Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

I think there's a lot of grumpiness and disgust from this season and rightfully so. Personally I'm checked out and after the report from practice by the half assed beat, when he's using the same PP units, it's time to move on from this coach and have a break from this roster.

One of my themes here is I always say the modern NHL is a hybrid of the NFL/MLB in terms of timelines and competitiveness, so all hope is not lost. Look at the Winnipeg Jets, they were "stuck in mediocrity" following their 2018 trip to the Western Conference Finals, and after the Hellybyuck and Schiefle extensions everyone said they're gonna be an 8th seed team the next decade. There was even talk of them having to leave town due to low attendance. The Caps were washed up two years ago and now they're fighting with the Jets for the President's Trophy. Kings and Wild are two other teams who were stuck in mud but are good again.

Let's try to get through the next four games and get Gabe/Othmann some experience for this fall. Enjoy Wednesday when Sam and JD get one final rodeo together. Next week for as bad as the hockey is, it's the final few hours we get to spend with Sam in an official capacity.

And then.....Laviolette will be gone maybe by Easter or maybe a day or two after,,,,,I'm gonna enjoy the spring, take a trip or two, and enjoy the time of year when the weather is actually acceptable in the Northeast,

I advise many of you to do the same as there will be plenty of time to get back into Mika's diet, Miller's focus, and Fox changing his training.

Yes because 30 years ago it worked with Leetch and Beukeboom we need to re-create it. Drives me up the wall. Colorado got Makar and was like you know what lets go out and get Towes and have an unreal top pair. We get Fox and pair him with Warrior and everyone got boners from their youth. Admittedly, I did like it at first but we all knew what the outcome and ceiling of that was.

I haven't been watching much but I think I saw Soucy is playing with Fox? Like really? There's about 6-7 guys in the organization that I would rather have play with Fox. 2 of them would probably be forwards too.
Eh the Rangers in those days shot themselves in the foot because Neil Smith after 1994 couldn't help himself.

They have Zubov, Norstrom, Karpotsev (RIP), Johnson, Kloucek (RIP), and Zidlicky all in the organization at various points and that doesn't even include Cairns and looney tunes Purington.

Now the prospect depth is......Fortescue and Dorington, and I don't even know if you can count Larsson as a real prospect.

Emery.

I don't think we can take a lot from Larsson's year. When Northern Michigan's coach decided to leave kind of all a sudden it started an exodus of most of their best player's they were counting on for this year. Things should be a lot more stable with his team next season.

KAM has a #1 LD skills but his play has been horrible in way too many games this season. I really do not even understand how he has made some awful decisions and passes. KAM is very frustrating. Is he a 1? Not this season. Is he a #2? Probably but a bad one this season.

Soucy is just a journeyman that probably was not even worth the 3rd round pick we paid for him.

I had high hopes for Jones but being a borderline 6th/7th Dman is not what I hoped for this season. Vaaks is basically in the same boat. Borderline 6/7 Dman who was a castoff multiple times.

The bottom line is our left side is a mess and its hard to have much faith in any of them right now.
Mostly agree.

KAM is possibly not even a poor #2 this season. The upside is still there, and we have nothing coming up the pipeline for a few years. I say he's a keeper, warts and all.

I had higher hopes for Jones as well, but I'd still like to keep him for next year if possible. He has a toolset that is sorely lacking on this team outside of Fox.

Let's say we can trade Soucy for a 5th at the deadline and bust our trade capital nut on "the next Hanifin situation." I would be pretty pleased with our left side by swapping out one guy for a big add. That's the point where I don't think it's a "total mess." It's just missing an integral piece.

Soucy - Borgen would be a perfect 3rd pair on a good team. Used in any other role other than in a pinch due to injuries is not a good idea. For next year:

XXXX - Fox
Miller - Schneider
Soucy - Borgen
Cheap 7th D

Pretty sure Jones time here is done whether we like it or not
Borgen is slightly in over his head at 2RD, but if Schneider takes a nice step forward (I'm still bullish on him), then Borg is a perfect 3rd pair guy, I agree.

I just can't extend that to Soucy. Maybe after a full training camp, we'll see who he really is. All we can really do is hope for the best. If we find that perfect LD add by the TDL, then waive him if we can't find a trade partner for better than future considerations.

