Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

We don't need him to be a difference maker but he's a top 4 LHD that we could sign to a team controlled RFA deal. He's at least 3x the player Lindgren is and his strength is moving the puck up ice and defending down low.

He's not a world beater but he'd be a competent partner for Fox.
I mean anyone is better than Lindgren, but I guess my last post was about the cost to acquire him. If we're not sending out anything valuable, I wouldn't be against it. However, I don't think Byram is a guy who's going to be a top 4 on a Cup winner. If we're getting him, I'd feel better if we planned to play him on the 3rd pair, honestly.

Feel like Byram is just a repeat of the Filip Chytil dilemma. I’m certainly not trading Schneider+ for him like that Barstool guy suggested

He already did this. He’s a very good player and fits our timeline perfectly. The only question is the head injuries.

BTW, this situation with Edstrom's is why it is totally prudent to keep Vesey who's perfectly fine to be 12-14 forward based on him contribution / cap cost instead of trying to offload him for measly 5th round pick or whatever
Keep him for what, though? Are we winning a cup this year? Are we even making the playoffs?

Vesey's contract is up, and he turns 32 in May. Are we going to re-sign him?

I have no idea what we'd get for him. Maybe nothing. But if we can get something, we should. There are plenty of players out there just like him that we can sign on the cheap. Or, maybe, we promote from within. Maybe one of Chmelar or Roobroeck make the team.

That was on a stacked team & he only moved up to the 2nd pair halfway through the playoffs when Girard got knocked out for the duration.

Again, I'm not against it, I just don't think he's going to get any better at this point. The Avs gave up on him for a reason.

That looks like a mistake by the Avs. They are already out on Middlestadt and looking for a left defenseman. Byram was a 4 OA who has shown upside before. If you pair him with Fox and he manages to stay healthy its a very high reward move. The injuries are what worry me. All depends on return but I'm not trading a big prospect or roster player for him, unless it's Lindgren. Lindy would've fought Noesen at least

If we happen to fall complete out of it I would hope to see Berard, Othmann and even Sykora plenty down the stretch. Vesey can be on his way with the other rentals.

The Rangers are currently still in it and therefore I assume are not giving up on the season just yet.

I know not entirely his fault but another guy that has regressed. Scored some big goals last year 4 GWG and 13 total none on pp I believe.

Bunch of rumors circling around Zegras now, hmm wonder if we finally bring him home especially now that Zibanejad has moved to RW. We could have Zegras as 2C and use Trocheck in more of a shutdown role

Panarin - Miller - Zibanejad
Kreider - Zegras - Lafreniere
Cuylle - Trocheck - Smith
Vesey - Carrick - Rempe

Though I'm sure most people would rather solve the LD issue first

I noticed this
not sure his current injury status
if the price is reasonable/reasonable+ but something we can swallow depending on the currency, we should seriously consider, even if this is more of a setup build move for next yr

if only we could get zib to waive for ana now

Gabe, Lindgren+

Zegras and Mintyukov

I'm just waiting for Josi and Ryan O'Reilly to ask out of Nashville. No way we could afford both,, but there would be your filled out lineup.

Get Josi and RoR with Retention on the latter. Ship out Mika in the offseason to open up that space again.

But that would be some lineup.

Edit: shocked to see Josi is 34 years old lol. But he can still bring it.

Drury has been methodical in his moves to improve the roster. Trouba gone, Vaak in. Kakko gone, Borgen and picks in. Chytil gone, Miller in.

The team is in a unique spot where they’re trying to battle their way back in to a playoff spot. Even if Drury agreed with most of us here that state moving Smith and Vesey would be good business he should wait until closer to the deadline unless some crazy offer comes in. Let Berard and Othmann continue getting big minutes in the AHL and marinate as long as you can and it’s cheap insurance in case of another major injury. There’s really no rush.

For example, what happens if Cuylle gets hurt and Othmann gets hurt in the AHL? With Edstrom out, we all of a sudden may want to hold on to Smith or Vesey if the team is in a playoff spot at the deadline.

That’s just one example.

The move in most intrigued to see whether it happens or not is Lindgren. There is clearly no internal replacement for him at the NHL level right now. Will one of the teams hovering around contention fall out of it and have a serviceable veteran LD who could be had for very little, thus opening up the opportunity to trade Lindgren? The Rangers don’t have major assets to send somewhere in exchange for a rental and nor should they. I truly think that the LD addition is best made in the offseason via UFA. Chychrun, Gavrikov, Provorov, Orlov.

I’m starting to get anxious waiting for Lindgren move and have a feeling that it will be a joint move together with Kreider.
