I mean, I guess you could call 13 minutes a night for 2 years with Chytil and Kakko as an opportunity. Of course, it was only chytil and kakko until they inevitably got hurt. Then it was Goodrow and Brod. Haha

In seriousness though, I dont think opportunity is the issue with Laf. It currently is with Berard, Othmann and Perreault. Hell even Parsinnen a bit. Someone needs to tell Laf you work on legs, all day, every day, skate f***ing 8 hours a day until training camp starts. Laf does that, he scores 75 points next year.

All the spicy shit I say and I never get dragged more than when I criticize this middle six nobody.

The guy is teflon.
That middle 6 nobody was our best forward vs the Panthers by far.He had a rough season, everyone did besides Cuylle, but he's shown in last year playoffs he has what it takes to come through when it matters most.I'm not giving up on a young talented player who's still trying to find his consistency.

Confession of a Former Permabuild.
I will start this post off with a long overdue apology to @cwede.
Three seasons ago Chris Drury extended Jimmy Vesey and I lost my mind. I went on the Vesey tread and railed against the signing. Cwede tried talking me off the ledge by explaining an organization can't play all rookies and why, but I'd have none of it.
Shortly after @nyr2k2 posted on the Roster Building thread that AHL.TV (now FloSports) was having a half year sale. I had the time and luckily the money to subscribe. I've learned over the 2 and 1/2 years that young players need to be given the opportunity and time to learn how to play at the NHL level. They need to be surrounded by veterans who have compete and Character.
With most of the Hartford Wolf Pack games there is only a one camera setup. For me this is a plus. With only the one camera I'm able to not only see the play but because of the zoomed out picture I'm also able to watch what players are doing away from the puck. Over this time I was able to see why players like Edstrom, Rempe and Berard were ready to be given a shot and why players like Othmann and Robertson were not. Though I will admit that Othmann has definitely addressed of my concerns I had about his willingness to go to the dirty area's. Now it is jus a matter of "Talent".
Though the bar is pretty low, Matt Robertson has finally started to make strides, yet it maybe too late.
This season the Wolf Pack group is in shambles. They went from a well structured North/South system under Knoblauch and the Smith to total disarray. I can't say if it is the fault of the new Head Coach or if they've been forced to play Lavioleete's system. either way this is not a good environment to developed players. Looking forward I believe that Roobroreck should get a chance to play next season as well as Garand and that Chmelar has the talent but needs more discipline.
Last point. The last two Stanley Cup winners were not built through the draft. Florida's cup roster had only four drafted players and one of them was traded away and brought back. Vegas had three.
When a player gets to the pro level it usually means they have skill(s). Isn't the separation then between winners and losers their character and desire?

I'm pissed at Kreider this year but he works well with kids. Rempe mentioned him the other night. Kreider would bring prospects and younger players to his house in the summer.....help them get it together with fitness and nutrition. Every team needs vets who have good character to help younger players break in and adapt to different roles. To help them adjust to life outside the rink. To keep them from getting too high or too low.

To win in the AHL or even to do okay takes planning. You just can't dump a bunch of kids on a team no matter how much talent they have and expect good results. Having guys who can hold steady and not go into a panic when things aren't going well is important.

But anyway your assessments of the players pretty much are in line with my own. Edstrom, Rempe and Berard were ready before the others. It helped both Rempe and Edstrom to get time in with the Rangers last year. Edstrom in his role was never a surprise to me. He's been pretty much groomed for it in the SHL for a few years already. Rempe's progress since drafted has been something of a surprise though I would note the Rangers signed him soon after they drafted him so they were seeing real potential where most were seeing an awkward as f*** shit player.

Speaking of Chmelar. I think he's had a pretty good season but it's pretty apparent he needs to work on his play away from the puck. He's a -36.

I’d like a larger sample than a 6 game stretch. I don’t think what you’re saying is incorrect but he’s shown nothing consistently to suggest he’s a core piece of this team going forward.

Literally the only thing that slots him into the “core piece” conversation is his age and the fact that he just signed a 7 year deal

We have the option of sending this year's pick no matter where it falls, and trading Panarin isn't a guarantee that we'll be a lottery team next year.
I would bet that Drury is keeping this years pick so next year this team can not be a lottery team

Some interesting data on our defensemen. My takeaways:

1) Adam Fox. That's it. Just Adam Fox.

2) We might be too hard on Miller. We've discussed the culture vs player responsibility, and where that balance lies. If there's anybody I'm willing to buy it on, it's probably Miller. The analytics are always there with him. I know he's annoying and he know he f***s up a lot, I'm not dismissing that, but there might be something there.

3) Schneider is kind of good but he f***ing BLOWS at 5v5 defense and I'm not sure you can hide that.

4) Borgen is an NHL player but he plays too much.

5) Urho is whatever but he's probably upgradeable tbh.

6) The team low-key is a bit better without Trouba and Lindgren, but we always acknowledged that they have other issues. We're seeing that.

I think this team desperately needs one more really good defensemen to kind of domino everyone else where they should be.

With the way prices wound up being at the deadline, they should have just taken their medicine this year, and just did a reset. Borgen probably would have gotten back at least a 2 and a 4. Keep the third round pick you got from Smith instead of getting Soucy, and then he did a nice job getting the 2 and 4 for Lindgren and Vesey. Throw in the 3 and 6 you got from Seattle for Kakko, and the 4th from Trouba, and you would have had a nice draft haul this summer for trades or just make picks.

I tend to be in agreement with the view that Laf is not a big enough talent to play above institutional barriers, but a better org in place might squeeze more production out of him. In the end, I consider him a bust.

I'm not an apologist for him.
I’m just clinging to my copium.

I just don’t believe he’s putting in the work and it’s compounded by terrible coaching.

His shot and motor sucks. Can be improved

I was looking at Mika Zibanejad's hockeydb. Utah HC's head coach Andre Tourigny was an assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators in 2015-16. Zibanejad's last season in Ottawa. Would Utah be interested in Zibanejad? Would Zibanejad waive for Utah? Park City, Utah is a beautiful place to live. Rich high end neighborhoods. I know a few New Yorkers who own homes in Park City. They love it. Park City is 40 minute drive to the Delta Center.

Minnesota. They have fellow Swedes in Jonas Brodin and JEE. Zibanjead liked being around his countryman at the 4 Nations. Mats Zuccarello is there for another year. I really like Liam Ohgren.

Both Utah and Minnesota have cap space. Need help at center.

And we need to be able to trot out that defenseman for 24 minutes a game. They can break during the power plays, but you really want to reduce the minutes that the 3rd pair LD is logging (And the players they are out against), whether that's Vaak or someone else.

Then you let Borgen and Schneider war over the 2nd LD position.

I'm one of the resident Kappo Kakko defenders on this board but.....yeah lmao. He's the same guy just playing more.

Its like a player putting up 30 in a basketball game and that's cool until you realize he did it on 47 shots.
That is exactly right. 2B/3A player. Helped us defensively. But like Laf doesn't offer speed or an edge.

Problem is that we kind of ran him out of town for a smaller trade return. Not a great conclusion, but it's not like we traded Marc Savard or Tony Amonte.
