Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

I'm fully expecting that Gabe's offensive ability and creation of offense is going to be embarrassing for laffy. People were concerned about Gabe's skating and I actually think laffy will struggle to keep up with Gabe's pace of play. This should be interesting if those two are flanking Miller.
I mean, maybe in the future, I wouldn't bet on that in his first game though

Well boy f***in howdy, if 9 for Chychrun is the new reality, then it sure would be smart if somebody took a much better player -say, I don't know, an average Norris finish of about 4, just spitballing here- and locked that player up at 9.5.

Let me paint a picture for you: the guy I'm thinking of, hypothetically, is scoring more points in his worst year than Chychrun is in his best year, and you got them for effectively the same price.

Don't you think that would be just great? Somebody should do that.
Take it easy. If those kids could read they would be really upset.

Sounds like someone who's a good person to trade. Just think of what you could get in return

Also means that some 2nd line caliber players that are around the 6.5-8.5M range might be valuable in the trade market, regardless of their trade/move clauses.

I'm not sure what's best for Gabe it's joining this team now but this is what happens when agents get their hands into these decisions. Everyone is excited but for me I'm watching him skate with the team and he looks really slight to be an nhl player right now. Othmann has more size and strength but he is still working his way through the physicality of the league, I just think it's a big jump for a guy of Perrault's build. Hopefully I'm wrong, we could use a spark.

If we miss the playoffs and somehow win the lottery to secure #3 overall pick I assume we keep this years pick and then hand over an unprotected 1st next year. Yech!

Best case we reload in the offseason after moving on from Kreider but how many impact players are even available to sign that would move the needle.

Marner is redundant with Panarin and Perrault. We need Laf to step up and at least one more elite top 6 forward and bottom 6 depth.

Edstrom, Cuylle, Berard are all good fits for the bottom 6 and maybe you get away with Carrick as your 4C but we need more of a balanced lineup especially as our top players age. Maybe Othhmann develops into a 3rd line scoring wing too?

Just having a tough time seeing how the Rangers navigate the draft and offseason to become a contender again next year.

Best case we miss the playoffs this year, win the lottery, trade Kreider and some combination of Soucy, Miller, Schneider, Emery to open up space for a UFA forward (Bennett, Brock Nelson, Tavares, Ehlers) D (Gaveikov, Provorov, Ekblad, Schmidt) and a bottom 6 forward.

Next year we hope for leaps in development with Laf, Perrault, Othmann and that Panarin, Zib, Tro, and Miller find the fountain of youth. Moving on from Lavi is also a must.

Just unfortunate because I don’t see us having the horses to truly compete and instead should probably look to offload the vets and build around the Fox, Laf, Perrault, Shesterkin core as quickly as possible.

$95,500,000/$136,600,000 CDN
$104,000,000/ $148,000,000 CDN
$113,500,000/$162,350,000 CDN

Players will be overpaid. Some people don't like the huge cap increases. The Canadian teams take in CDN money and pay the players in USD. The ticket sales are the NHL's main source of revenue and those prices are already sky high.

A rising cap is good news for teams that have developed and are trying to keep their talent. I'm sure the Hawks would have loved to been able to keep Sharp, Byfuglien, and Versteeg. McDonagh would have never left Tampa Bay.

It's in many cases terrible news for teams trying to add 2-3 big pieces in unrestricted free agency.

It's why we didn't have to retain on Trouba. Nightmare contracts for middling players will be the norm. One of the reasonswhy I've said as frustrating as he is, NYR have to at least consider the prospect of a Panarin extension unless they find a good trade for him.

Elite offense talent shows flashes very quickly. Not refined, but you generally see it even earlier on just based on the IQ and creativity of the player. Now how the org responses to inevitable mistakes will be interesting to see if they try to neuter him early

Gabe will have more success early on than Othmann because of his hockey IQ alone. People drastically underrate how huge that is to be successful in the NHL.

I know some people like to rag on Fox, but his offensive hockey IQ is sky high, he’s never had a problem putting up buckets of points each season.

Puttin the horse before the Chicken with Perreault.

I cant stand Marner but if they went after him then you have to trade Laf for a dman or something

Othmann plays a game that requires physicality for him to be effective. Perrault does not. If Gabe has trouble adjusting it won’t be because of being “slight”… It takes a couple few seasons for young players to catch up to the strength of players in this league. This is why power forwards take longer than finesse forwards, they rely on that strength. This is why I don’t think Ryan Leonard is going to be super effective right out of the gate.

Marner doesn't make any sense unless you're booting Panarin and even then it still doesn't really make sense.

If the salaries were equal then maybe but they won't be because they're basically even right now pre UFA contract for Marner.

The Rangers really need to let a coach cook, and allow him to incorporate his vision. I agree with people who have said it doesn't feel like they're on the same page.

I understand that Quinn didn't work out and now there's that fear, but the retreads who just babysit aren't getting us anywhere either.
We did that with knoblauch

And then let him walk to Edmonton
