Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Yes, I want to know why such a good player has only managed to get 3 consecutive one year deals for around league minimum from "smart teams" like Carolina,Tampa, and Colorado and none of those saw fit to ever make him a full time player, play him in the playoffs, or extend him.

you're just creating a strawman now. i dont give a f*** what other teams did, all i know is what i saw watching the games, he was a fine steady defenseman that could actually skate well enough to not constantly be out of position and actually had a clue of what to do in the offensive zone, which was backed up by the fancy stats he put up in those games (while playing with Zac Jones who everyone thinks sucks!). i never said he was nik lidstrom. i said he was "better than Soucy" which is not very difficult to do.

but surely decent players never fly under the radar or are underutilized, either. every front office and coach is 100% right all the time and players like Brandon Montour and Gustav Forsling can never be picked up off the scrap heap and win Stanley Cups.

I doubt he's better than Soucy. You can't know in 3 games anyway. The fancy stats are entirely noise in 3 games. And one player is signed for next year and one isn't. It's pretty obvious you would default to the the guy who may be with the team next year vs the guy who won't.

Even if we take your stance that de Haan is better than Soucy he is not so much better that it's worth multiple points in the standings over 18 games. The difference, in baseball, between a bad player and an average player is 2 WAR over 162 games. That's 0.1 WAR per 9 games (using 9 games instead of 18 since the baseball season is twice as long).

And the entire reason his "fancy stats" are so good is because of one game against the Islanders. The Washington game was very low event that won't change the numbers much. The preds game was slightly negative. That is why you don't use stats like that in 3 games. They can change massively based on one performance.

if Calvin didn’t want this getting out before the scrum, he shouldn’t have said anything before the scrum. Throwing shade at Mollie is weak.

That being said, I want him to speak up. Flame on!
Mollie was good until this year. She doesn't get special treatment, sorry. If she's gonna write good articles like she did the last few years, wonderful. She hasn't.

This is to encourage engagement on the socials and here because otherwise the biggest stories from now until Thursday are what Sam will say, which AHL guys get called up, and who will be sitting for injuries.

I've also said Vince stinks this year too. Total opportunist with his hit pieces when he's not on his rotating parental leave.

Colin has been the best beat writer. The other Twitter guys like Dave and Lazarus offer the best coverage.

I miss Andrew Gross covering the team. And Carp.

Panarin? The Rangers just missed the playoffs with Panarin. Another season of the Rangers wanting to play north and south and Panarin wants to play east and west. The next coach will already be undermined.

These people here are funny. Nobody can be traded because the return will be poor and they only want to trade the players who are struggling. Crazy logic.

I'm not trying to white knight for Mollie, but what did she report that Peter Baugh didn't?

Has it crossed your mind at all that with the turmoil that has become this season she's backed off to let Brooks do most of the hard edge articles based on his status, and quite honestly the fact that the team isn't going to be able to ostracize him at this point if they don't like something he writes based on his career/status?

Molly is in a slightly different situation, she doesn't quite have the cache to go after the team/players the way that Brooks has this year. I would imagine that's probably part of why she's been toeing the line a lot and not writing the hit type pieces many are looking for here

And neither of them will go after management.

Vince wrote some nasty stuff. He's Mollie's equal.

Its a different dynamic with Vince, I don't think they are equals really Vince isn't behind a hall of famer at his outlet nor are the outlets the same.

I'm not looking for a debate on the beat writers here, I'm giving something for consideration.

I won't beat this to death, I was just talking about age and where they are in their career.

They also have pretty similar follows on the socials (I personally think it's overrated....it's a Gen Z thing).

He’s gone after LaViolette and players but not Drury. At least not directly
He's called out a few times what a shit show the email created and the fact that he handled the truva situation wrong in the summer. It's also been talked about several times on the podcast he has with Molly and Boyle

Yup, this week he singled out Kreider as a baby and said the Rangers threw a junior school tantrum or whatever all season.

But not openly critical of Drury. Vince has openly criticized Drury’s errors. Vince is a breath of fresh air to read. Larry Brooks is still a Dolan pawn.
