Rangers have too many RD, so they move a LD over.

They are going to do everything and anything they can before they try to play Shattenkirk, ADA and Pionk all at RD I suppose.

Staal isn't underperforming, everyone knew he'd be bad. I don't like it but I can see the logic. Bench a guy you know you can get more out of.

Though I'd prefer Staal to permenantly ride the press box.

I have seen you post about roles in the past, do you think either of them are going to replace the role of McQuaid and it is some sort of competition for his role?

When I talk about roles, I don't talk about it as "we need X number of players who fill this role and Y number of players who fill that role." It's more about having players playing in the roles that suit them, because players who fill any role can contribute positively to the team.

If McQuaid's ability is to provide defensive play through his more stationary means, experience, and grit, that's the role he needs to fill when he's in the lineup.
If Pionk's ability is to provide defensive play through his more mobile means, puck movement and offensive play, that's the role he needs to fill when he's in the lineup.
If DeAngelo's ability is to provide puck movement, offensive play and grit, that's the role he needs to fill when he's in the lineup.

To be ahead of McQuaid on the depth chart, those guys need to perform in their roles better than McQuaid performs in his role. McQuaid's performance level in his role isn't very high, so they don't have a tall bar to clear in my mind. After three games, Pionk isn't doing that so well. DeAngelo, in his one game, did.

LOL @ the all-lefty PP2 unit. Especially if we're adamantly playing Lettieri, who literally can do only one thing well at the NHL level; fire one-timers from the left circle on the PP.

I'll have to update my position that the rebuild ends in two years. My previous take being: we have the Russian invasion next season and after one year of gelling we attack. It'll take longer I fear.

The rebuild will end when we are ridden of the three contracts, that is MS, BS and the King. When these are off the books, we are safe from immovable contracts and left with a minimal Dan Girardy buy-out.

Starting with the 2021-22 season we should have Breadman, loads of new talented prospects, Lias, Chytil, Howden and Co. are vets by that time.
I still don't mind the rebuild, if it's done right. Panarin is the best UFA option there is for us. Elite! talent, a ppg-player, still young, wants to come here. Sign him. 8.5m/y, easy money. It's a safe bet with Breadman, not like all our other FA signings ... just make sure we have the cap.

You don't think McQuaid can play that role on LD?

Just my impression and please correct me if I am mistaken, but from your other posts it kind of seem like you believe Staal should be playing and maybe are trying to discount anything that may endanger that?

I don’t have much of an opinion on whether or not Staal “should” be playing. I think I understand why he’s in the lineup, and have no problem expanding on that. I also don’t know that we have any options for LD that are any better (Claesson, maybe... we will see).

But no, I don’t think McQuaid can fill his role at LD. I also think part of the reason he’s there in the first place is to provide competition for Pionk and DeAngelo.

I think that is all fair enough, I guess we just see it differently.

I too think I understand why they are playing Staal but I think it's probably time for them to reevaluate whatever his value is versus whatever the team could maybe value more so by moving on from him.

Similarly I think it's time to value what the two RD prospects could maybe do long term over whatever value McQuaid adds at RD over what he would add at LD, assuming there is some sort of drop off or difference in his effectiveness by moving over.

Look at the bright side guys!

Suck this year.
Get rid of Hayes, Zucc, Names, McQuaid and Vesey at the deadline for picks.
Pick Hughes cause we win the lottery naturally.
Pick BPA with all of our picks.
Obtain Stone or Panarin, hopefully Panarin in the off season.
Bring over the Russians and start 2019 Reg season like this.

Panarin/Stone - Zib - Buch
Kreider - Chytil - Howden
Anderson - Hughes - Kravtsov
Spooner - Boo - Fast

Skjei - ADA
Smith - Shatty
Hajek - Pionk
Staal

Hank
Shesty

Already thinking ahead! I'll wake up eventually.

In this scenario I'd look to deal a center for some defensive help.

I would love Panarin at 8.5.

I would also love a new Ferrari and a supermodel.

My 'dream' scenario, would be rangers win lottery, vancouver get #2, and roast them over a fire dealing them #1, and then we take kappo.

Is it possible benching Shatty here has something to do with the light schedule? He misses one game and doesn't have a game for almost a week
And maybe they feel his knee isn't all the way back yet so that is a part of the equation.

We've played 3 games.

This process will no doubt be ongoing and I have a feeling we'll see benchings, healthy scratches and demotions to the AHL a throughout the season.

I’m sure we will.

When will Staal be the subject of said benchings? We have better players to take those minutes.

Maybe once all the other D-men have been whipped into shape and put on notice and play better.

Force Staal out by everyone else playing better (in Quinn's eyes, not ours of course)

So we're likely getting scratches to Shattenkirk and Pionk if neither of them are practicing on the PP? Bad. Good.

Think Claesson will impress a lot of people.
I found him intriguing during the pre-season, but I don’t remember many positive comments on him.

I'm not a patient man by nature... in my line of work it's detrimental in most facets.

But with a rebuilding team, a new coach (not just to this team but in the NHL) with a lot of young guys (and some boat anchors) I'm going to do my best.

It's not going to be easy to remember, but this is a process that won't be over anytime soon... but I'm trying to believe that AT LEAST we are on the right path now.
