Speculation: Roster Building thread - Part XVII - (TDL is March 7th)

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Agreed but let’s say Edmonton offers you a 3rd and Ottawa offers you a 2nd and you are basically tied with Ottawa for the last playoff spot Drury probably deals with Edmonton.

That’s just foolish to me. Take the best offer. We are sellling and smith isn’t a part of the core that’s currently trying to get us in. Having or not having smith isn’t going to change anything.

You take the 2nd all day, the difference in those 31 picks between is the difference between getting your man or not in the draft.

Its asset management 101

It's becoming a little funny/ironic constantly reading "find someone to play with fox" the same way reading "find a rw for Mika and kreider" for years. It was constantly the fault of all the right wingers until people finally accepted the twins were the issue. Now the team is better without kreider (on and off ice) and mika's role has shifted as a catalyst to some success.

Interesting to see some of the core that has been an issue finally be out of the lineup and just a different vibe around the team.

Except... Fox isn't playing badly.

It's actually a sellers market. There are not many sellers. Some of these teams don't want rentals. Some of these teams want to make the playoffs. Montreal doesn't need anymore picks. They will keep Evans and Armia. The Blues are winning. They have been mentioned in every trade rumor. Maybe they keep Schenn.

Drury should keep selling. Smith. Kreider should go. It will be difficult to trade both Kreider and Panarin in the same offseason. These trades are so hard to make.

Some teams like Buffalo don't want futures. All of these teams want Tuch with one season remaining on his contract. All of these teams want Cozens. The Sabres don't want a first round pick or a prospect. They want NHL caliber players.

Columbus has Provorov. Making the playoffs will be so huge for them.

Except... Fox isn't playing badly.

If the Rangers can somehow make a hockey trade with Adam Fox, they need to do it at the draft. His lack of speed and skating is concerning, especially as he ages ans the NHL is getting faster year after year. His contact and bad skating is going to be a big liability

Be careful because the Fox mafia will come after you.

People defend Fox by blaming his lack of a D partner. I don't know about that. An elite level player should be able to raise the level of play of everyone around him. It's the opposite with Fox. The Rangers need to find the right partner for him. He has be good defensively. He has to be a very good skater. He has to be a physical player. Anything else?

Gavrikov is staying in LA.

Chychrun is not that player. Besides, he will hit the lottery this summer and the team will regret that contract on July 2.

The Rangers have played three games without Fox this week. They have not missed Fox at all. They haven't missed his buddy either.

Thanks Confucius. “Eye test” is part of the problem.
Those numbers are skewed.

As many of us predicted, the issues in the defense corps don't look nearly as bad without Lindgren here. I dont see the Rangers trading for another defenseman this deadline unless there is too good of an offer to pass up.

I think now, the key move to make would be adding a center like McLeod or Novak. Both guys are on the younger side, under team control. They play with speed and have good shots off the rush. I havent disliked what I've seen from Othmann so far, but he'd be a trade chip for me given how effective Rempe, Edstrom and Berard have looked at the NHL level. Cuylle too has passed him on the depth chart and looks like a bonafide top 6 player. There's only so many spots at wing.

Can someone explain the Chris Kreider situation to me? Longest tenured ranger who has been part of some great ranger teams. Has had big moments in the playoffs and seems well liked by teammates. He never seemed to be a locker room problem or distraction. He’s turned himself into an all ranger.

With all that said, it was always weird to me that he never got consideration for team captain. I also know he’s has a down year this year, but it seems like a lot of people on these boards have turned on him and are eluding to him being a major issue in the locker room. Is there something that I missed? Can someone explain to me where this stuff is coming from on Kreider.
Always been a great guy and teammate. Id advise ignoring internet nonsense. He has played through a back issue so he has looked like he isn't trying. He didn't all of a sudden become a bad guy or a guy trying to drag the team down.

There’s a reason older fans loved Beaukeboom. Leetch is the best defenseman this franchise has ever seen, but Beaukeboom was a huge contributor to his success. I know he had the familiarity with Lindgren, but let’s be honest, the they should’ve gotten him a higher caliber defensive partner years ago. LHD has been an organizational weakness for a few years now.

