I would very genuinely be cautiously optimistic and intrigued if we were to hire someone with virtually zero professional hockey coaching experience but who had a resume that demonstrated significant hockey knowledge and leadership qualities. Naked, honest truth. I would carry limited expectations but feel a strong sense of “hope”.

People hate to admit it but the only important thing they do is set the lineup and combinations. If you think Ryan Lindgren is bad you’re already a better HC choice for NYR

Yeah, I rarely speak on it, because to most fans I believe it comes across as ignorant, but hockey is the least coachable sport there is. Which is also what makes some of the best players so impressive. They’re always calling their own plays, in a split second. Besides settling on line combos, talking to refs and the press and perhaps being a motivator, the biggest impact a coach has is (if they do so) teaching a certain breakout or transition, a certain shift in the D zone where every player moves to a new man when the puck passes a certain point, etc. That happens in practice and only has an impact if it’s a well structured team behavior and they run it with enough repetition for it to become part of the identity of the team. Most coaches don’t come in with a strong enough breakout or transition or even overall culture in mind to initiate serious changes to a team, especially if it isn’t a young team that has yet to establish an identity. Hockey coaches are probably the least important coaches in sports. Playing DI hockey, my coaches were more important when my grandma died and I feel behind in some classes than they ever were on the ice. They kept us in shape by not letting us simply scrimmage every day. That was about it. That’s largely why even the most successful and “legendary” coaches in hockey often end up getting a reputation for sucking later in their careers. They just happened to coach a really talented team earlier on.

Yes, 92.5 is the current estimate for next season. That is the number I used.

Riddle me this folks. There has been just as much if not more trade talk including while not a core guy, someone who I would guess is very well respected in locker room in Chytil and yet the Rangers are playing their best hockey since game 6 of the season. Is it possible that the trade talks hurting their feelings earlier in the season was overblown and it was just bad D system and a guy like Trouba in the lineup?

I would say probably not. I have no idea what you think high level teams are like, but Fil “50% of the games” Chytil is not a core player and has never been a part of the boys club here. No one in the hurt feelings club gives half of a f*** about Chytil, nor did they Kakko.

It blows my mind that Chytil would be respected less for playing 50% of the games rather than fighting back from possibly life altering injuries multiple times and giving his all every shift when he comes back. Other than play more games and wearing a C what has Trouba done to deserve respect more? He sucked at hockey, he actively handicapped the team over the summer. I just don't get it.

I do think that Kreider being named dropped threw everyone for a loop and the Trouba stuff became a distraction but that stuff really only festered because the team wasn't playing well. I don't think it was THE reason they sucked, but it just allowed things to snowball and when things are that miserable, it's tough to break out of it.

The fall off in their play directly correlates to Lindgren being thrown back into the top 4 and right next to Fox shortly there after. It threw off the balance of everything on the back end and of course, giving a bad player big minutes is not a good thing.

It's not entirely on him (The entire top 6 outside of Reilly Smith has underperformed) but that was the true catalyst, not hurt feelings. If they were that pissed then why did they get off to such a hot start? It doesn't make sense.

Switching things up systems wise has made the difference lately as I don't think anyone on the team is playing way better now than they were a month ago outside of Carrick, Edstrom and probably Zibanejad. Other guys have pretty much been what they've been all year..

You don't think getting the D changes in terms of personnel helped? I feel like we played decent D at times even with Trouba when the system was more conservative, so it's a lot because of that. But still I feel like both of the bottom pairs got significant upgrades. And neither upgrade is a superstar, just steady guys added to an unsteady unit.

That's so strange. The majority of these pundits said Hagens was the unanimous 1st overall pick not long ago. Schaefer hasn't played in a month but now he's the 1st overall pick by "a substantial gap". Huh? I don't even have much of an opinion one way or another about one over the other ... but how does this make any sense?

The scouts are essentially saying that they don't see Hagens as a 1C in the NHL i.e. they project him as a smallish (5'10-something) 2C... If he had exceptional skating or a stocky build they might see it differently, but his best asset is his IQ. Schaefer clearly has a higher ceiling and more projectable tools, he's also very young for his draft year.

I think Drury dislikes Kreider's attitude

He rarely engages in a way on the ice as a leader

He helps coddle Zibanejad who Drury actively wants gone - along with his mopey lameness half the time (and especially more prevalent this year because of how bad he has been)

I love Kreider, but I see the argument that the team can't move on to a new chapter till the whole bandaid is ripped off

I just don't get it. I'd understand it if it was his physical play which probably has players respecting him putting his body on the line. But Chytil has put his health on the line way more. It just doesn't make sense to me. We're not talking about Kakko or even Laf here. We're talking about a guy that legit might have CTE when he gets a certain age for these guys.

And if no one, GM, coach, or player thinks he sucks. How do teams manage to putting a winning product together? If they're either so bad at talent evaluation or so biased.

Lost so much respect for the guys vaunted leadership skills when you decide to not even just actively check out, but poison pill the locker room, while still wearing the C mind you, just because a team was utilizing trade searches and options within the damn contract that you signed and milked every last dollar out of
