I am optimistic as anyone on this board but this is the worst stretch of Rangers hockey I've seen in a long time. It's made far worse by the expectations going into this season, as well as the leaks to the media. But it's still very poor, uninspired, lifeless "zombie" hockey with only the younger players trying. My guess is Trouba went into camp with an entirely negative attitude, which spiraled things out of control. Once we hit some adversity instead of rallying they threw in the towel. The vets on this team (Trouba, and now namely Kreider and Mika) weren't/aren't helping matters and the kids are left floundering with no structure. Everyone has regressed, which in my view is caused by a coach who has lost the room, a pervasive negative attitude to the lack of organizational control of the situation, consistent failures by veterans who noticeably take up too much ice time, and a power vacuum of leadership. Perhaps this was inevitable.
At this point, in addition to doing whatever you can to get out of Mika's contract, you fire Lavi and see if the team rallies around a young coach Peca. If they don't, gut the foundation and acquire assets. I wouldn't be surprise if a coaching change is enough to spark this team, though. Sometimes that is enough of a difference to have players man up.

I’d normally agree but this same group has needed a coaching change to wake them up twice in the last 4 years already, and having their captain very publicly traded for a pot of beans didn’t do anything to wake them up either. Even if a coaching change did get them playing well again, it would just be another bandaid at this point. Why does this group need a wake up call every 2 years in order to show up? Have to address the underlying issues eventually…

NHL coaches usually don't last that long. It is 100% a bandaid but that's kind of the point. We apply the bandaid now and in the mean time improve the foundation. Whatever we have right now is not working, clearly, and rallying around a young coach is in my opinion the best way to salvage the season.
Kakko is going to get traded and will probably continue to be what he’s been.
The expectations of being a 2OA won’t follow him at his next stop and he’ll be appreciated for what he does well.

I think the problem is that we’ve put 3 bandaids on a cancer patient already, and talking about salvaging the season at this point feels like slapping a 4th bandaid on the cancer patient, smacking him on the butt and telling him to get out their and run another marathon when he’s basically in sceptic shock at this point from not receiving any proper treatment and just getting bandaid after bandaid.

But lav needs to go for other reasons. He just isnt a good coach anymore.
For sure. I think everything has to go. But I think you have to get rid of a couple more tumors before you bring in the next coach. I don’t want the same “leadership” group having any influence on the next coaches time here. My post was more about the thought of “jump starting” the guys to “save” the season. I don’t want to do that. I need to see meaningful change at this point. It’s too far gone to settle for a coaching change and temporary signs of life from the slugs.

First, giving up on this season is not a good mentality. There are numerous examples of teams that excelled after an early slump. Hell, the Mets were arguably the best team in the league after they were blessed by Grimace.
Second, how was last year anything like a "cancer patient"? We were two wins away from going to the cup finals and played superbly. We got bested by a strong Florida team. It happens and the playoffs are a coin flip.
Everyone is playing like ass right now. You apply a coaching change and see who steps up. It's not like it costs us anything and you can trial out a new interim coach.

What young talent have they sold low on? Kravtsov never had value because if he did Dreary wouldve traded him way before he got stuck with a 7th rounder. Sold high on Nils though. Also got Cuylle for Lias who also never amounted to anything.

This could also be the incentive for guys like Ck and Mika to waive their clauses.

Good to hear Dolan is in lockstep with management. These players dont deserve to see changes made to placate them. Drury dragging his feet is more of an issue to me than any perceived slights toward this weak locker room.
I’m going to assume Panarin is done after his current contract if not sooner.
The next time they sign a UFA to that fat a contract, they better make sure that the money is going to a guy who is going to be capable of pushing the team through the playoffs.
The Igor contract is ass, but at least we know he can do that.

I dont really get why people want Drury fired when we have a bunch of guys with trade protection, and Drury has shown he will go nose to nose with players and be hard with them when trying to make moves. Mika doesnt want the smoke. I can tell you right now, he personally will be thrilled if Drury gets canned.
Trade Panarin in the summer with a year left. Backfill his top 6 spot with Gabe. Sign Mikko Rantanen.

The orthodoxy of "let's keep this asshole on the ice because we wouldn't want to sell low on him" makes my head spin.
Drury isnt dragging his feet. He is very methodical.
But his end result usually isnt good when it comes to selling assets.

I respected Kakko's words yesterday but how could anyone actually watch him play yesterday against 4 AHL defenseman and think "this guy has 30/30 potential!"

If Kakko plateaus as a 2nd or 3rd line 2-way forward who scores 40 points, mainly at 5v5, he's going to have a LONG career. I hope that if he is dealt the team recoups something solid back and he isn't the last one out the door.