I’m not against trading Fox in the right deal, and maybe it’s time for a change of scenery for both parties, but I’m not automatically driving him to the airport after 1 down year. This franchise waited a long time for a defenseman with his skillset. There was a long stretch of time that the Power Play was total dog shit. I remember us making jokes here about how the Rangers should decline the penalties because the Power Play would kill their momentum. Fox changed that.

If Fox doesn't "raise the level of play of everyone around him" then explain to me why since last year, in ~1500 minutes with Fox and ~430 minutes without Fox, Lindgren put up 55.5% GF% and 47.9 xG% with Fox but only 43.2% GF% and 41% xG% without Fox.

We *HAD* someone to play with Fox. When they were together we had one of the best D Pairs in the league. But then our coach broke up that pair so that he could put the Lindgren anchor back on Fox, and reunite the Miller-Trouba disaster. Maybe if that pair hadn't been broken up we would be in a better spot in the standings right now.

Kind of feels like all roads lead to the Rangers overpaying a guy like Orlov or Provorov (or Ekblad which would be such a Rongo move) this summer in FA.

Provorov is going to price himself out of Columbus and has already turned down some extension offers. Canes are going to let Orlov walk. It’ll be partially true that it’s because they have the ELC guys to replace him, but Orlov has been terrible this year. Seen him a bunch live and he has been sticking out like a sore thumb in a bad way. Didn’t really look in great shape this season either. They have to do something but don’t really have a clue what the move is. Unless they can find a trade the options are going to be slim/there aren’t going to be a ton of tradable assets

There is a big American defenseman who is likely to hit UFA and is having a big season.

We know where this one is going if he hits the market. He may not want to come here, but it's not going to be for a lack of effort.

I don’t think he’s hitting the market. Actually think it would kind of insane for him to leave, and I’d definitely be worried about taking him out of that ecosystem

Chychrun?

Yup.

I don't think it's an ecosystem thing at all. Whether or not its a good idea is a different question entirely at what ever price point he's going to come in at.

Then theres also the fact that both he (along with the rest of the caps) have low key been pretty ass for 2+ months now. It's a clear target and Drury loves his Americans.

I don't think Provorov or Orlov will be on their radar. Ekblad would have been predictable if he were LH.

Right now it sure is, Drury is smart to get ahead, get rid of Smith soon. Kreider's "injury" will prevent him from being traded, he'll be back the first game after the deadline though.

The closer we get to the deadline time at 3PM, the quicker is becomes a buyers market. Lets not wait till the last second and get screwed.

If a team would take on all of Kreider’s contract it wouldn’t take much for me to move him
doing this unreservedly without considering the return would be foolish

Agreed but lets say Edmonton offers you a 3rd and Ottawa offers you a 2nd and you are basically tied with Ottawa for the last playoff spot Drury probably deals with Edmonton.
take the 2nd, big picture, not win now = 99% + of time = epic fail

Yeah its feeling like the best return on the trade will be that kreider is no longer here.

I cant wait for this day.

If kreider isnt traded, just shut him down for season. No need for him to ever don the jersey again.

Mika looking so much better that he isnt playing with him.
1. John Lennon quote: "you don't know what ya got/until you lose it"
you have a right to your opinion, that said, blind hate for a legit injured player, esp one who has given so much to this club and is so beaten up b'c he is the only one stud enuf to hang out in front of the net on pp [Rempe just got here],
that is just wack and hate

2. Mika = no heart, no d
repurpose HIM for futures WHICH WE NEED after recent spate of stupid rentals

I find it humorous that they’ve won two games in a row and that’s enough of a sample for some to be like “yup, that settles it, the team is better without their Norris defensemen”

the jokes write themselves at this point

It’s going to be like Schneider to LD and sign Ekblad. I do not condone this

Ive also noticed how the "Fox Mafia" they talk about, never brings up Fox. The majority of the board would love to talk about something else for once, I'm sure.
