Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

I won't even entertain this post considering Chmelař, Boyko, Väisänen, Roobroeck and Aspinall are all 6'5 or taller. There's no reason to even put any more thought into a response for me.
Chmelař was drafted at 6'4". Väisänen was drafted at 6'4". Emery was also 6'4". Boyko is a goalie, we were clearly talking about skaters. Roobroeck and Aspinall were drafted at 6'7" and 6'6" and who I was clearly talking about.
Sure looks like you put zero thought into it to begin with, so I'm not surprised at you not putting "any more" into it. Hahahaha.
Love it when people decide to get condescending and make themselves look foolish.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying Miller isn't the guy to usher in this new "enlightened core" and lead them to the promised land, nor should he be. He's being brought in to help the current core and will probably be gone around the same time Panarin, Kreider, and Zib are. He's 32 and a head case, I'm not hinging my team's future on this guy but If you can bottle that up for a season or two and win some games, great. The fact that his contract is moveable is even better, and of of course he's an upgrade considering Chytil's health situations and that they're so thin at the C position.
I don't know if he is or isn't that guy, but it certainly seems like our GM has his mind made up. At this point, I just hope he doesn't cave & overpay.

You really think you did something there, huh?

First hand knowledge of this team having some of the worst professional and amateur scouting in all of professional sports?

Yes... Yes I do.
Are you serious? I believe Drury has made some changes along those lines. Has it at least improved? When I asked about First hand knowledge, I meant are you privy to the actual character of our young guys not yet with the club.

He was misused to an extent but what is the guarantee that he Miller wouldn't be as well? If Miller was 27/28 sure but there isn't much runway with a guy that is turning 32 by the TDL. Unless Mika is going back no thanks

Why would he only be here in 2-3 years? Are we buying him out? What if his production drops in half who is trading for him at 34/35 years of age making the money he makes?

Meh. Chytil is one hit away from sitting out for a year. Or longer. Lindgren is useless. A mid 20’s pick on this year’s draft is like playing a scratch off. If that’s the deal, I make it and put JT on the wing for now and see how Mika’s situation shakes out over the summer.

Are they still listed as 6'4 little boy?
Irrelevant. We were talking about players when they were DRAFTED. Just admit you made a mistake and get on with your life. Or keep compounding it and make yourself look worse. Up to you.
Awww. Is little boy supposed to upset me? "You really think you did something there, huh?" Hahahaha. There's no bigger white flag than name calling. Tell me you have no rational counter without saying you have no rational counter.

Honestly if Mika isn't going the other way, I don't need JT. At this point I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen though, so I'm with @Boris Zubov here. Hoping for an underpay dreading an overpay.

The hold up is cap retention, would you take JT Miller for half his salary, i mean Chytils next deal would be similar and he may never play 60 games again.

I don't know either but I'm gonna guess he's not that guy. But he could be a guy that comes in and lights a bit of a fire in that room. Let him take the tough assignments and free up the other two C's. I think that's where his greatest value to the team is. A lot of went wrong with Zib last year was he got matched up against the other teams top C and he thought of doing nothing else except stopping them and it messed up his own offensive production. Tro's line was historically great last year and they're a shell of themselves this year. Maybe some easier matchups helps them. As far as price, Chytil, Lingdren and a protected first is whatever, I've seen this team do much worse.

If they can get Miller at half salary it would be quite a treat to have Miller, Trochek and Zibanejad as your 3 centers, depth we've been looking for since the cup run.

It's been very Blais.

If we assume the cap will be $97m next year, the Rangers will have A LOT of cap space...

Also, the Miller deal will look even better as time moves on, even if he drops in production.

Here is a comparison by what I mean and I've mentioned this a few times

This chart is showing what Miller % of cap will be projected over the remainder of his contract based on the $97m figure for next year, followed by the 5% escalator beyond that. I'm also projecting his point totals (I took his ppg for this year and just multiplied by 82 for simplicity sake). 80 points next year, followed by 70, 60 and 50.

If look at Trochek, who I believe pretty much everyone believes to be a very good value contract and his % of the cap share and his point totals, for the last 3 years I think we'll see that even if Miller slows down, and I really think the drop off I'm showing is too steep for Miller in general, his % of share of the salary cap as it increases drops him well within the realm of being paid like a middle-6 center which is where his point totals are likely to 'fall' to, if they do so.

Honestly, if Zibanejad would play up to his talent level, the same thought process could be used on him as well.

some top teams have guys playing their off-side.

I'd rather a better player play on their off-side than a player like Lindgren playing on his natural side. Schneider looked good on the left, playing with Trouba. It's worth considering. Also being on his off-side he becomes a threat with a shot... we all know how many opportunities Lindgren gets and blunders. If a fraction of those become goals, it's an improvement.
I don’t disagree with any of this. It’s just that if we are going to weaken our right side D, let’s go ahead and trade him for a LD that is even better than he is on the right. During the last year or so I think there have been rumors that Dal, WPG, Ott, Van and probably others wanted Schneider. He’s one of my favorite players but I really don’t think he’s made that step to be considered a top pair RD, never mind LD. At this point he may offer more value as a trade chip. I’m with those who think our biggest need is a big 1LD to play along side Fox.

Last years UFA season was bonkers. Stamkos got 4 years @ $8m as a 34 years old. Chandler Stephenson got 7 years @ $6.25m. Marshessault got 5 years @ $5.5m at 33 years old.

Looking towards this next crop of UFA's and with the potential of a $9m cap increase, what do we project a guy like Tavares or Duchene getting? What about Jamie Benn? Ehlers? Bennett? Nelson?

Some of these tier 2 or early to mid-30's guys are going to be looking at longer term, $6+ million per year deals and none of them are going to bring the same level of production as Miller. All have various warts.

Schneider++ for Harely is the only type of deal... and I just dont see a team giving up a 'better' player just because of sides.

In related news. Lafreniere was 6'1.28" when he was drafted. He's now 6'1.1". Regression is a bitch.
