Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

This team needs an attitude adjustment. You can see that Drury has had that pegged as a goal for some time. He even has adjusted their drafting philosophy. The reason Trochek sticks out as he does is because his playing style if unique on this roster. Cuylle, Edstrom, Rempe, Lafreniere (when he is playing well), Carrick. There is a style of play that Drury is pushing towards. You can even see it with the addition of Borgen on defense. Miller fits that mold...
The only way Trocheck sticks out is him cratering.

When is Nashville going to pull the plug on this season? They don't have many players with a single year left which means they are pretty locked in to their team for next season already unless they make some moves. BIG UFA deals were given to JAM, Skjei and Stamkos. They already traded Carrier for Barron.

I could see, at this years deadline, quite the reshuffling on the Rangers. Say Drury and his team want to revamp the roster quickly rather than rebuild. Trade Lindgren, Vesey and Smith as rentals. Recoup picks and prospects. I'd really like to see Drury take a stab at trading Kreider if he can make it happen too.

The Miller trade goes through, meaning Chytil is gone, along with prospects (assumption here but lets go with it).

Would Drury circle back on someone like Lauzon who has another year @ $2m on his deal? Nashville opens up cap space going in to next season. What about Tommy Novak? The Rangers could conceivably use Novak at center and push Trochek or Zibanejad to wing. Novak has struggled this season after two pretty effective years in Nashville. Lauzon comes in as another LD, he plays a really physical hard game. Novak becomes the Rangers 3C for the next couple of seasons.

Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

Miller-Borgen
Lauzon-Fox

Miller comes here...How many years does he have at a high level? He's gonna be 32 by the TDL. We trading 3 guys plus a pick all under 25? We better win a fkin cup in the next 2 years.
And I like Miller but the chances of him being this productive 2-3 years from now??? not that great. Especially the way he plays

Jamie Benn is another really physical player. He's 35 but has never been the scorer that Miller is. He's tracking ~50-60 points this season, which is about a 25 point drop from his high.

Kopitar is 37, he has 42 points in 43 games.

Stamkos, at the age of 36, just signed a 4 year deal for $8m per season (same cap hit as Miller). That Preds team has really struggled but he has 30 points in 45 games on a new team.

Claude Giroux is 37 and has 30 points in 46 games.

Miller is 31. I'd say we can and should hope/expect for another 4-5 year of very good play, followed by some good years after that mark.

Miller is the type of guy who really takes care of himself. He's been a powerhouse physically since he was young. This isn't someone who we have to fear will lose strength as he gets older.

With the cap going up, his $8m per season isn't going to be out of line for what the average 2C is making in fairly short order.

I think people are concerned that Miller will drop off a cliff points-wise (this seems unlikely but maybe) and are thinking back to when the cap was stagnant for so many years.

Speculation that the trade fell apart due to conditions on the 1st. So current assumption is that it was Chytil, Sykora, Chmelar, and a 1st, with Bo coming up to fill the open C spot. Someone will post the tweet im referring to, this is not confirmed, but personally not a fan of giving all that up for a lockerroom cancer that is about as locked up contractually as Zib.

Who tweeted it?

Would not like losing Chmelar.

Neither would I but I don’t think you can let him hold up a deal.

I’d much rather try to push Rempe on someone but I think most of the league knows how bad he is.

I thoroughly dislike the inclusion of the 1st

Drance is the Canucks guy for the Athletic

Thats an insane deal to pass up for the rangers. Addition by subtraction on Lindy who is as good as gone anyway and Chytil who I absolutely love but will always be an injury risk plus a conditional first, which stings, for a potential 100 point player. I really am against the locker room stuff but thats hard to pass on.
