Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The 09-10 Rangers might be one of the worst collections of talent ever assembled.

It was Gaborik, Vinny Prospal and a heaping pile of trash.

The fact that they even sniffed the playoff race should be a walking Tortorella advertisement
I think Hank should have by all rights won the Vezina that year as well.

Yes just what we need someone who has gotten fired multiple times including here. This guy has been living off his cup with Tampa 1000 years ago with a stacked team. Stop doing the same thing over n over

We havent had a coach who preaches accountability since Torts. Hiring him again would go against everything we've recently done. not sure how it would be "doing the same thing". Also his first stint was 12 games as the interim coach at the end of 2001. Hardly relevant.

End of season..

Keep
Miller
Schneider
Fox
Lafreniere
Othmann
Berard
Carrick
Panarin
JT
Borgen
Igot

Move
Kreider
The other dmen
Mika if you can
Trochek in the right deal

The rest whatever.

Times are tough but I’m going to reiterate that teams and players ebb and flow from year to year. Development isn’t linear. Writing guys off based on this season is reactionary and emotional and probably not a good way to run a team.

Guys like Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin and Trocheck have each disappointed at times (or all) this season. Do we think all of them declined simultaneously? Is this a physical issue, a skill issue, a mental issue? There’s a natural transition for these guys to take on lesser roles as their careers continue. Maybe move one of them, and bring in a different look, but to think that they’re all going to have a bad year next year bc they had a bad year last year is just as unlikely as thinking they would all repeat what they did last season.

You have the formation of a pretty solid group.

Cuylle - Miller - Laf should be the first line.

Then you have Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Trocheck taking 4 of the middle 6 spots. If you move one of them, you have 3 openings for young players, trades, or UFA. Edstrom Carrick Rempe is a great 4th line.

On D, you can probably add two LD. RD is pretty set. I don’t see any move needed there. Schneider is still developing and learning and improving. He has a good work ethic. Why are we trading him?

You have K’Andre. You need to figure out what type of D you need to add to him. Trading K’Andre is going to be another short sighted mistake. He’s still developing as well.

I don’t really see this as big of a challenge as most.

The biggest area of concern for me is the coach who needs to be fired and replaced with a younger mind who’s going to get these guys playing like they want to win. Who’s the next Spencer carberry or Kris Knoblauch? Go find him.
the problem with this is the same as the lindgren issue.. if kreider is on this team, he's going to be relied upon to play a bigger role than he can handle. He's gonna be on pp1. he's gonna be on the ice 6-5. He's gonna get double shifted late down 1. whether it's because of his rep and seniority, his cap hit, or because he's just a guy that coaches respect, if he's here he's gonna get deployed to the detriment of the team.

Panarin presents a different issue. The adopted narrative here is that his very presence on the team permits an ineffective style of play from other top9 pieces, specifically Lafreniere. That to me is not gospel, nor is it in theory an issue that couldn't be fixed with better leadership and coaching. It might be both. The damage might be done already. I don't know.

But other parts of your post make sense. the idea that Edstrom Carrick Rempe is the foundation of a 4th line is correct.

I think you need to give Zib another shot at C, behind Miller, after a summer of dedicated work. He can't be this done this quickly. Also, needing to find a top 6 C is a lot bigger of an ask than needing a top 9 W.

Panarin Miller Cuylle
Lafreniere Zibanejad Perreault
Othmann Trocheck Berard
Edstrom Carrick Rempe

But i bet he can drive some of the dead weight out of town faster.

This core would get Jon Cooper fired in half a season.

The current NY Ranger core eats " player friendly" coaches like Laf eats poutine infused salads.
People have interesting thories in their mind. Torts isnt scaring anyone older than 19. He became a lazy fraud imo.

It's not about scaring players... it's about accountability.

I want a coach that holds players accountable for their shit effort.
A coach can't preach accountability while taking none. Players over 20 tune him out fast. He has been a fraud for years imo.

How is he not accountable?

He has always been humble about his flaws and what mistakes were his coaching mistakes. I'm not sure why you think he isn't accountable.

He always talks to the media. He just doesn't put up with BS.

Id say its pretty accountable that he basically fired himself after admitting publicly he wasnt up to the task. paul maurice did this with Winnipeg a few years back too. that went well for him.
