Id kill to have prime sean avery on this team. Avery would be sooooo good in today’s nhl. Was a good skater, great forechecker, great passer and would be tougher than 95% of players in todays game
Why? He’d score 40 points and, what, f*ck one of his teammates’ wives? He’d spear somebody? Is that the secret sauce?

How will you justify scratching him now? Looks like a new player after the x-mas break and the best player on the team over the past couple of games.

Wait until he is playing like shit again and then scratch him? What if he continues to improve, what then? What is the big plan here?
I'm sure the organization can come up with the appropriate buzz words:

"We needed a change"

"We wanted a new look"

Something vague and uninformative.

I can provide a little insider information and I will go into further detail in the roster management thread….but from what I’ve heard the locker room is completely fractured. No one wants to step up and no one wants to take the bull by the horns. The older guys have completely washed their hands with the team. Laf has been approached in regards to the next captain but either doesn’t think he’s ready or doesn’t want it right now. My guess is he doesn’t think the vets will listen to him.
I posted this in the laf thread but will go into further detail here.

Zib, Kreider, panarin do not hang out or converse with the younger players on the team. The locker room is a cancer. No one wants to take the captain. I’ve heard the most likely player in the room is actually trocheck. The rest of them don’t want to take the burden. Kreider and zib have basically taken a back seat and it’s become a problem. Panarin is panarin and has never been a big fan of hanging or bonding away from the rink. A lot of the younger players are trying to keep their heads down and away from the spotlight.

With the way Laf has been playing, he isn't ready to take it. I wouldn't expect the vets to follow his lead if he can't drive the play as 1OA. Deal everyone, pray Zib fetches a JTM. Any team that's willing to take his contract, please. Kreider probably knows he's gone at the TDL, good riddance. He'll probably get a good return. Cliquey locker rooms has always been an issue in NY. And it's a shame our youth movement was perhaps harmed by our leadership group. Shameful.

Panarin, im not suprised somewhat. He always seemed to me to be a loner, doesnt do interviews, doesnt try to speak much English, but still put up points so whatever

If this is all true, its been very obvious from Kreider and Mika.. Their game should not have fallen off this quickly...kreider literally scored a playoff hat trick 6 months ago

Im ready to turn the page on the core and go through some growing pains but I have no idea how to do something about Zibanejad

All this talk about skill vs. meat and potatoes. Yeah, you need both to win. The problem we have right now is that we have a shit ton of vanilla players that don’t fit either mold.

Panarin is a skill player. Fox is a skill player.

Trocheck is both.
Laf when he’s on is both.
Cuylle is both, but more M+P.
Zib? Vanilla.
Kreider? Vanilla.
Smith? Vanilla.

I feel like fixing the forwards is pretty easy if Zib can be moved. Replacing the wonder twins with effective five on five players does wonders for this team.

The defense is harder. What the f*** is Miller? Schneider is ok I suppose. This team needs several competent defenseman.

I would love to get rid of Mika but if he wants to stay, there's very little the Rangers can do about it. Remember, he likely took millions of $$$ less to have a NMC along with what's basically a buyout proof contract. Sure, he could waive his NMC, buy why? He's got a wife and young child...how would they feel?

In today's NHL you either need to take on someone else's damaged goods and turn them around, or you need to draft your own stars.

You can't miss on 4 top 10 picks in a row and decide to end a rebuild.

Tear it down to the studs... Let's start again.
I’m too old to take it down to the studs again. Dolan isn’t going to be that patient anyway. This will be a quick reload.

I'm of the opinion that there is no such thing as a "reload".

It's a half measure.

You need valuable assets to obtain other valuable assets. The only exceptions to this are the draft and free agency.

The cap killed any possiblity of building a contender around purely free agency.

So that leaves the draft.

Avery never hit 40 points in the NHL. His high was 33 on the Rangers. All style no substance. He energized them for a playoff run his first season here and did the thing with Brodeur.

Kreider has a lot of mileage. It's a very 1980s thing that happened to him if he really hit a wall. Look at Graves after 1999.

Mikko Rantanen and Jakob Chychrun would look great in Blueshirts.
Hard pass. Both would decline very quickly. Chychrun would be a Trouba all over again. Rantanen would be anointed as the new savior and when he fails to live up to it, another untradeable contract.

Draft and bargain bin. Like what the Rangers made out of Stralman and Grabner.

It really doesn’t have to be an either/or scenario. Drury could continue trading away veterans this season and if he does, a retool in the offseason doesn’t need to take 4 years.acquire futures, keep those futures and make the draft picks count and make good signings or trades in the offseason

He’d put up 15G/25A, make games actually fun to watch, drag his team into compete/battle. So yeah, hed be valuable for this soft group.

Figure skating style euro hockey isnt fun and doesnt win cups

Wrong. He put up 48 points the season he was traded to NYR. Avery was criminally underrated from a skill standpoint.

Sorry I missed his HockeyDB. It was only one year. Never even came close again.

Yeah... Stralman and Grabner lead us to how many championships again? I lost count.
Actually if the Rangers keep Stralman instead of old man Dan Boyle, they might have won the Cup in 2015. He also was on the last Rangers team to go beyond the ECF.
