Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

BTW, it's been two months since Edstrom was placed on LTIR and since we haven't heard anything about him since I guess he's still on the original 2.5-3.5 months timeline (more toward longer I guess).
I seem to recall them saying he was done for the season when he went on LTIR. Of course, I could be wrong.

Yeah, 2.5 basically puts him best case scenario for playoffs. In a few days it'll be 2 months since they announced Edstrom being out. Rangers finish their season April 17th. He's done for the season.

One thing I don't like is that we always get into this binary of "well we don't wanna be Buffalo and they suck because they rebuilt, but we can't be Edmonton, they rebuilt to get all that elite talent, and we can't do that" and we end up just talking in circles.

Odds are, we're probably not gonna be Buffalo, and we're also not gonna be one of these teams like Edmonton that ran into Gretzky and Lemieux part 2 because they just happened to.

Why can't we be Dallas? They never tore it down but they keep finding elite players because they have the right infrastructure in place. They have a franchise defenseman in Heiskanen, and then they developed another f***ing one in Harley.

Meanwhile what are we doing? We got Adam Fox and went "that's it." We just resigned ourselves to the other five guys being nobodies. We drafted EJ Emery to be a safe stay at home guy. We committed to Borgen to be a safe stay at home piece. It wasn't we tried and it didn't pan out -- that you could sell me on. We resigned to it. Adam Fox is our defenseman. That's it. We're not even gonna try.

I don't care what anybody says, you absolutely cannot convince me that they're not just locking into Miller, Soucy, and Borgen as the guys they're going to war with.

The Rangers never have top players because they just accept not having top players.

Dallas has problems, I'll grant you that. They're not the best team in the West. Their top guys aren't Edmonton or Colorado's top guys. I'll believe Hintz is a Cup-winning 1C when I see it. Rantanen is a flawed star player that shook loose and I'm wary of the ones that shake loose.

But you know what, they're not torture to watch. They'll go into the playoffs with a chance and a good goaltender, and hopefully you get the RNG to go your way. That's what we've been telling ourselves we've been doing but we're not close enough to even do that.

Again, you could sell me on "look, the true upper echelon is hard to come by and not everyone gets McDavid, Mackinnon, etc. which takes some luck." That's probably the boat Dallas is in but I would trade places with them in a heartbeat. They have a decent shot at it and they're going to do what they can to augment what they have.

What are we doing? The reason I rail on the Miller trade so much is because he's a flawed, aging 'top center' that we're papering over the hole with because "ah well, we're never gonna have one." And then we'll take another Othmann at the draft who is "for sure a third liner!" and just accept that we don't have it. Meanwhile, Dallas will take some f***ing guy 25th overall or whatever the f*** and he's a PPG player before he's 21.
With the money this franchise has....is there a reason to not have the best available scouts and development coaches in the business ??? Also...we have to bite the bullet and be bad for a couple of seasons and stop trading our picks away . Can NYR fans handle that we might have a 4-5 yr run of no playoffs ? That is being generous on the 4=5 year timespan unless we hit on a real superstar ! So....nothing likely will ever change....I'm glad we had Richter-Messier-Leetch/Zubov-Graves/Tikk/Lowe as our leaders in 94 . I'll likely never see a Ranger Cup win again .

Yes. We did it for four seasons in 2018-2021.

But ownership can't.

Who cares if they can handle it? The tourists will fill that arena anyway.

When you look at a 4-5 year run with no playoffs and lack of competing because you're expecting high picks, you have to look at everybody who won't matter in 4-5 years and get rid of them. You also have to sell it to the players that could be here after 4-5 years and viewed as core pieces. This also includes a goalie they just signed for 11.5M. So, it's not happening.

The reasons were not in the playoff position is simply players not playing 100%.

We should be much higher in the standings.

We’ve scored ZERO 6 on 5 goals.
Soft as Charmin Ultra ....It's right in front of us every game . Other clubs must love playing against us . Soft in all situations . Fox soft , Miller soft , Laf soft , Zibs soft , Panarin soft ,Kreider soft .....not one would have a teammates back these days . That type of stuff all adds up in team bonding and the way it is right now....these guys do not like being involved in anything physical. They virtually run to the bench after a whistle in the crease...at both ends .

says a lot that he thinks he's good enough for the NHL after just one year in college. not willing to work for it. future headcase?
Hmmm so the implication is that he's a lazy bum and a headcase because he essentially agreeing to live ECHL style life for the next few years rather than staying with a comfortable life at UConn? I'm sure you're being sarcastic.

The Dolt is never going to agree to anything that means playoff revenue does not come in for 4 years...hell, he'll probably have a stroke if the Rangers miss the playoffs this season.

The collective fanbase has had a stroke all season over this team, should ownership be pleased with missing after winning the President's Trophy last year?
