If a player can develop an equipment allergy overnight during an offseason, certainly a player can have lingering issues from a concussion that affects their play even years later.
meh, for every instance like that are dozens of other players like loui erikson that had to run out the contract after he changed his playing style and effectiveness.

I can't be the only one after these playoffs curious what a Panarin-Chytil combo might look like.

So the off-season finally here, well not really till July, but anyway.

Bridge Kakko @ 2-2.5 million
Re-sign Motte @ under 2 million
Re-sign Copp @ 5-5.5 million
Trade for a 4C or sign one cheaply in FA
Shoot Nemeth to the Moon

something that panarin will never be, and especially with a 11.6m aav.

this is a hard situation. odds are he will be here next year, we will know within the first ten games if he is suddenly willing to attack the house again or if we will see the same panarin.

Personally, I don't care how he plays in the regular season if he is putting up 90+ points for a playoff team (which we will be). But in the playoffs its a different beast clearly, he needs to be better and as I've said I think he will. But if it's a repeat of this past year, I will start to become concerned.

the fact they made it to within 2 wins of the finals and there was no adjustment is enough for it to already be concerning to me. if panarin played the like panarin of 20-21 then we beat tampa...

motte is not resigning for under 2m. he is going to get overpaid somewhere. he turned down close to 2m per with term from van prior to the trade.

Did everyone just watch the Avalanche? Their team speed made the difference.

Why would we want to bring back Copp who is a slow skater, sign him to a big contract when we are up against the cap, already a slow team and we need to worry about contracts of Miller and Laf?

What is the plan for 2C? I don't feel too good about bringing Strome back. Rangers are not going to afford to pay a 2C over 6 million. So there are going to be limits. The hope is one day Chytil can take on the 2C role? But I dunno, he had a good playoffs but his regular season numbers were meh.

I would like to use our assets to make a trade for a cost controlled 2/3 center and hope Chytil takes the next step. We put ourselves in this position with the big contracts. I don’t think we can afford a legit 2C salary.

Its unpopular but I'll continue to stump for JT Miller. Take a real run at the Cup next year and maintain flexibility to see what Chytil/KAM/Laf contracts are going to look like next summer. K'Andre/Laf/Schneider/Chytil should be off limits but count me as a guy who is ready to deal some youth for a big swing. These are prime years for Mika/Kreider and Igor is not going to be this cheap forever.

Unless this is confirmed somewhere, it is speculation. He played 95 out of a possible 102 games this year, including all 20 in the playoffs. Cant use injury as an excuse if you aren't missing games imo. Everyone is playing hurt.

Panarin was not at his best in the playoffs, he himself said that, and I personally was disappointed in the continued overpassing that stems from him and his linemates, but I think the guy deserves a little more credit around these parts. He's done nothing but live up to his contract the first 3 years and its unfair to write him off after a rough playoff. He will have a chance to redeem himself next year. I remember a time when Kucherov had similar knocks against him,
Everyone wants Panarin to find his real form again, that's the point of the discussion. If he doesn't the Rangers essentially have a Bobrovsky situation of their own. Personally I think he will improve but I believe his best days (CBJ/early Ranger) are behind him. So the question now is, how much does the Rangers build around him to help him improve KNOWING it will have consequences for the younger players and cap situation in the near future.

To break it down:

Kreider Zib Kravtsov
Laf Chytil Kakko

are two perfectly good lines. If Kravtsov finds that elusive chemistry with Mika the Rangers are golden for the first line. The Kids were perfectly fine in tough playoff games against veteran champion teams. Let them grow together and feast on weaker teams and in 1-2 years they will be a force, all of them are on the upswing. With proper coaching (*cough* Colorado) they will flourish. Colorado went from dead last 5 years ago to Cup winners this year. That is growth and good coaching. However, Chytil and the kids are not a natural "shutdown" line that the coaches want for their 3rd line.

