Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

If we move ck/mika/panarin
Really really high
Yeah, I don't see it. We aren't moving all 3 of them without bringing significant players back. I doubt we move more than 1 of them. Drury is going to do whatever he can to get us into the playoffs next year.

The only way we get a better pick than 4th next year is if we win the lottery, and the odds are against us winning twice in a row. Yes, we did it once and haven't won a lottery outside of those 2 times. It won't happen again.

I'll bet any amount of money that if we get the 4th pick or better, we won't trade it.

We need to notify Pitt 48 hrs prior to the draft this year if we are keeping or surrendering our 1st Rd pick. Top 13 protected. The top of the draft is strong but the depth is considered weak. Clear top 4, then a clear drop. Then another maybe 6-8 with another clear drop. This draft becomes a total crapshoot after that. IMO we should send this pick to Pitt if it’s not top 11.

If we move all 3, we likely take a piece or two back but they will either be short term reclamation projects to flip or dead cap for a year on top of prospects.

Imo we have to decide who is the top 6 for the next half dozen years and focus on providing them with opportunities to grow.
We have JT, Lafreniere, Mika(probably with his nmc), as players locked in with contracts up front. So with that you focus on surrounding those guys with Othmann, Cuylle, Perrault, Berard, Edstrom, Sykora etc etc.

Next year should be....

Panarin Miller Lafreniere
Perrault Zibanejad Othmann
Cuylle Trochek Berard
Edstrom Carrick Rempe/Sykora/whoever

I personally think we're keeping the pick this year anyway...I believe this organization will believe they'll be much higher in the standings next year.

No one would have a problem with Mika if he was 25 and being paid 5mil a year. The immovable contract and NMC are really the issue with Zibanejad.
Kind of true, but...
Zegras only has next year at that 5.75 million, what's he going to want after that? And then when he's UFA I think two seasons later?
Mika's worst years scoring, even this year are not much below Zegras' best (65 points two years ago). Zegras is on a 52 point pace this year. Mika already has 51 and he's been absolutely abysmal at times this year.
Mika can actually play defense and kill penalties.

If he came really cheap I'd be happy to roll the dice, other than that, no thanks.

Sure, there's a scenario where we trade all 3 and tank next season, but what have you seen from Drury that suggests we will do that?

The thing about that though is if next year this team is playoff bound or on the cusp of being a playoff team it's pretty likely we'll trade that 2025 1st rounder for some veteran help before the deadline and it might be for a rental.

You know where it would be a good idea to try a youngish, change of scenery type player? On defense.

They're more likely to fly under the radar because they're not measured as harshly on goals and points.
How about Samuelsson from Buffalo? Everyone wants to target Power or Byram, but Samuelsson could be the best option of the three based on ability, cost to acquire, age and cap hit. Yes, he has had some injuries, but at age 25, he could be just coming into his prime as a defender.

He's f***ing awful. Easily the worst of the 3 and I have zero love for Byram either.

3 straight seasons with 20+ games missed too. Hardest of passes

What don’t you agree with? Do you think this team is going into rebuild mode to tank the next few seasons?

At #4 overall we can get Frondell, Martone or Hagens.
I don't agree that he's keeping this year's pick.....no I have no facts or anything to base it on.....as I stated to another poster, it's just a gut feeling that I have.

Like not keeping it because he’s going to trade it for a player? Because that I can see.

He isn’t kicking a top 5 pick over to Pittsburgh because the team might be bad next year though.

I keep saying this, they are always keeping the pick because if you're not hockey trading Lafreniere that's the ammo to get a D with term.

Giving Pittsburgh the pick because maybe they'll be bad next year is messageboard brain.

I have no problem trading it for a Tkachuk or Power.... but he made it seem like we're just handing it over to Pittsburgh
