Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Drury has been an issue since he tore a strip off a couple kids in front of their new teamates in Hartford when he was GM there, 2 guys trying to get acclimated to a new country, one without much English. Imo he's easy to dislike, and it's easy to quiet quit on a guy that's traded friends of yours if you already don't have much love for him to begin with. He needs to go for many reasons, his trades and signings included, but for some reason it seems he'll be back with a new coach. I think he is stuck in the 80s and his way doesn't work anymore.

Did Drury bring Trouba's family into it? Or did Trouba do that himself? Drury never said a peep about Trouba's wife as far as I know. Larry Brooks reported Trouba was threatening to not report, or that he wouldnt be happy outside NY. It's a little bit disingenuous for you to tell me I'm making assumptions about the locker room when you are making similar assumptions about what went down around these trades. At the end of the day, nothing illegal was done. Feelings were hurt. Fine. It's a business.
yes

McDavid is the only in the current top 10 in scoring to have even scored 70 points his second season. Some of them didn't play full seasons but many were also older than Bedard. I don't see much reason to be concerned. The Blackhawks are showing the problem with the neverending rebuild when you totally strip it down. If you don't try to be good you won't be good. They haven't signed or brought in many guys. Certainly nobody first line worthy.

The funny thing is, he grew up a spoiled, coddled little rich kid in Trumbull.

would be happy to have drury replaced, don't get me wrong

that said the players aren't "playing for him" they should beplaying for each other and the team and to fulfill their goal of winning the cup. if they dont' want to play for him they should ask for a trade, not this bullshit we saw this year

Are we back to "Drury should be fired because he's mean?" Give me a f***ing break. Hahahaha. He's done nothing that pretty much any GM in the league wouldn't do. And it's all been 100% above board business. You don't think so? PROVE IT. I don't care how big of a dick he is if he gets the job done.
You want to argue he's done a bad job as GM? Whether I agree or not, its a valid tact. Fine, argue it all day, but this whole angle of him not being sensitive enough of players' feelings? What f***ing nonsense. They can cry me a motherf***ing RIVER.

You can provide sources?

e: Brooks article on this seems to paint a bit of a different picture in general:

We are told that has become part of the league-wide conversation, with several teams that otherwise would have been in big-time on Trouba now likely to wait until next year when Dr. Tyson-Trouba’s residency ends with the defenseman having one final season on his contract.

Sources report that communication between Trouba, his camp and Drury and management have been professional without animosity that would infect or negatively impact the defenseman’s role as captain. If nothing further develops, it might become a one-sentence Q&A the first day of training camp

“As I said at the end of the year, Jacob plays hard every night and provides a lot of leadership for us,” Drury said on a conference call with the media on Monday when asked about Trouba’s status. “Jacob knows what I think of him as a person and a player. I’m going to keep any private conversation I have with him or his agent to be kept private.

at most it sounds like it was a consideration in any trade and teams had to be aware of it

He only has 59 points.

We talked about it with Lafreniere -- if guys are the type of player Bedard was expected to be, we usually see it by now. I would be concerned if I was a Hawks fan.
Yeah this is just not true at all. He had 61 in 68 last year, and now his sophomore season (very common to “slump”) coming off an injury he’s projected for 65 in 82. Oh yeah he’s 19 years old. He’s a first line player if you’ve watched him and hasn’t hit his ceiling. Way better than Lafreniere. I wouldnt be concerned at all as a hawks fan

MacKinnon wasn’t MacKinnon until
He was 23 or 24.

Part of the issue is he’s walked into a pretty barren situation where as the other top guys have had way more support. You can’t do what the Rangers did but you can’t just throw him out there with what he’s had to work with. That’s a team that could really use current edition Panarin or someone like that.

He’ll be fine and if Chicago is worried I’d gladly take him off their hands.
Share the thought but doubt CHI is on the same page

They need a speed W for him, pref 2, and the play here is Berard.
maybe Berard + SEA 2025 3rd + NYR 2026 3rd
for
return of NYR 2025 4th, DAL 2025 2nd and NYI 2026 2nd

something like that

No one said they were a failure for falling short. I think Drury's offseason was a failure given what transpired. I just want to know what the logic is behind blaming Drury for Mika having 16 goals on the season and Kreider having 5(FIVE!) assists with 7games left in the season. Panarin is going to finish with his worst season as a ranger. Trocheck has been horrible. Lafreniere has regressed. K'Andre with his second straight down season. Fox down year. Why is this on the GM? these guys were supposed to be the foundation of the franchise. All because Drury traded Trouba after he himself admitted that he was checked out? he was the captain of the team lol.
Trouba was checked out because Drury told him he stinks as a player and kept harassing him to waive his no trade clause so he could be shipped away from his wife and baby, after watching what he did to his buddy who played with a broken ankle and broken jaw, still fought for his teammates, and had one of the best playoffs of all the Rangers last year. Then Drury puts out that no one on the Rangers is safe and specifically mentioned the longest tenured Ranger as being on the trade block. Drury must be a genius since I have never seen another NHL GM so magnificently proficient at motivating his players. This just proves what a country club team they are, they just don’t know how to respond to such genius.

I hear you. All I have to say is if you work for a boss who disrespects you, or is perceived to disrespect you, and actively tries to get you removed from the company, your work is more likely than not going to suffer.

Also, A good Bread quote in todays Larry paywall article.

Othmann does deserve a long leash. Even if he has a ways left to develop, he has a lot of the tools that could easily translate into a middle 6 wing role. The team is going to need contributions from guys on ELC contracts.

I would love this to be the formula going forward. it was obvious with the eye test as well that each kid was visible in a good way on their line. Even Berard on the 4th line was crashing behind the net and trying to win board battles.

I hear you but the bolded is very naive. Were the Lightning kind and gentle when they put a Blue jackets branded gun to McDonagh's head to force a trade to Nashville? Its the way the league goes. It's a business. And I dont really feel bad for Trouba or Goodrow or Kreider because this was always their year their trade protection got weaker and the Rangers would look to move them if we didnt win. the check is still clearing at the end of the month for them, no matter where their new rental property is.

The commitment to Lindgren for as long as they have been has really set us back. No arguments from me there.
And did Tampa Bay improve by trading McDonagh? I understand your point of view and respect it, what I am saying is I think Drury is a bit of a jerk, and not an especially talented GM. Your position is Drury is OK, but it’s the coach and players fault everyone on the team stinks. My position is it’s mostly Drury’s fault that the players stink, both by the atmosphere he has fostered, and by the various trades/acquisitions he has made. I don’t want to sound like too much of a Kreider guy, but I can’t help but wonder if no big changes were made, would his play still be this bad? Did he just get old, or did he let the other stuff get to him, because if he was able to perform at last years level, I believe we would be top 7 PP, which I believe would be worth another 7 or 8 wins, and we would be a playoff team. Would it be enough to win the cup? Probably not, but as bad as the league is this year…….

I just don't think I understand what Drury is good at that a replacement level GM isn't?

Maybe you consider his ruthlessness a pro in the way it's been a pro for Vegas' management, but as we've seen this season, he kinda somehow sucks at that too.

The Igor extension is basically his defining move and it says so much about him; 1) he caved into the pressure of vastly overpaying him AND 2) he did it because he knows his job security is/was directly connected to the performance in goal .

Classic NYR fans. Currently losing because of coaches using bad players? Time to pine for our former bad players who made us lose

Drury is by all accounts a POS human but it’s not why he sucks as GM or why they suck now. Anyone who thinks the team is too sad about Goodrow to try, go play with your blocks