So that leaves Panarin, 11.6m dollar man. What to do? Too many internal contradictions between out of date coaching, wonky contracts/cap and kids on the upswing needing proper guidance+minutes (rather than being square pegged - again).

I don’t see how Scheifele works cap wise. They can barely afford to pay Copp and he’s going to make less than Schiefele

Unless you’re overpaying to retain which no thanks

Would be a total Ranger move to go give up big assets for a more expensive slightly better Ryan Strome
Slightly better Ryan Strome? It’s amazing how a narrative catches on like wildfire. Please, let’s not compare Ryan Strome to an 80+ point C.

The Rangers learned that physicality is important against Tampa. It would be really stupid if the Rangers don't understand that overall game speed (not just skating) also is a vital lement after watching Colorado destroy slow, big and heavy Tampa using puck movement and skating.

I’m in. The Miller hate is manufactured by those that don’t even watch him anymore and still believe these last two years are an anomaly. Miller is an elite, two-way C. “He won’t do this anywhere on a contending team.” Oh yea? I’d sign up to have him and Mika down the middle. Trouba will be a cap casualty in a couple years when Schneider is ready to eat top-4 mins, and by then you have defensive prospects coming that will be ready. They need to nail down a 2C. It’s imperative if you want to contend for a Cup.

Miller is exactly the type of player Drury & Gallant want (and need) for this team. PPG player. Plays on the PP & PK. C & W versatility. Wins faceoffs. Plays with a much needed edge in the top 6. Has a history with the Rangers and a former teammate of our 2 longest tenured players. Making a trade for a 1 year rental is risky obviously but now is the time to take a risk. JT in a contract year going for a Cup in NY is a pretty good recipe for him to have another excellent season.

We have redundancy at wing & on defense. We need to move out some of these ELC guys at some point. Maybe you can also entice Vancouver to take back Nemeth in return for Ferland's LTIRd contract. Lots of Swedes on the Canucks. Additionally, us trading for Miller means one of our rivals in the East arent getting him. Theres a reason why us, the Maple Leafs & Avalanche all had heavy interest in him.

JT Miller is 29 and no doubt looking for a serious long term contract, on top of being in high demand from retooling teams. JT Miller would cost Kakko/Schneider+Chytil+ at this point, for one year. After that the Rangers can't afford him/remaining kids unless they also trade Kreider or Trouba. Having said that, I have no doubt JT Miller really tickles the Rangers fancy, it's so on brand.

Every summer I'm reminded how much I hate the salary cap in this league.

Fans of normal sports: "Which one of these free agents should we sign for our team to take the next step?"

This thread: "As you can see here on CapFriendly, I've devised a plan for the team to save $300,000 while only taking massive downgrades at four positions!"
Lol real. I will admit I do like the adventure of trying to find ways to fit a roster under the cap, it's like a fun game to play. But the cap being so damn restrictive is ridiculous.

I wouldnt trade Schneider at this point for any realistically available player, but Kakko or Chytil (id hold FC because we have literally nothing at C behind him) could be available in the right trade. I know people have an emotional connection to Kakko but if the Rangers arent bringing back Strome/Copp, and the team plans on being a Cup Contender next year (rightfully so) he's a trade chip. Lundkvist too, he will never have a spot on the right side here. Kravtsov & Othmann could also be available. Teams may also value Cuylle or Berard fairly highly based on their development.

I'm certainly not saying to trade all these guys, but they dont all have a future here, and something has to give eventually.

Asking a 30 something to play like they did when they were 20 something just aint happening
Panarin is who he is now
This is why i didnt like the signing
He's on the decline right as we r ready to compete for the cup
I know when i played sports in my 20s i was aggressive and my body is now paying the price for it as im 52 now.
As i hit 30 i mellowed out and realized i can still be affective without abusing my small frame. Only 5'9 153 back then.
I dont believe Panarin will ever be the aggressive puck hound we saw his first year or 2 with us
So its up to him to adjust his game to still be affective.
I'd really like to see him on RW with kreid and zib. That may force his adjustment
