Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Wasn't Quinn basically that guy? Lots of people thought so when he was hired only to inevitably turn on him by year 2.

Who do you want to bring in and why will things be any different with that coach?

Quinn was never an authoritarian. he catered to everything the veteran players wanted and gave waiver claim Ryan Strome a bigger role after he told DQ to "shut up and trust the players" in the media. Another weakling like Gorton.

I would be sold on keeping Trocheck way quicker than I'd be sold on trading for JT Miller.
Yeah, I mean if Mika was going the other way... I'd likely be for it depending on the whole deal.
IF the cost isn't exorbitant and by some miracle VAN retains significantly, I'd have to consider it even without Mika, but I doubt that happens so I'm NOT rooting for that acquisition.

That fact that Rempe & Kreider are tied for assists this season is insane
Kreider has played 17:29 per game over 42GP and on PP1
Rempe has played 6:23 per game over 15GP
How is it even possible for Kreider to have so few assists?

Promote the 4th line
b'c zib eats ass so much he doesn't finish
ck 2-ish months wasted trying to prop him up

also @Mugless
Bread-Chytil-Cuylle
yes
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe
yes
Laf-Trocheck-Kaliyev
trade smith, Vesey
ltir Kreider
sit Zib until he breaks
4th line can be
Othmann - Brodz - Berrard

I want an actual systems coach. Someone who you know... coaches.

I'm done with the buddy buddy coaches. I want a coach who holds EVERYONE accountable. Even vets.

I'd love if Torts was here again.
This entire board turned on Torts and his 6-goalie system by the end.

Since winning the cup with Tampa in 2003-04, he has 1 season where his team made it to the 3rd round (2011-12 with the Rangers). I don't think he'll produce results with this group, and by the time we turn the roster over enough that we might be able to win, his act will get old again and we'll be looking for another coach.

He and Fox can look up at the rafters/scoreboard together!

Trocheck is a pain to play against and Laf plays with him. Shouldn't he be able to pick it up from Tro? I am not saying that Bread isn't possibly having a negative impact, but if he is then bringing in a hard nosed player probably won't solve the problem because there are some on the Rangers. The negative impact would be in another way.
Laf still hits more than any forward not named Cuylle, Trocheck, Carrick or Edstrom. (In his small sample, Rempe hits more frequently, and I'm sure that will continue). And I'd bet a good chunk of Laf's penalties are roughing, crosschecking, etc. He can play a nasty game. Before being with Pan, Laf was second only to Trocheck for hits among forwards, (of course Cuylle, Carrick and Ed weren't here). Year before last, Laf had 141 hits. He still is a pain to play against SOMETIMES. He needs to be that more consistently.

With the vets on how they lead, the young players better not follow that lazy entitlement that they have.

Here's what scares me deeply:

I think Chris Drury is Dolan's only hockey advisor. I think Dolan for the longest time had Sather, for better or worse (mostly worse, especially in the beginning), to be his personal hockey advisor. Then when Sather pulled back a bit it was JD, who ran "contrary" to what Dolan's vision of the team was, which was formented after the Tom Wilson incident. And then Drury cozied up to Dolan and got in his ear and got promoted and threw JD and Gorton under the bus.

And here we are with an incompetent, sneaky, unqualified used car salesman as our president and GM with no one to keep him in check. Ryan Martin? Spare me.

Who does Dolan consult now that Sather is gone? Adam Graves? Doubtful. Sean Avery? He probably takes Avery's opinions for a grain of salt. He knows Avery is off his rocker. I think it's just Drury and Dolan doesn't know (and doesn't really care) how awful Drury is. He has the keys to the kingdom and will have it for a long time.

And that's a terrifying thought.

You got short term memory loss or something? Didn’t you post this word for word like last night?

I remember last year Mollie Walker getting a quote from Kreider saying Lindgren is the “F’n Straw that Stirs the Drink”.

The team struggled when Goody and Lindy were sidelined.

Fans shit on players like them because when they are doing their jobs, they arent noticeable on ice. So the only time they do get noticed is when they F'up. When your All Star trait is being reliable at making it possible for your Stars to cheat so they can do magical offence things, the Arm Chair coaches only see the F'ups when the camera is chasing the puck.

The Room respects those guys immensely. The Room knows they have to play differently when those guys arent there to cover their lack of "work" that oft times, may be necessary to make the highlight reel plays required to beat an opponent that may be having a stellar defensive/forchecking night.

The only way to see those nuances is to have experience, the gift to recognize those attributes, and be rink side every game to see the whole picture, not just whats on camera at the moment.

Huh?

This team looked awesome when Lindgren didn't play last year. Their best stretch of the season came in the few games both he and Trouba were out.

The room can respect those guys. The room respected Girardi, Staal, Glass, etc.

Those guys sucked.

Goodrow and Lindgren also suck. I'm 99% sure Goodrow grades out as the 2nd worst skater in the league this season. I can't imagine Lindgren is much better. He doesn't make it easier for stars to do their job, they're all much worse when he shares the ice with them.

Goodrow doesn't play with stars.

The end.

We HATED him in 2013 when he got fired. All of this is just revisionist history.

oh no no... you misunderstand. I don't think Torts wins us a cup.

Torts creates a culture and work ethic while teaching basic fundamentals and a team that can play to win.

You don't win with Torts. You trade Torts for a buddy coach towards the end of his tenure.

That post was just a long winded way for that guy to stroke himself to his own sage “hockey experience”

The team has terrible leadership. Panarin doesnt speak to the media and is allowed to do his own thing on the ice by every coach because of how much he's paid. Not to mention he knows Dolan will always stand by him (Wilson incident, Russia allegations leave of absence, firing both Quinn and Gallant, etc.). Why are we shitting on Lafreniere when he's learned under Panarin? Blueline turnovers and pulling up at the halfwall to avoid contact if you do gain the zone.

Meeka and Cryder are way more complicated but equally disappointing. Both guys are delusional with what they say, going back to Mika saying he did a good job on Barkov in the break-up day media scrum last year (LOL). Kreider last night falling on the sword like a martyr like he hasnt been playing lazy hockey for the entire season. What a hero! It's that type of evidence that shows you the locker room and players are completely removed from the reality of the situation. The fact that this leadership group was shocked that drury would try to get out from Goodrow and Trouba is crazy. It's like they sat through the rebuild so they feel entitled to the fruits of it. Thats why the 3 of them get more ice time when they make mistakes and players like Laf, Chytil and Cuylle are stapled to the bench during important offensive minutes. That's why they havent developed quickly enough to cover for the veterans decline.

The team needs a leader, because they have none. Trouba wasnt one either, he just liked the spotlight. Getting rid of the 3 Stooges is a much more pressing issue than trading for JT Miller, and that should be their priority. They'll be a much better team without them, regardless of who the replacements are.
None of this makes a lot of sense to me. Panarin doesn’t speak to the press. Not sure what that has to do with leadership. So HOF to be Panarin should change his HOF style of play because the young guys on the team may emulate his HOF style of play. There are 4 coaches for 23 players. That should be enough leadership for any team. If not talking to the press displays poor leadership, look no further than the owner and president of the team. Panarin is a bad leader because Wilson beat him up. Panarin is a bad leader because Russian leaders were allegedly threatening his family and he went home to take care of it. Why did J.T take his leave of absence?

Every team that had a good year, followed up by a sub par year did so for one reason. Some, or even most players did not play as well the following year, whether it be because of age or injuries, or something else. I don’t believe it’s because of a lack of leadership, but if it is, blame Drury, because he got rid of the two best leaders we had.The 3 stooges as you call them are who they have always been, except they are playing relatively terribly.
