Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

While we’re certainly going for the playoffs this year, the miller trade is aimed at overall change, not the playoffs this year.

I hope this the truth. It appears so, but none of us outside closed doors knows for certain.

I stand by my opinion that Alain Vignault ruined the meritocracy and respect for the Org, Torts and Renney(Jagr) established.

Why is it a good thing he is signed for 5 more years? He’s already shown signs of declining this season, and starts next season at age 32.
Because he’s locked in on a rate under the old cap, meaning if he regresses even a little to a 70 point guy that cap hit is fair market.

Everyone is declining according to this board

It's pretty odd that Miller showed signs of declining in 18-19, 20-21 and 22-23 and then each season after put up around 2.5 pts/60. It's almost like it's just variance.

Its wild that it would legitimately better for the Rangers long-term to make the playoffs and give up the pick this year. That kind of thing almost never happens

Alright so my thoughts are, top guys are older now so theres no, “eh it makes no sense to be active at the TDL this year”. The window is closing fast.

IMO we gotta go for it these next 2 years.

To me that means building a playoff roster.

The #1 move id be making is establishing an absolute heater of a checking line and seeing if the flyers would be willing to part with Hathaway for something like Adam Sykora.

Panarin-JT-Laff
Kreider-Mika-Smith
Cuylle-Trocheck-Hathaway
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

I just have zero confidence in that Mika line and Im not sure what we should do there

Throw Rempe out with him for a few shifts....keep us entertained .

Not joking when I say JT is the type of on-ice leader I want for Rempe. Remps taking the lead from a veteran who can tell him when to reel it in. Even if Trocheck does it more vocally now, he's legitimized by Miller being here.

Who goes out the door next from our NHL roster ? My money is on Smith .

Vesey or Jones easily

So where does JT commonly play on a PP?
C?
If so Trotchek can bump down
They likely want Zib still on it let’s be real

Also can we move on from Vesey for whatever pick at this point ?
He wants out then see ya

The boys will be stoked to play today and this is also a HUGE game for the Bruins . Frederic-Marchand-Zadorov will all be at their finest greaseball levels . I think we see some scrapping today . Actually....I think we see a lot of scrapping in this one . I just have that feeling .....

To me, the protection details around that first rounder is all you need to know regarding how Drury and co. are assessing this team.

They are admitting this team has fundamental flaws and even JT may not be enough to turn it around. The core has major warts and this is likely just another attempt to fix it with more moves likely to come.

But it also serves the purpose of putting some juice back into the garden, putting more fannies in the seats and taking a shot at a potential playoff gate.

It’s the second part of the conditions (no protection in 26) that worry me the most and it’s more of the same overconfidence and smugness we saw from Sather in his two decades with the club.

They actually believe they will do enough at the deadline and/or summer to turn this around and become a top team again. Whether it happens or not doesn’t matter it’s that same old thought process that has mired this team forever and it will never change. They can’t see beyond their own noses.

If you think using the best offensive defensemen as your definitive answer is fair and valid there's nothing I can do for you. And your continued use of "softer" is bullshit anyway. Why don't we call them More accurate and less accurate?
My original post was discussing a harder or softer shot. I never mentioned more accurate or less accurate. Ray Bourque shot very hard. Rays hard shot never meant he had to be inaccurate. Nobody is telling guys to shoot softer by design imo. Cale shoot hard. JT shoots hard. Those hard shots are weapons not liabilities.

I care because I follow the draft more closely than most folks on here, and as I've been saying it's an 8 player draft. The condition makes me worry the Rangers feel differently
I think Top 13 just means they wanted it lottery protected. Don’t think there is a ton for difference between Top 8 and Top 13

I’m staying away from Hathaway. Don’t think the Flyers are trying to do that.

You know if I squint. I think they can make a play to get Marchand out of Boston. That would be fun

You should consider the fact that an unprotected pick is much less valuable now than it was a few years ago given the current lottery rules where you can't move up more than 10 spots, nobody outside of the top 11 can get the 1st pick, and they only lotto off picks 1-2 instead of 1-2-3.

The sequence of events that would require giving up a top 5 pick next year is incredibly unlikely since it basically would mean making (or just bubbling out on) the playoffs this year, and then either completely falling apart to becoming a bottom 5 team or once again being a bubble team and hitting like a 2% chance to move up,

I think you are reading too much into that. I think they just really wanted Miller. And they needed to offer something decent to make it happen.

Good. The Rangers are a better team when they play that way. And they have the horses to do it now. Hopefully JT brings out that side in the top 6. I also wonder if he has history with Zadarov. Former teammates and opponents in the Western Canada.

I would consider JT at the point on PP1. He has a blast.

by the way, Rutherford is an atrocious GM.

Like I think Drury is bad, but trading a potentially unprotected first round pick for what could amount to 30 games of Marcus Pettersson is insanity
Good thing Rutherford is not the GM of the Canucks then. Patrik Allvin is.