If Jones forces his way out, I wouldn't hold anything against him. I like the idea of platooning him and Vaaks next season, though.

Haha, I forgot about Emery and have not got to see a video of his point (j/k I know it doesn't mean anything).

I can't see a reason for Jones to come back and sign. We pretty much gave his spot to 2 players who shouldn't even be on the team.

Jones didn't win over Gallant and he didn't win over Laviolette. He would be better off getting a new start somewhere else. He moves the puck really well but the offensive production hasn't really come about and if you look he's played about the same amount of games for us as Vaakanainen and Borgen and has less point production than either. He hasn't got a lot of power play time but those other two don't get any at all. It's not working for him here.

Would we even qualify him at his point?
He's so far down the depth chart that it seems you'd just be qualifying him to lose him on waivers
Unless they think him with a known cap value helps include him as a throw in at the Draft?

I think Jones would not want to be qualified. If the Rangers could not even get a 6th or 7th Round pick for him, then whats the point of hanging on to him. Do him a solid and let him have a change of scenery.

Bu-bu-but he will tell tales of 94 and how in the 80s he threatened to throw some guy off a plane.

#Toffness

I love Mess as much as the next guy and I'm forever grateful for 94. That, the 86 Mets (they're doing another documentary apparently) and a few things in wrestling like the Montreal Screwjob and Hell in The Cell are things that really don't need to be discussed any further.
Vice's Dark Side of the Ring s6 premiere is about Hell in a Cell.

Let's take a generous view of Soucy and say he's a solid complimentary defender.

That's still stupid. That's a dime a dozen role player that we're going to play a bigger role than he needs because that's what we do.

I thought we were having a pretty decent deadline. Always hated the Miller trade but at least on the day of I thought "ok, we're selling off some pieces, maybe we'll change directions."

I said it when it happened - the Soucy trade ruined the whole deadline. And people said it was an overreaction but it's not because the move itself was so consequential. It's because it showed they learned nothing.

They decided that Will Borgen is their archetype defenseman. Not a cute little role player that plays #6 minutes -- the type of player the corps should be built around, and they went and got a few of him.

Let's talk about "ideal" for a second -- which is something this franchise hasn't had since Bill Cook and probably won't have until I'm dead. Ideal would have been an A/B situation with another great defenseman who excels at what Fox is weak at. Instead it's gonna be Fox and Borgen⁵ for a generation of Rangers hockey. That's the defense they envision winning the Cup with.

32 year old, always had flaws, been traded by three teams, JT Miller is the 1C they envision winning the Cup with.

Alexander Ovechkin just scored the most goals in NHL history. The guy has one Stanley Cup. And we're trying to win with guys who if they served Ovechkin a hot dog, he would complain to his agent.
Been saying this for months as well, but to piggy back on what you are saying, how many other GMs in this league do we think would have prioritized Borgen it the way that Drury did, especially giving him five years after only weeks with the team

What other professional else thinks Borgen is an ideal besides Drury

To the tune of A Bar Song

One, here comes the two to the three to the four
Tell 'em "Bring another D, we need plenty more"
Two-steppin' on the table, we don’t need guys that score
Oh my, good Lord

For me this season has been a f***ing disaster and I just want it over with.

My younger brother who was a Rangers fan died last month and though we didn't talk that often.....he was living out in Washington state......when we did we usually talked a bit about the Rangers. So I'm heading out later this month for his funeral service and the rest of me is like f*** this shit.....let the spring come and tune out sports for a while. I don't really care which team wins as long as it ain't another metro area team.

please lose out... k thx

need to get to 10-11 spot in the draft and hope for another lotto

If they're going to lose, just lose.

I'm at the point where, with 6 games to go, being 6 points back, I think they start sitting guys. They have young players who should be given a real shot to play. It's that time

They never do this and I don’t expect that they will this year either.

Montreal has basically sat half of their roster for having a hang nail after they’ve fallen out of it in the past.

I don’t think they’ll be mathematically eliminated until Thursday at the earliest and probably Saturday more realistically.

If they sit Trocheck for the final 3 because he does intact have a broken hand I’m going to be beyond pissed.
