Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

I'm tired of arguing why Panarin should stay (over Kreider and Zibanejad). Even after his ppg performance last year the goal-posts have shifted to "well ppg in playoffs doesn't matter - what matters is that it's xx% reduction from his 120 points regular season". There's whole a lot of other non-sense about Panarin - seems like he's running the team, not Drury with Laviolette.

Putting aside the argument of who from the old guard should stay or go, my question re. Panarin starts with what would his extension looks like and what else Drury would be able to get at forward for this money as Panarin's replacement. Would he sign for 3/4 years at $9m? For comparison looks like $9m would get you someone like Buchnevich or less (because his extension was signed before updated guidance on where the cap was moving). I'm personally not attached to any player if his replacement would make the TEAM better
At 11.6mil AAV, a 17% drop off in scoring from reg season to playoffs is not acceptable. He picked up a ppg while playing an uninspired non impactful perimeter game - the opposite of what you need in the playoffs. It’s absolutely valid to criticize him for it. If we reup him it better be at a discount. At 11mil? NO THANKS.
We’d ALL want Zib gone first looking at the last 18 months, but him being a trainwreck doesn’t excuse Panarin. Anyway, neither is gone before their deal is up unless they agree to it.

Well, I guess you hold it against him that this season he's unable to match his career best performance from last season? As I said I'm all for making the TEAM better and if it means replacing Panarin for cheaper and better performing option - I'm all for it.

Did you think Panarin was a difference maker in the playoffs last year?

Yeah a few more things to this.

- He wasn't at a ppg. We don't need to round up (you weren't doing it.)
- He was largely invisible for 2 of the 3 series they played last year. No one should forget that he went nearly 9 periods with out registering a SOG vs Washington.
- His PPG as a Ranger drops off by more than half a point a game from post season to playoffs. He's lead the team in scoring every single season he's been here, hes yet to do it in the playoffs a single time.
- His best run (last year) still saw him be the 3rd best player on his line.

He's the highest paid winger in the league who is straight up going from hart level (at his best) in the RS to.... okay complementary winger who goes into panic mode and becomes a turnover machine in the PS. I don't expect him to pace 120 points in the playoffs (No one does that unless they're the elite of the elite, he is not that) but what he's given this team in the playoffs hasn't even been close to acceptable.
Last year was better for the Carolina series alone (it was better overall) but that still wasn't close to enough.

It is a bit weird to be that Zibanejad gets plates of shit thrown at him while Panarin gets a free pass from a large portion of this fan base when the former has been a demonstrably better producer of offense in the playoffs than the latter (11 more points to be exact.)

Rather Brazeau than Frederic, even if he isnt a C. He'd be easier to extend based on Frederic's reputation alone. Faster and bigger. I worry about Frederic's skating and how players like him are consistently overpaid on the open market. His career high in points is the same as Kakko. I didnt want to pay Kakko either so saying I like Frederic just because he participates in more staged fights would be a bit disingenuous.

Brazeau is the crash the net bowling ball type. he's huge and difficult to move. he scores at the crease and can play netfront on PP2. Undervalued player we will be celebrating Drury for if he inquires and extends him at a fair price.

Berard-Edstrom-Brazeau 3rd line next year.
Id rather players who can skate better. We're too slow and our overall skating ability isn't that great. If you're worred about Frederic's skating, how are you ok with Brazeau? I'm done with players who would look better on their knees than on skates...

That sounded wrong...

Panarin is not taking a paycut. If he's willing to take a 3 year deal he will get many offers for 12+. 9 is fantasyland.

Wow! Is the majority here wanting Panarin gone? I mean, getting him, screwed up the full rebuild, now he has to finish what he started. That said, adding the likes of Berard, Othmann and Perreault seems a bit much all at one time next year, correct? Two, maybe. Not 3. Think Berard might be heading out in a per TDL.
Panarin has one more year after this. If we could get something amazing back for him you have to let him go. Wouldn't hold my breath tho.
I agree don't think bringing in all three prospects up this year is a good idea. Rushing GP should not happen.
Totally against losing Berard unless its part of a big return for a young center.

Because Ive watched Brazeau play and he can move plenty. The other aspect of his skating that I like is that he can skate through defenders due to his size.

He's a big body but doesn't really use this size that much unless he's protecting the puck or hard to move out of the way. I think his skating is atrocious. Berard-Edstrom-Brazeau sounds really bad for a 3rd line. I'm not sure Edstrom should even be on the 3rd line.

Are we talking 3rd line for the Pack or the Rangers? lol
