Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Then how come Carolina and Tampa also got rid of him and healthy scratched him for 19/20 playoff games?

No organizations think this guy is a good player. But I’m sure the fans who saw him play 3 games and him having meaningless ok numbers in that sample are right. He’s secretly a top four dman yet none of the league know it.

i dunno, maybe they had a better defense corps than we do (not exactly a high mark to achieve)

he had a 60% XGF in the games he did play, he deserved to get another shot. i can confidently say he looked much better than Soucy, either way.

de Haan is not your typical NHL "we gave 110%" NHL personality as evident from his interview when he arrived. He's more along the Paul Maurice lines.

Unless he was hazed or something he's frustrated and is fighting for his NHL career to continue.

This isn't much of a story.

Also it's coming from Mollie. She's become a podscaster/influencer/sensationalist this season and much less of a reporter. She needs to keep those clicks and retweets coming. She was good but is closer to Amanda Borges than Jane McManus this season.

De Haan statement reeks of Rangers damage control. Say whatever about Mollie, but she's not just going to make up a f***ing quote lol.

No one from the Post will criticize management. Only the coaching staff and players are in their crosshairs.

I can confidently say you should not be seriously using xGF based off 3 games and 44 minutes of play.

And if you are going to use it as a reason for him to play over Soucy, then you should also be mentioning that Soucy has a 56 xG% in his 15 games.

But the real question is why would a guy who was a throw in to a trade be getting ice time over anyone else? He's not playing over Fox/Miller/Schneider/Borgen obviously who are all either signed long term or RFAs. People already get mad when Jones is out. Why would he play over Vaakanainen/Soucy when those guys are signed next year and he isn't?

This whole season has been a shitshow. It's been one giant mutiny against Drury and this organization. Whether you were traded here recently or you've been here for years, the players obviously hate the culture, hate management, and don't play hard.

You can't fire 20+ players, but you can fire the asshole who put these ragtag bunch of misfits together.

f*** Chris Drury

I get his frustration because players want to play, but he's just past his expiration date at this point. Happens to everyone. Probably a good thing this disappointing season is almost over for everyone involved.

if Calvin didn’t want this getting out before the scrum, he shouldn’t have said anything before the scrum. Throwing shade at Mollie is weak.

That being said, I want him to speak up. Flame on!

can you? you're the one using "other teams and GM's" as the basis of your argument. at least mine is backed up with something objective.

LOL the teams 8th defenseman is now calling out everyone. Was he promised playing time that never came? Is he pissed that Robertson was called up to get some games? I'm actually legitimately curious to know what his gripe is.
Watching Soucy suck, Miller suck, Schneider suck and knowing he is hurt

Yet none of those guys even get benched for a single game to let De Haan in

De Haan is not great, but he has a point

Players also get benched all the time, and a journeyman like De Haan knows that best, so I assume it takes some real lack of respect and bullshit on lineup choices by the coaching staff to piss someone off that much about it all.

I'm the eternal optimist - I think with just a few moves we could be back in the hunt next season. Obviously awful vibes this year. Will ditching Kreider and Lav fix that? In order of importance (in my opinion):

1) New coach, duh. For the love of god deploy a defense that suits the personnel. I don't know what that is. But it's definitely not what we saw this year.
2) Acquire 2C with 1C potential (Rossi, Wright, Batherson, Pinto, McTavish, etc.. easier said than done of course).
3) Find. Fox. A. Damn. Partner. Hopefully it's Fortescue in 26/27. But need someone immediately.
4) Let the kids play. Nice blend of youth and vets - no reason we cannot bounce back next year.

Kreider + Miller + picks/prospects for Rossi (he's been in trade rumors for years .. obviously that quieted and he had a hell of a year, but worth visiting. Kaprizov payday looming. Blow them away with an offer.

Gavrikov big FA signing.

Start Gabe in AHL. See how things go .. flexibility to move Panarin at deadline and stock the cupboard. Fill in around the edges.

Not crazy about the D, but hopefully a coaching change yields surprising (positive) results. And think it's ambitious to expect a bunch of guys to be shown the door

Cuylle - Miller - Zibs
Panarin - Rossi - Othmann
Berard - Trocheck - Laf
Edstrom - Carrick - Rempe/Brodz

Gavrikov Fox
Soucy Borgen
Vak Schneider

Igor

you have the right idea which is LD/2C are priority.

the left side of the D you have is god awful. soucy schneider 3rd pair but you need someone who can skate.

Yes, I want to know why such a good player has only managed to get 3 consecutive one year deals for around league minimum from "smart teams" like Carolina,Tampa, and Colorado and none of those saw fit to ever make him a full time player, play him in the playoffs, or extend him.

Maybe the actual cancer is Calvin de Haan. How come Carolina/Tampa/Colorado all got rid of him in three straight years? How come none of his previous teams wanted to re-sign him when he has been getting league minimum deals? How come he has been a permanently healthy scratch in the playoffs for Carolina/Tampa? How come he didn't play 60 games in a season for any of those teams in the last 3 years?
oh man you're serious?
