Speculation: Roster Building thread - Part XVII - (TDL is March 7th)

That's fine, but Edstrom played a vital role in the bottom of the lineup. There is a reason that Vesey, Kaliyev, and Rempe got scratched and he didn't.

He started 3 out of every 4 faceoffs in the neutral zone or defensive zone. Edstrom wasn't someone that was supposed to put up points and hasn't been put in those positions to do so.

Edstrom was one of the fastest players on the team and played a physical style. Would have loved to see him get PK time, but that is the next step in his development.

There's such a stench. The brand of hockey sucks and everyone ends up playing it. Who's coming here that doesn't get sucked right into it?

You can't get rid of every player at the same time.

The coach isn't helping but I'm not sure how much another new one helps.

Drury isn't doing enough and I don't think he's that interested in anything that's not staying on the track.

Gorton was the worst GM in history. This is his project come to fruition. The first two words out of his mouth were character and speed and he left us with this featureless, slow ass team.

i'm gonna defend Gorton for a second. the team he left us with at the end of 20-21 was a fine base of young players, the "rebuild" wasn't really done yet. the team had major holes for sure, but the fact that the core of his team made two deep playoff runs isn't nothing. i'm probably alone in thinking that the Panarin signing was a great move because how often can you get an all-world player for nothing? and he was REALLY f***ing good. coveting Trouba was a mistake but he was actually pretty good the first 3 seasons he was here. the biggest problem is that the players we got with our high draft picks were/are garbage. if Kakko and Lafreniere weren't complete f***ing busts we would be in such a different situation, maybe they even win the cup last year. still then, Drury got the helms and immediately traded skill (Buchnevich) and threw money at 'toughness and grit' (Goodrow). gave Mika a stupid extension. never addressed the major issues on defense. on top of two bust draft picks we went from a very mediocre GM to a much worse one right as the team was supposed to be in their window. every single move Drury made resulted in a worse roster, except for maybe the Andrew Copp trade (still lost a 1st round pick). and this stupid team still got to game 6 of the ECF twice. a couple of different moves here and there and they could've won the cup.

Playoff Panarin does this? That Panarin is a mythical creature last seen in 2019 round 1 for CBJ vs Tampa never to be seen again.

I agree with most of what you said. I like him. I guess “difference maker” and “vital role” were just a bit much for me.

Yeah, that's what I meant by "complete" - ie... absolute NMC's shouldn't be a thing anymore. Partial NTC's etc... with some player control, sure. Complete NMC's for years, etc... - they need to figure something else out - even if it starts with just limiting the term to 2-3 years max or whatever.

Panarin had 4 game winning goals in the last playoff run. He scored the clinching goal in 4 out of their 10 wins.

Gaborik went to a team where he wasn't the guy. I don't think Panarin is ever carrying a team the way we needed him to carry us. That's a roster issue.

It tends to be true in general. Nobody on the Panthers was particularly spectacular. You win as a team.

But we're talking about trading him to a team like the Panthers where he doesn't have to be the guy.

The year before Tkachuck was and I'll give Bob a nod last year.

The problem with Panarin is that we only have one and suck at even strength. Pretty easy to figure out who to key on.

I don't think anyone's 'ideas are wrong but it would be nice to be methodical in the changes they are making. By that I mean that it would be nice to see the team with Othmann and Berard playing meaningful minutes, Smith, Lindgren, Vesey and Panarin gone and re-assess from there as they move in to the off-season. That's a lot of moving parts unto itself.

full concur, except rip the band aid off, one fell swoop, immediately, forget gradual limits
