Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Miller is better than Chytil and isn’t one concussion away from (REDACTED) Mancini is good but was replaceable. VAN wanted Schneider and wound up with Mancini.

You just kind of have to do it

Based on what exactly? Old core gets another year older, now they have no cap flexibility and moved on from a 1st and a young prospect. There’s a good likelihood they won’t be any better.
Right, unless they fluke into another 2023-24, it’s hard to see the light. They shed a bad contract and then proceeded to light the money on fire along with shedding future assets. They should be shedding old contracts and adding draft capital, they’re doing the opposite. It’s shades of late 90s, early 2000s, hard to watch this slow sinking ship.

Im willing to bet a very large sum of money they finish better in the standings next year. Drury is clearly not done. They will make more moves. Mika and/or Kreider gone this summer. Chytil to Miller is net +3.5m to the cap….AND the cap is going up 7.5m next year - his contract is a not an issue at all.

I don’t hate this trade. What I’m trying to figure out is what would our lines look like now at forward?

And is Miller going to play Center or wing? I think he kind of needs to play center because if he plays wing we don’t exactly have any good center for 3rd line…

So any guesses on lines?
Stick Cuylle and Laf on his wings and make Laf play north/south hockey. Time to purge the Breadman Globetrotter hockey out of him.

Value I give this a B- for the Rangers. On its face seems like a borderline steal, but ALL of the risk is on the NYR side. (1) Highly doubt Miller sniffs anywhere near his past production here likely a 75-85 point guy, (2) if Chytil stays healthy (big if) it is not hard to envision he is a better overall player than Miller 2-3 years from now and (3) there is a not insignificant chance the first round pick could end up being pretty high (if they shit the bed remainder of the year this year and then fall off again next year).

Strategy I give this a D-, Drury continues to underwhelm as a strategic thinker. This team is not a JT Miller away from seriously contending over the next few years given the remainder of the roster, I think that’s completely laughable - and 100% not this year with the current defense. Giving up young players and a first round pick that has the potential risk of being quite high value, for a player that has nowhere to go but down is just a foolish, shortsighted move.

Intangibles I give this an F. NY Rangers franchise drafting Miller 15th overall, giving him away for nothing, then trading the equivalent of 2 more first-round picks plus a good D prospect to bring him back at the least productive tail end of his career is an infuriating sequence of events to witness as a fan.

What how? It is going to be the team you are looking at but MAYBE without Zib. This team isn't very good at all.
Pretty simple. The locker room will be repaired which caused that entire mess in Nov/Dec, JT is miles better than Chytil + whatever UFA adds or other trades.

Surprisingly cheap trade. Drury must have learned how to strong arm a trade from when Ron Francis did it to him with Kakko. :naughty:

I recall Brannstrom having a decent start to this season. He must have cooled off and gotten sent down. Smallish D at 5'10" LHD. Probably sent for contract reasons? Seems redundant with Jones.

Don't know anything about Jackson Dorrington but he doesn't seem like a total throw away prospect.

So for lines maybe this:

Panarin - Trocheck - Lafreniere
Cuylle - Miller - Smith
Kreider - Zibanejad - Kaliev
Edstrom - Carrick - Rempe

Love the deal, chytil sucks losing but I dont wanna gamble with his health anymore, Mancini is likely blocked out with the Borgen deal, the 1st sucks but we got a top line player with some grit now

Big stretch thinking the locker room is going to be repaired with JT FING MILLER in there now. Dude is a known mess. And just you wait for when they disrespect LINDGREN. The room is going to melt into a puddle of Zima
