Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

This coaching staff has a stink on them. I like Peca but will he change anything? I still think theres a 40% chance Laviolette stays and they make him hire a new D coach. The only guy saying hes getting fired is Seravalli. Everyone else has said his job is secure.

If Laviolette is still coaching this team in September i'm f***ing quitting the Rongos for good i swear to christ

Drury has been a disaster. But if Dolan were to replace him, who’s the next disaster he’d hire? It was Dolan who cleared out the Rangers’ front office to hand Drury the job in the first place, and given how stubborn he is, firing Drury now would mean admitting he was wrong four years ago. That’s not happening—Drury is staying, for better or worse.

Then again, as the saying goes, the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. But at this point, could someone else really do a worse job?
This is the only thing that scares me about replacing Drury, we’d be leaving the search to Dolan and the corpse of Sather. Shame we don’t have a qualified PoHo in place that could be leaned on…

Chris Kelleher or Ryan Hardy. If Utah wants to make changes so Ryan Smith can hire his own team, then Bill Armstrong should be hired immediately.

Watching the leafs game and their defensive system is what I want this team to do, they expend very little energy, protect the center of the ice and break out as a unit...all things we don't do.
The Rangers would be so much better if they played a zone defense and break out of their own zone as a unit. Watch the way the Rangers break out; their forwards all go towards the opposing team’s blue line looking for a stretch pass that their d-men are not capable of. The defensemen are the only ones on the screen when you watch it on TV.

It's too bad the NHL's point system doesn't make sense. We would be comfortably in a playoff spot if they used the 3-2-1 system.

OTT - 114
NYR - 109
MTL - 102
DET - 100
CBJ - 98
Or better yet, get rid of the point that the losing team gets by making it to OT. A win is 2 points, a loss is 0 points regardless if it’s OT or regulation. It’s dumb that a shootout decides a game. OT has also become more of a snooze fest with teams bringing the puck back to the neutral zone.

The last PoHo we had died on the hill that he wanted to keep Gorton, so that didn't really work out either.

1 thing working in Peca's direction is after many many years of people saying we need a faceoff coach our faceoffs improved under Peca.

My fear with college coaches, and it came true with David Quinn, is that there's already a built-in culture that you ride your seniors until they fall over and the freshmen are happy to be there. We're trying to get away from that.

That's exactly what Quinn did. Some of these college coaches are great recruiters but severly lacking in tactical ability. Carle is the exception, but would be a real shock if he got what he allegedly wants from the NYR, and even if it was offered, that he would believe the org would follow through on it for more than 1.5-3 years.

The Rangers really need to let a coach cook, and allow him to incorporate his vision. I agree with people who have said it doesn't feel like they're on the same page.

I understand that Quinn didn't work out and now there's that fear, but the retreads who just babysit aren't getting us anywhere either.

Not that he's an NHL coaching candidate, but BC's current coach Greg Brown would be more akin to the Quinn hire imo. Gets a lot of talent to the school but then doesn't really do anything to elevate it, and the team doesn't seem like anything more than the sum of its parts. Carle on the other hand, like you said, is a really, really impressive coach.

He played at his own discretion and, likely, not in the his own best interests or the interests of the club. I realize it doesn't suit your narrative but it most certainly IS what happened.

I've never said his injury didn't contribute to his down season, it most obviously has. That doesn't change the fact that your conjecture that he was "forced to play" and is is "heroic" is completely baseless speculation for the former and hyperbole for the latter.

The whole team has underperformed the whole year. Kreider is among the most disappointing in that group.
1. Playing under adverse conditions, such as being injured, is arguably heroic, almost by definition.
It is even the more so if he was forced to that, which we don't know for certain, but seems plausible b'c if he could have sit, he reasonably would have sat.

2. "He played at his own discretion"/"Forced to play" again, we don't know for certain, but w/Rs braintrust trying desperately to make POs, it is reasonable to conject pressure was applied and he intermittently yielded to same.

I feel like David Carle is going to Chicago. The thing to remember is there arent a ton of college coaches who have made the jump to the NHL and found success recently. David Quinn, Dave Hakstol, off the top of my head. Montgomery is a solid coach but had other issues that have caused him to bounce around. Pecknold from QU was another guy who was talked about fro years but never hired anywhere.

We would also be comfortably in a playoff spot if they got more than 2 shots on net, scored more than 1 goal, didn't give up eye-rolling goals, lose coverage, make terrible passing decisions, play with zero effort, and if Zibanejad knew the start date of the season. This team/coaching staff is to blame. Current point system might be stupid, but this is on them.

People always post this shit. Every game wouldn't have gone the same way if the system was different

But yeah we'd be there too if we didn't blow so many games in the 3rd then lose in OT

Of course the same could be said about the teams around us. We all suck

I heard Sather on 32T's a few months ago when EF and Kyle took on the show on the road. Sather sounded old. Slats is 81. He is not the same guy who gave up the GM duties ten years ago.

I'm sure Dolan has hockey people he consults with, but we don’t know who they are. Back in 2000, Gary Bettman recommended Sather to Dolan, but these days, Gary and Jim hardly speak. OTOH, the NHL did rent the Sphere for the NHL draft.

Carle would nice but ultimately...whatever.

I'm not under any impression that a coach is magically solving anything. They need a coherent vision and the coach on board with it, and willing to do whatever it takes to implement it.

It's amazing none of these teams seems to want the second wild card spot.
