Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

I have zero confidence in Drury to do the right thing this offseason and going forward, he’s shown he has no idea how to construct a sustainable, winning roster. Rangers future looks pretty bleak in the near term.
I'd argue Drury clearly identified the problem. I'd argue he made attempts to fix it, without mortgaging the long term.
I think he knew the ECF run last year was a mirage. Wanted to move both Trouba and Goodrow.

The team deflating like a balloon is not Drury, its the team and its Lavi.

Someone else said it here perfectly. Drury can identify problems with the team but he has no idea how to fix them.

He identified the problem by replacing Trouba, Lindgren, and Jones with Borgen, Vaakanainen, and Soucy. Arguably a downgrade and definitely no better by any stretch of the imagination. Ended up giving up another 1st round pick when it was clear the team was in need of taking a step back, I don’t care if the deal was too good to pass up or whatever other garbage people need to make up to feel good about the trade. He also gets no credit for identifying that Goodrow was a problem when he signed him to a ridiculous contract in the first place. I could go through all the other stupid decisions he’s made but it’s too long a list to do so.

I'd argue lets see what he does with some actual cap space? If he can move any of the following CK/Mika/Panarin, he'll have space to make moves. I'm also not sure he's gonna push for the playoffs next year. Bottoming out might be on his agenda for a year or two if he's "secure in his job"
The draft pick move will be telling. If he ships it out now, then we're bottoming out.

I know this year has been horrific but everyone had a bad year but Cuylle and Berard and they still have 81 points. It's not possible to have Igor and Fox and have 55 points. That's just not a thing.

They're didn't sign Igor to bottom out. The pick they keep and flip for a top 4 LD. Maybe flip with KAM for a top 2 LD. A real one.

The worst part is the conclusion is gonna be “well clearly Trouba and Lindgren weren’t as bad as people said if everyone’s now saying the replacements are just as bad”. Drury is as bad as humanly possibly at identifying talent.

There was about 30 minutes after the Trouba trade and before the Igor extension where things made sense. But that’s the Drury story. One step forward two steps backwards

I have a hard time getting behind the “players quit” narrative when half these guys appear to be following an entirely predictable aging curve and the other half, I’m not sure how good they were to begin with.

Is Kreider “quitting” or is he just going through the inevitable decline a 33 year old NHL player usually goes through and we are all inventing a narrative to make ourselves feel better, that the org isn’t on the downswing.

50 points is a fairly sharp decline for any player. Zib turns 32 this week. A 60 point season at 31 is a pretty sharp decline. Fox is 27. A 60 point season is pretty “off” for him. Yes, the window is closing (closed, let’s be honest) but this season wasn’t just reasonable age related decline. The team, even if only for portions of the year, absolutely played gutless, heartless hockey - enough that I wouldn’t want a single one of them who is more than a 5 year pro to ever wear this jersey again. It was pathetic.

What are we even talking about with Bedard? He’s 19 years old and has 43 goals and 124 points in 148 career games. Alexis Lafreniere turned 19 six games into his NHL career and managed to reach 148 total points by the end of his fourth full NHL season. Let’s not be lazy and act like a smaller guy like Jack Hughes didn’t take a couple of seasons to hit his stride (and his first two seasons were dog shit compared to Bedard) or that Mackinnon didnt take 4-5 seasons to start putting up big dog points. Bedard is almost a lock to be a 90+ point player within 2 years. He is 19 years old. It’s silly.

None of us on the boards can replace NHL players. But I honestly believe the vast majority of posters on here could and would do a better job than Chris Drury. The main ingredient to being a successful GM is common sense, and a true vision for what you want your team to look like. And for most of us, that means not trading draft capital for depth defenseman every flipping year. It also means providing opportunities for the players you draft to actually play in the NHL. Not airing your dirty laundry in public also helps.

What problems has Drury successfully identified? He couldn’t spot the differences in a Highlights Magazine picture in a doctors office after someone already circled them in pen

Chytil had his next big concussion, and Miller is worth substantially more in a trade today than we paid for him 2 months ago.

But the clock is ticking. Unless we have reason to think that he will age super well, he has 2-3 more seasons max at the top of his game.

Said it a million times at this point, but Drury has SO much work to do to make this a good team the next 2-3 seasons, and going in with Soucy-Fox, Miller-Borgen, Vaak-Schneider is the number one major issue. You need K'Andre to find his game again AND get another bona fide top 4 to even make this a league average blue line.

Which is fine because he has a full NMC for two more seasons before the last 3 years of his deal changes to a 15 team no trade clause. If he falls off a cliff in 3 years or we need to tear it down/ship him out it'll be very manageable by then. 17 teams to deal with and his $8M salary at that point will probably seem like $5M today the way the cap is going up.

So, Fox's window to be on a championship team has closed?
