Carolina has $27 mil to work with this summer but this is a team that may have a short window to win in. This summer they have RFA's Necas, Jarvis and Drury and UFA's Guentzel, Teravainen, Noesen, Martinook and half their defense Skjei, Pesce, Chatfield and DeAngelo. The summer before 25-26 UFA's Kuznetsov, Fast, Lemieux and the other half of their defense Burns, Slavin and Orlov + Andersen. Re-signing just Necas and Jarvis this summer should at least eat half of that $27 million. They're looking then at re-signing their entire defense corps over this summer and next + Teravainen + Guentzel +++++ and it doesn't stop for 25-26. They're going to bleed some really good players over the next two summers.

I bet Guentzel tries to find his way back to Pittsburgh. I doubt Carolina gives him the contract he wants.

It could happen and I still think that Crosby is going to be a great player for a couple more seasons but guys like Malkin and Letang are showing their age more and more and Karlsson underwhelmed their expectations. The goaltending is unsettled and the state of their development system not very good. They've missed the playoffs the last two years and I think they're less than 50/50 even with Guentzel next year. He'll have term with his next deal and they won't be moving him even as the team ages out more. Objectively Pittsburgh is not likely to be a good team next year or for the next several years. Guentzel can make a lot of money wherever he goes but if he goes back to Pittsburgh he might be kissing goodbye to any chance of being in the playoffs again before he retires. The Penguins aren't all that far away from being a bottom feeder in the next couple years.

If they were smart they would have started the rebuild already, considering its likely they wont trade Sidney and have him retire there. So he shouldnt be considered an asset.

Hes the type of competitor/athlete that will likely stay on a year or two past when he should hang them up. He'll still be effective though, just not dominant. He'll hang around to be a leader for the new crop of talent. And that could be anywhere from 4-6 seasons imho. I could see him playing until 40 and possibly even 41 or 42. He'll be 37 to start next season.

Next year will be Crosby's contract year too. If he maintains his game at the deadline he gets the Pens at least 4 really good assets. A playoff bound team adding him to their roster almost automatically is going to be a really serious contender. He'd easily be our second most dangerous forward right now and best all around forward. He's really good at everything.....not just offense and he's as good a leader as there is around the league. He hasn't lost very much. His team has declined a lot more than he has. The Pens need to rebuild and if Sidney wants to continue his career past next year it would be smarter for him to do what Patrick Kane did. Find another team that at least has some kind of chance.

I was looking at the Pens board this morning and they don't quite see yet. They're let's move Marcus Pettersson and Reilly Smith and this guy and that guy......but not Crosby. But Crosby isn't capable of lifting that entire franchise over the finish line. Their team is too far gone and having him hang around several more years while they're rebuilding will be just wasting him as an asset. They need a start over and hanging on to the past isn't the way to do that.

If they move him it’ll be out west.

All things being equal yes.....but you've got to get the most you can for him and trading Crosby would really signal the Pens are all in on a rebuild meaning it doesn't matter what team he goes to they're not going to be contending for a while.

Also the team trading for him no doubt is going to want to work into the deal a new contract. So his approval of his destination will be part of any trade.

sure but crosby has to approve the deal.
I cant see him moving except for a team like colorado or edmonton. He plays with who he wants to play with, and believes will win another few cups.

A more accurate representation I believe:

^ that’s precisely why they went all in, for once, on Guentzel.

adding crosby as 2C on edmonton would be filthy lmao

Agreed. I doubt he goes back or stays on the Hurricanes. He’ll one of the hottest free agents this summer and a team will need a lot of cap space to get him.

If they’re smart they’ll trade him (if he’d waive). But they wouldn’t really get much back. Look at the Blackhawks with Kane. Small return for these types of trades.

Agreed. I doubt he goes back or stays on the Hurricanes. He’ll one of the hottest free agents this summer and a team will need a lot of cap space to get him.

When the Rangers picked up Kane he was a player pretty much on one leg. A healthy Crosby>>>a not so healthy Kane. But you might be right that Pens fans on the whole may end up disappointed by the return.

kane was a shell of himself. Crosby damn near willed that penguins team to the playoffs.
Crosby is still a top 6 center and would be a nightmare as a 2c.

I think DFO is being overly optimistic on these players salaries.
True, the cap went up but with carryover bonuses many teams will still be close to max especially after taking care of their RFA’s.

pass on sprong
develop internally + reduce $$ available for cap elsewhere
do not take mins away from Oth, Ber, Eds, and if he comes back cheap, Rosivic
Agree here bern.
We’re going to be having a lot of guys in house (for once) over the next 2-3 years that are going to need ice time and a chance at roster spots on the big club.

Next year hopefully Berard and Edstrom are full time NHLers

Maybe mid season or the following year, Othmann, Chmelar, Perrault

Year following that
Sykora, our 1st this year, etc

Plus wildcard guys like Laba/BMB/vasi etc
Who aren’t really on a set timeline like the others.

Young players laf, Cuylle, maybe still Kakko will still occupy spots on the team, and when Panarin/Trouba are gone, I’d wager they add a high priced UFA or trade target.

Our forwards on the team and in the pipe actually look good over the next 2-5 seasons.

Whether they resign bread at a cheaper deal, or look to go a different direction thru UFA, there will likely be outside talent coming in somewhere along the line
