kreider takes his spot once 'healthy'.

Cuylle JTM Zibs
Othmann Tro Laffy
Kreider Parsnip Berard
Turcotte Carrick Rempe

Schneider Fox
KAM Borgen
Vaak Clarke

In regards to Smith -

Hes 20 months removed from winning a Cup, he’s a versatile 2-way forward who can play up and down the forward lines and they’ll be several teams in on him.

I think the conversation starts with a 2nd.

Philly playing chicken with teams that they are asking the moon from

Wouldn’t touch Laughton with a 20 foot pole held by an Ebola patient

Smith at us retaining 50% of his remaining cap brings him under 2m.

Id say low first or B+ prospect.

Theres a lot more contending teams right now, and the few bad ones don’t have a ton of rental pieces.

Buffalo has pieces to move but they’re all long term deals that are best made over the summer.

Ottawa is chasing a spot
Mkt is chasing a spot
Utah is chasing a spot
Detroit is currently holding a spot
Cbj is holding a spot

We can do better.
doubtful

Yeah, no one would be stupid enough to trade a 2nd rounder for Reilly Smith.
True and no one would be stupid enough to equate trading for Reilly Smith in division with retention in the offseason to a TDL acquisition

Wennberg got a 2nd (granted it was us) and Wennberg couldn’t score if he had an empty net with 10 attempts. Smith gets a 2nd easily.
Wennberg is a center

Based on what?

We gave up a 2nd and 5th to get him at 50%. We will retain 50%, which will lower his cap hit even further. His points this year are on par with what he scored last year, and there are more buyers than sellers.

Given the return we got in the Lindgren trade, what makes you think we'll get less for Smith than we paid for him?

I also do like @Fitzy idea of targeting Minnetian in a trade with Dallas.

Kid has some work to do but the raw tools are there to be a top 4 d. Skating and shot are very good.

Local kid from NJ as well, played for the Rockets & Bergen Catholic
