Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

When the team was sucking at the beginning of the year the games were brutal to watch. Told my wife that I was hoping by the end of the year we would have jettisoned various players and give the kids a real shot. IDGAF if we win or lose these days, prefer we lose since we're not making noise this year, but really enjoying watching these kids grow. Ignoring the giant whiffs on our 1&2 OA's - the team did some good work finding these guys.

Would be nice if they could find a semi-stud D somewhere. I just don't think Schneider is it. Miller has looked better in the second half but also probably not it and getting older.
Always fun to see new younger guys but after a while they are no longer the new shiny toys and we expect them to be better. I like watching our new younger guys but we really need to find a way to get some tope line talents.

Problem is how many are top talent 1st liners? Maybe Laf makes the jump and so does Gabe in a couple years. None of them are centers and that’s an optimistic best case scenario on how they project out.

Everyone else is a middle / bottom six tweeter.
That will be the big issue for the future. How do we find first line and first D pairing level talent. We have a lot of bottom 9 forwards and bottom 4 pairings but those guys are fairly easy to find.

and they’re all wings. No f***ing center amongst them outside of Edstrom (maybe)

The culture was destroyed by the players. The players hate drury because he is trying to destroy their country club, hence why kreider and company cried a river when goodrow and trouba were traded and to an extent jim ramsey’s firing.

Drury should absolutely be here through the summer to finish the job and ship out these loser players.

The worst thing we could have happen is we get s new GM that caters to these vets, then you will see nothing change next season.
I think it’s the opposite and you do not want Drury (and Laviolette) making deals if he is a lame duck.

You don’t want him making more moves and getting players the next regime isn’t going to want. Drury spent all year getting weird redundant dmen; he obviously has a type. How much longer are you going to let him push that button?

Lav is 100% going to be gone, i'm not too concerned with that.

perrault looks different tho

he looks kane-esque handling the puck. he’s obviously not as good of a skater and probably doesn’t have as good of a shot, but as a puck handler he looked special
I've compared him to Zuccarello a lot, but one thing that stands out at the NHL level is he has pretty solid athleticism. He's 'shifty' as they say. Zucc built up his legs and got good at protecting the puck for a guy his size, but never quite had elite shiftiness.

Laf’s season can be summed up with one play…

In all fairness, the pass actually got tipped and went behind Laf. If not Laf had a gimme. Gabe is likely going to be a point machine once he and his linemates get familiar. He’s excellent at using/feeding his linemates. Having top NHL talent to work with he’s going to take off in the next couple of seasons.

We need a young center. I’m seeing Laf and Perrault as first line talents. JT will be fine for a few years but CENTER , particularly 1C is a need for the future.

To my mind Cuylle could also end up being a first line talent. He’s a power forward type who is barely 23. He’s got a couple more years till he’s a finished product. And he will work himself into improvement. He’s a 2nd liner at worst.
Othmann is also the exact type of player we need, and I think he could easily top out as a second line talent, if not, a third liner with some scoring. And he just turned 22 this year he’s got lots of runway as a physical winger.
We have about 12 candidates for bottom 6 slots. Maybe a couple will surprise and be top 6. But filling those roles with “cheap” homegrown contracts will give us a lot of room to maneuver.
Emery, Dorrington and Fortescue are going to give us a D that’s not easy to play against… but it’s going to be a few years. And Fox, Miller and Schneider are all reasonably young as well.
We are set at goalie position unless something happens to Shesty.

Brings us back to Center. Troch and Zibs are unfortunately starting to slide. IMO, f*** BPA, draft centers, unless a non center is head and shoulders above or a particularly coveted non center is available.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Not doomed. But coaches don't usually last more than 3 years here. Maybe when we ship out the country club that will change. Hopefully.
I mean, that’s part of the problem don’t you think? That we can’t keep any leadership in place? Yes coaches have a short lifespan, but you can’t keep letting the same GM hire the same lame duck coaches. I mean of the next coach here isn’t Sullivan or Q it’s going to be a shock. Insanity is doing to same thing and expecting different results
